Thanks :)
It is a pitty that you cannot use the web to get the discount... have you tried the phone?
I am not sure that my machine will be here early next week because it is suposed to arrive to luxembourg, then to holland and then to spain... :(

Well my ex-girlfreind ordered an eMac last october/november and I followed its way to her home. When it arrived to Holland it only took 1 day before FedEx came with it to her address... That's from holland to Denmark and to her place in one day - 24 hours. Since you live in Barcelona (big city...) I would say it's quit possible to get it as expected (if it ships in time...) :)

Bye bye Windows

Been lurking on the boards for ages..wondering when I would join the rebellion. Finally took the plunge and bought the 17" PB with full kit just yesterday. Figured its not going to be good waiting for the G5 PB any longer, anyway, I know the current rev is pretty solid (so to speak)...

Just thought I'd tell the world..if any aussies in Melbourne are listening, I'd be curious to hear your opinions if youve purchased/received the 17" yet..any issues?

Anyway...great forum.. :)

Is it possible that this machine beat out my friends dual 1.25 ghz MDD g4? Or did he just run xbench improperly? his total score was a 132.21 and the 15" PB mentioned above beat it in every test except for the disk test. Is that possible?

I honestly wouldn't give xBench too much of your confidence. I did the test 3 times and the scores all fell within 10 points of each-other, but it was not rock solid consistency. I would however say that it is defiantly possible for the 1.5 ghz pb to be faster then the mdd g4.

1) faster g4 processor (newer architecture)
2) faster memory
3) better video card (128 mb RAM0

I'm not sure what else distinguishes the mdd from the pb - but this does not seem like all to unreasonable conclusion to me

God Bless the USA, UK and Aussies in IRAQ, and the Mac people.........

Thanks all for taking the time for me, Now this is why I switched to Mac, I've never met so many helpful people.

I also wanted to give my 17" PB shipping update:

11:27 am Picked up by FedEx SHANGHAI CN

11:37 am Left FedEx Origin Location SHANGHAI CN

Apr 29, 2004 9:30 pm Left FedEx Ramp SHANGHAI CN

3:37 pm Arrived at Sort Facility ANCHORAGE AK

4:02 pm Left FedEx Sort Facility ANCHORAGE AK --- how soon do you think it will be in my hands,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm so freakin EXCITED, this is my first Mac and I figured since I could call the my midlife crisis, I should go with the Porche------ 17" loaded Powerbook.

Concerned about switching

After a few years of designing graphics on a PC I decided it was time to make the switch to an Apple. I went with the powerbook 15" Superdrive. But I am concerned about learning the new Operating System. How hard it is to learn OSX. How long did it take you to become fast and proficient.

I think it will go to Indianapolis next (probably get there late tonight/early am). Then if it leaves there tomorrow monring, it should arrive in Texas sometime Friday early pm. I don't think you will get it until Monday Morning. Now, if things went really well, then it arrives in Indianapolis around 10 - 11pm MT, then leaves for Texas around 2am MT, and gets to the FedEx depot around 6am MT, and then on the truck for delivery around 7am MT. What does your Expected Delivery date say?

Let me give you my experinces with OSX. First, I have been a major user of Linux (kinda sounds like a drug). I do use Windows (a bad drug), but mostly for games, so I really don't jump much into it. When I first got my PB, OSX wasn't as intuitive as I expected. It took me a couple of minutes to get used to the way the interface worked. (I am still getting frustrated with some of the functions, like clicking the red x button, but realizing it didn't close the program). Installing applications is a lot different than windows. For example, a lot of the programs out there don't have "install" programs. You download them, (in a dmg, sit, etc format), and then just move the program to your applications folder. Double click it, and your are off. To delete, just move the program to the trash. As you know, with windows, who knows where things get installed. And when the application does have an "install" program, it usually puts everything in one directory, so if you want to delete it, just move the directory to the trash. All in all, I love OSX, it is quick, nice to look at, and fun to use.

Don't worry about it tomatobush - I've been using PCs all my life (22 of it) and I took to OSX like a fish in water. Granted I've been running my IBM T40 on a pseudo OSX look for nearly a year now (Yzdock, StyleXP, the lot), but it just works. Right click becomes ctrl-click. You do a lot more dragging (or maybe it's just cos i'm new heh, i cld prob use apple-c or x more). The slickness of the OS blows me away.

All in all, I'm a happy switcher.

Oh on a sidenote, I convinced my housemate to switch to Apple, and she got a 12" PB on my friend's annual 15% employee Family + Friends scheme. From order to receive in 4 days! Amazing...glad to say both of us have no pixel anomalies at all!

Three cheers for Apple QCC! Hip hip hooray!

Got it today, after...

...being told my BTO 15" P'book might not ship until MAY 3 (YIKES!) -- but then it turned out to ship just 16 hours or so later than the originally-quoted ship date (which was 4/26). After reading all the comments about wobbles & stuck/dead pixels, I was virtual-ly biting my nails until it arrived & I got a chance to turn it on & find out that *my* 'book has NO (visible) pixel anamolies -- for which I am **SO** grateful :D :D :D -- and also NO wobbles. It sits square on its butt on the tabletop, w/no corners unbalanced. I *DO* observe a VERY TINY gap (when the 'book is closed) between the front right corner of the screen and the computer -- and I do mean T I N Y : I'm talkin' about *MAYBE* 1/8th of an inch or less. So no it's not perfectly symmetrical -- and doesn't bother me for a nanosecond. I'm just happy to have gotten it pretty much on time (only 50 hours from China to Alaska to Indiana to California!) and in great condition. :D :)

I haven't had enough time on it yet to observe much about heat production but so far I will say that it does get warmer than I want my knees to be. (Yes I know they're not supposed to be used on laps anymore.) But this doesn't bother me either -- it's easy to cope with, so no biggie.

At the last minute I decided to buy a *real nice* portable color printer (even smaller than the P'book and every bit as sleek!): the Canon i80, for $249 at the Apple Store. It's an "Editor's Choice" on CNET (http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_i80/4505-3156_7-30732992.html?tag=lst ) and also got many good recommendations from actual consumers (see the CNET review). So far I am very pleased to have it, for "prosumer"-level (if not "professional"-level) photo printing needs. I don't use the add-ons (yet!), such as Bluetooth printing capability, but there are some real nice ones on this printer. :)

Thanks to all who have followed my brief P'book drama, which I believe has now come to A VERY HAPPY conclusion :p

Got it!

Whoo Hoo! I finally got mine too. I couldn't even sleep last night... literally I was watching the darn fed ex tracking page all night long. I've been up for almost 45 hours now. I'm about to die.

I love this thing... all 15" of it! Very fast. Perfect screen, no wobbles, no dead pixels, nice keyboard. The battery still lacks a little but it's such a powerful machine I guess I understand. I still got about 3 hours of internet downloading and installing programs after I calibrated it.

This sucker does burn though. I never realized how hot these things got. I always thought the people complaining on here were just wimps... but this thing is freakin hot on the bottom... I'm gonna let it run for a little bit tomorrow and get a temperature reading.

All in all thought this thing totaly beats my expectations!
Go buy one!

Well im very very pleased for you, but mine (shipping to the Uk) was "picked up" in china on the 27th, and has been ever since- yours was picked up and then changed its status 10mins later!

shock of the new!

seems us brits are way down on the list of priority!

don't feel to bad its keeping my pb company from the sounds of it. Mine was picked up on the 26th and hasn't moved since then.

I'm wondering if there was a plane disaster or something.

xBench

Although xBench now detects dual processor systems reliably, its benchtest results don't make good use of the second processor. It scores dual G4 systems way too low.

On a PB note, I am pleased that there is so little difference between 1.33 GHz machines (like my 12") and 1.5 GHz machines. Maybe 129 vs 135 looking at a spread of results.

My guess is that it missed the cut off time for the truck/plane that goes to San Antonio. If your estimated ship time is may 3rd then it'll get there Monday. They are usually pretty accurate on those estimates. Never earlier, never later. I've had my fair share of packages delivered from fedex.

hi all, i've got my new PBG4 1.5 GHZ portable. All ok, no dead pixels, etc. It's a very fine and snappy machine. The only gripe I have for the moment is that it is impossible to boot from an external drive with a Carbon Copy clone of my previous OS 10.3.3 from a Desktop G4. Anyone else having this problem. Maybe, this version of the PB uses a specific version of the OS ??

thanks for any suggestions

Gongratulations. How come you got your comp. that fast??? That's impressing. 2 more weeks and I will hopefully get mine - if I'm lucky...
