Thats a neat setup - I'm going to need to get some more storage for my 15" (already capping the 80 GB hard drive!) Anyone have some good FW 800 Drive recomendations?
I just finished many many days of research on that topic. I'm assuming it's for archiving? I've heard good things about the ezquest FW800 drives. Check em out at

http://www.maxxdigital.com/quest.htm

They are overbuilt for extra ruggedness and have the Oxford 922 chipset (very nice). Plus a 2 year warranty. I have had really bad experiences with Lacie- I can't figure out why people on forums always recommend them. I had two Lacie products DOA out of the box, and a thrid broke down after 8 months- had to send it in for warranty. Every pro audio salesman and friend I called said "stay away from LAcie" so I guess I'm not the only one. However, Lacie's are pretty affordable.

Personally, i'm going for the drive I posted above (storcase FW800 with 2 Seagate Barracudas). It's got a 7 year warranty. The problem with FW drives is that it's not a question of IF they'll fail...it's WHEN. When dealing with a backup drive for my precious storage- I'll invest a little extra for peace of mind.

hi, what did you update ? The cloned external HD ?

Nope, it wasn't an external drive. I cloned from an older iBook to a new one via firewire mode (put new model in firewire target mode - startup with command-T). The new model then wouldn't boot. Used install DVD to then 'update' the OS on the new machine. All was well then.

Cloning one machine to another if they are different models generally doesn't work well because different models need to have different pieces of the operating system installed.

I just bought a good fast 250 mb ide drive and stuck it in a fw800/fw400/usb2.0 box. Not only was it $100 cheaper than the prebuilt systems there, but I could pick and choose from the top of the line drives, and I get 3 types of hookup. I use the fw800 on my pb, and the usb2.0 on my girlfriend's 12" pb because it only has fw400 and I have that cable in a box somewhere. :)

That's a good way to go, but I have had so much gear fail on me that i spend the extra loot for peace of mind: does it have a 7 year warranty?

I just purchased a Powerbook 15" (1.33 gig) from the NYU bookstore. They have a promotion that includes Apple Care for $1850.

So far, it runs great. It's not dramatically faster than my Powerbook (550mhz), but it runs much more stable. I will report more after I increase the RAM and install more applications.

Does anyone have any recommendation for RAM? I know there are several non-Apple brands (Crucial, Kingston, Samsung, etc..). Do any of them perform better (faster or lower power consumption)?

Is that a joke, the new PB NOT faster than a 550?

My Ti 1 Giger is faster than my Ti 800, so i would think that a 1.33 with faster ram etc would BLOW away a 550!

He's not using an objective measure of performance. Clearly the machine is faster (probably close to three times faster) and there is no reason it should be more stable than his older Powerbook. OS X is OS X. It's not more stable just because the CPU is faster.

Relatively Relative

Doesn't this just demonstrate that for most people that are just 'using' the machine, all these xbench tests are just so much hot air. How can you honestly jusge whether a machine is that much faster when one is still typing docs at 20 words/min. Sure, photoshop and 3D renderingmight do it, but for many long time Mac users and switchers this is not their usage. We write, edit, view, read, review, send, receive. It's a tool that is cool and pretty relaibel, that's all. Can any of us really conceive of a time in the next say 50 years, when the human mind will honestly think, wow, that computer is just SO fast. We get used to things, adapt to the new very quickly and speed thus becomes relative to a very wide set of variables.

I'm impressed for those who replied how much faster the new Powerbooks are than the TiBooks.

So, after installing some programs and further using it. The Powerbook is noticeably faster than my 550 TiBook. Specifically opening and using apps. It's also noticeably quiet.

I ran xBench. Here are the numbers:

powerbook 15"
1.33 Gig
256 RAM
60 gig HD
512 L2

Results:112.21
CPU Test: 160.30
Thread Test: 115.35
Memory Test: 123.00
System: 127.79
Stream: 118.56
Quartz Graphic Test: 161.66
Open GL Test: 103.41
User Interface Test: 212.82
Disk Test: 53.21

As for RAM, I'm hunting for a 1 gig. Besides Crucial, is there any other brands to recommend? Samsung, Kingston, Viking, Transcend

If you're at NYU, check out Digital Society on 10th and Broadway. They offer 1 gig installed for 350. It's lifetime ram. Other than that- Crucial.

Jesus, this thread is still alive?

My BTO 17" PB arrives via FedEx tomorrow from MacWarehouse. Ordered on the 20th and was slowed a bit from not going direct through Apple to save tax. Then the 2-day shipping hit the weekend. So, alive or not I've got to give one report on it when it's up and running.

My CDW - also on it's way!

As recently as Friday my CDW account manager was telling me May 14th at the earliest for a BTO 15" fully pimped. Now their web site says "shipped" - review to follow.

very well said
(despite the spelling errors... heh)

I remember reading a gag article in MacUser or MacWorld many years ago about a mock review of M$ Word version 20 or so. They ragged on how it took more than a millisecond for it to translate a document into Mandarin Chinese (including all colloquial variations). Unless you’ are a gamer, or doing video or other high end stuff, you’re fine w/ OS 9.2 running Office ’98.
But it IS fun to have a new toy… and OSX is sure pretty.

Update: 12" Status Report

Well, here's my first post from my new 12"! I'm loving this machine... so sleek and just so nice! :)

I haven't installed my stick of 512 RAM yet, but will be doing so in a few minutes. I wanted to compare the speed of the system before and after.

So far this machine just rocks... From an aesthetic point-of-view, I have never seen a machine so beautiful. Everyone in my family who has seen it says "oh wow, that's sooo nice and soooo small"... Oh, how they are so right! :p

I'm still trying to figure out the OS, however. In some ways its similar to Windows (in terms of shortcuts, etc.), but I've got a lot of learning to do on this machine. I'm still trying to locate iLife'04... Can't seem to find iDVD or GarageBand.. Does it install with 10.3.3, or should another CD have come in the package?

As for heat... This thing is NOTHING like my 15" PC. I have yet to experience ANY of the issues people were claiming with RevA and RevB. After about an hour or so of using the machine, I closed it up, and picked it up to put away; the machine was warm... As an example, think of a cup of coffee/tea that has gone cold... It's still drinkable, but nobody enjoys a "warm" coffee/tea... That's how warm this thing is... ;)

The iLife applications should be preinstalled on your machine. Look in the Applications folder.

Very Odd

That's the weird part... When I look in the applications folder, I see:

iCal
iPhoto
iTunes
iChat
iMovie

But no iDVD or GarageBand...

Is there a way to manually install them? The only two DVDs I have in the box are the 2 software install/restore discs... I checked those discs, and don't see anything about iLife on them.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks,
Frank

Where can you/did you find a box to put the drive in? and is it durable enough when mounted inside? What does a box like that cost?

Thanks
