I was also told mid May for my BTO 15" 1.5GHz by CDW, idiots just shipped me a chip by itself! Any chance they are wrong - Anyone?

Quite possible they are wrong, we order alot of stuff for my work through cdw and sometimes the shipping dates are very very starange, however we have never ordered any Apple Stuff.

Depending on how much Thinking and Planning you do - OmniGraffle is amazing. Also, invest the time and money in building a proper contacts database using Filmaker. You'll never do it once you've started loading stuff into Apple Mail or Entourage because we all 'make do', but a proper DB which is easily web enabled and can manage all your correspondence, invoices, accounts etc is just invaluable. Enjoy.

Comboy,

Does Filemaker allow me to manage such things? I run a web development company, and would benefit greatly from Filemaker if it allows me to manage clients, invoices, etc. Does it come with Panther?

Any other information you could provide would be great!

Thanks,
Frank

PS: Do you know of any applications similar to Microsoft Project for the Mac?

Apparently it's leaving from TAOYUAN CITY, Taiwan. Am I mistaken, or is this not Shanghai? Hehe...

Did you order a 12" PB? I think these come from Taiwan. Maybe the 17" PBs too?

raiste,

Actually, I did... A nice 12" SD. I guess the 15's come from Shanghai then. Looking forward to its arrival!

cool you are now on Mac. yeah! don't know of a similar program myself, but i have a friend who runs ms project on a 15pb using virtual pc (if you can stomach seeing a windows desktop). he has had no problems at all with this solution.

if you need his advice, i'm sure he'd be willing to help.

is anyone using a pb12 and an ext monitor? i thought it would be a clever solution... ultimate portability and power at the desk? good idea, or should i be opting for a 15pb? mostly do word processing, office mgmnt (myob), but should be doing a lot more 3d (formz and occasional archicad)

iBook 14" G4 1.2Ghz... oh yeah...

I am using my new 1.2 Ghz G4 right now, I have had it about a week. So far, the experience has been great! I am getting 6+ hours of battery off of this thing! It is so much faster than my old 900Mhz G3 too! I couldn't be happier. You have to love this type of power. I would recommend this iBook to anyone. Nice of apple to stick the 256 megs on the motherboard instead of filling both slots! Now I don't have to throw ram away when I upgrade! YEAH!!

hi,

i just got my new 12in ibook today (with 512mb ram and AE) :D . im actually typing on it now. so far, so good - didn't take me too long to set everything up (less than half an hour). Battery has been running nearly 2 and a half hours so far, with AE turned on the whole time, and i have 56% battery left. I have it set to reduced performance when running on battery at this point just to see what its like - it is a bit slower sometimes than when i had it on highest while charging the battery but not drastically slower. something a little weird - about this mac shows my processor as 1.07GHz, not 1GHz.

edit: i remember reading that someone was after white apple stickers, and that they were told that there was no way to get hold of them seeing apple had stopped making them - well i got two white apple stickers with my new ibook.

PowerBook memory

Hello all,
i've been following these forums for quite some time and am planning on ordering a pb15" this weekend. before i do, i was wondering where is hould go to get a memory upgrade. i'm assuming Apple charges more for their memory than you can get at various places online. does anyone have a particularly cheap place with good service they would like to share?

thanks

i'm a current cube owner, but this will be my first 'new' mac

i have key on my 12" which is having paint issues (rubbing off). Apple Support says go to a reseller or applestore; i called my local applestore--they said to bring it in, they'll replace.

i seem to have all the bad luck. i have 2 dead pixels, although they aren't obnoxious. i also seem to have a little of the case "wobble," as someone put it. AND, i seem to have a slight discoloration on the RETURN key.

www.crucial.com

great online memory maker and seller. it was alot cheaper than the local store I went to buy my 512MB SO-DIMM.

i guess i was hoping for a bit more of a savings :)
Crucials price for a 1GB stick is: $435.99
1GB — CT368654 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC US $435.99 (each)

Apples price is $500. granted Apple charges $1200 for 2GB and you could probably get by under $1000 at Crucial including shipping...
but i was hoping for something a 'bit' cheaper pricewise.

i hope i'm not starting to sound like all those 'where is my G5 powerbook' ppl. ;)

You might find the 1GB module cheaper, but they are just expensive. You can usually find good deals on the 512MB chips. I expect that in time, the 1GB chips will be a whole lot cheaper...

My PB 15" mini review

Got it today - 1 day early! I am amazed by fed ex - from china to denver in 30 hrs!!!

first couple hours spent draing the battery (to calibrate) and transfer over my files. First charge lasted for over 3 hours! I was loading about 25 gb of data over ethernet, so this is not bad at all for batter power!

I have the 1.5 ghz 15" model with superdrive, 128 mb vid card, and 5400 RPM drive. 512 RAM in 2 sodimms

ran xBench - I think that people who are getting low scores are not closing all their backround windows. these are my scores...

total score: 135.02
cpu score: 170.68
thread test: 132.64
memory test: 149.59
quartz graphics test: 179.43
open gl graphics test: 117.14
user interface test: 227.21
disk test 75.46

kicked the pants off my g4 800 quicksilver in all tests but disk, which the quicksilver won due to its 7200 RPM HD.

Halo runs very well compared to my old system! I can pull uup the resolution and the graphics (not to highest all across the board though!) and its runs beautifully and smoothly.

ghost recon runs AWSOME! full graphics and full resolution with smooth frames rates! HORAY!!!

UT2004 takes some tweaking but is plenty playable, it still chokes the system a little though... I am playing the demo by the way, I don't know if the full version is more optimised.

1 dead pixel that won't rub out, oh well. kind of an annoyance, but I'll deal. I'm puzzled as how to my sound isn't working anymore though - worked fine until about 30 min ago. guess I'll truck it into the apple store 5 min from my house.

note on the wobbleness. I had read someone say that their wobble was only their when the lid is closed, but not when it is open. when the lid of the pb is closed, there is a small gap between the case and the monitor - this is how they have been forever. when you rock on this lid, the mointer has freedom of motion to hit the case, when you open it you are moving the base (which is secured by 4 kind of rubber stoppers). My case doesn't wobble, and I would venture to say none do, and that these "wobble" reports are from people testing this with their monitors closed.

let me know if you want some more info - this machine is BEAUTIFUL and snappy!

Hey all,

Day 2 on my new 15". My model is:

1.5Ghz G4
128MB VRAM
80GB 5400rpm HD
512MB ram
blah blah blah

So, my thoughts so far:

It is built rock solid. No wobble, feels great. The lid has a bit of uneveness, there is a gap on the right side when closed, but not on the left. Couldn't care about this though, my iBook was the same way. It is stable resting on a table.

I thought at first the screen looked great, and for the most part it does. It is MUCH brighter than my old iBook screen, but when I switched to a dark background I found one pixel stuck on blue. It isn't noticed at all except against dark backgrounds. The sucky thing is that it is almost in the middle of the screen. I am getting used to it, and understand that getting a picture perfect LCD screen is a pipe dream at these prices everytime... with millions of pixels there will be bad ones from time to time.

I xbenched it. here were my totals:

Plugged in, highest performance: 139
On battery, reduced performance: 109

I have been playing Halo on it all day today, and with some tweaking it runs fine. In one scene there were 14 enemies on the screen, and the frame rate dropped. I am pretty sure the "bad guys" are CPU and RAM intensive, and if I only have 512MB ram this could be a bottleneck for it. With up to 5-8 bad guys on the screen I had no frame rate stutters on medium setting.

The hard drive is super quiet, and I don't think I have kicked on the fan at all yet. The superdrive is a bit noisy when it is taking in and spitting out discs, but runs just fine.

All in all, this machine rocks. The one bad pixel visible when I am working on dark screens put a bit of a knot in my stomach but, well, that's life. Everything else about this machine is fantastic, and I am glad I waited.

I will be plugging my guitar into garageband tonight and see how that goes.

Cheers!

James

Powerofthekiwi!~

What about the heat during all this.

So far I see quite a few units being delivered with stuck pixels!
Whew, I always have trouble with looking at those.
But one person here has actually rubbed it back to good use.

the wobble has been very iffy with people and the closed lid, open lid may be the discerning factor? Anyone understand this?

But the heat issue still has me perplexed.
Some say cool, but others claim warm, hot, Hotter!

Whats with your heat, Powerofthekiwi!

Filemaker does not come with Panther, but a Panther version exists. Microsoft Project is a hot topic on Apple's Discussions board right now:

If I'm working on my powerbook and its on a desk then the heat is very very minimal, only after a lot of processor intesive stuff does it get slightly warm. it is not even comparable to my old ibook DV (gray clamshell).

When it is in my lap it feels warm on the bottom, it is definatly warmer on the bottom then on the top (to the left and right of the trackpad). It doesn't bother me though - computers make heat, period.

New Battery Drain...........

Hey

I'm waiting for my new 17" PB, everythig else has been delivered except the 17" PB

I bought mine from TigerDirect.ca, although they have a TigerDirect.com (US-based)... Definitely worth checking out. The price for which I picked up my 512 stick was almost half of what others were going for.

gopher,

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely have a read... As for Filemaker, would you recommend I take a look at it as well? Is it worth the cost (which I don't know, by the way! )? I'd definitely like some type of record management/client management system... If Filemaker is the solid choice, I'll definitely consider it.

Thanks!

Powerbook G4 Update

I have been using my Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz/1Gb Mem/SD/Fully Loaded for almost a week now and it has performed admirably.
Pros So Far:
1) Great Battery Life
2) Great Performance: Fast Final Cut Performance, not as fast as my DP G5 of course, but admirable for a mobile machine and faster than earlier G4 PB's
3) Heating is better than the 1.25 G4 15", it runs cooler in all situationgs, maybe not as cool as it should be, but cool enough..nonetheless
4) Great Features: Wireless+BTooth+Radeon 9700+4x SD that i love
Cons:
Wobble Wobble: I know i dissed it earlier, but it is sort of getting anoying now.

Best Feature: I feel extremely lucky. Not ONE bad pixel, white spot or mark of any type on my display and the Colors are Beautiful and Well colored. I love the screen all 15.2 inch widescreen inches of it

Recommended with No Reservations except for Price

Protect yourself ..always buy AppleCare

Good Luck

mpopkin

Thanks so much for the update!

Any further takes on the fan noise.
How often and under what situations and how loud and how many levels of loudness. You know level one, slight fan, under what conditions etc and up.

What area is the heat worst, I dont mind it under the computer as with the Ti's but the palm rests would bother me.

Now do you think that the Wobble could have something to do with the lid being closed or open as Kiwi stated>?
