Anyone have some benchmarks of these new Powerbooks running FW800 drives? They SHOULD be faster than the stock drives and even the 5400. The scores dont seem in line. The Xbench disk scores have been TERRIBLE so far... your machine is only as fast as its slowest component. I can see a real problem with these machines in that area.

Also, one question, can you boot of a external FW800 drive?

I've been lurking in this forum for four months. However, it can't print via Samba so I couldn't access the inkjet printer for which the Linux box is the print server.

The easiest way:
Start the Printer Setup Utility (it's in /Applications/Utilities)
Click Add while holding down the Option key (a.k.a. the alt key) and in the next drop-down box you should be able to select 'Windows Printing', If I remember correctly. Voila!!

:) This worked perfectly! It searched for and found the Samba server again, but this time it also found the printer queue! I didn't have to tell it anything except to login. It's printing right now. Thanks, NicoMan!

As a stretch goal, I'd like to be able to setup the Apple as a print server for the HP, so the Windoze and Linux machines can print to it, but that's probably not something many people do. ;) I am so deliriously happy with this machine so far I can't even begin to tell people. (though somehow I manage :D .)

I ordered a 15" BTO on 4/26 and it was supposed to ship no later than yesterday. However, this morning I saw this:

"Due to an unexpected supply delay, we are unable to ship the following
item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted"

Argh!

Prolonging Battery Life - Best Strategy?

My iBook became a desktop after 18 months, and yes I could replace the battery. But what is the best strategy for prolonging the life span of my New PB's battery. I tend to leave it plugged in all the time (and rarely restart) unless I am actively working on it, but is it better to let it run down and recharge frequently, and is an almost permanent full charge harmful?

more power to you...

I'm so excited, this is my first Mac, I'm a proud switcher...I sat in front of the unopened box for hours, yes hours, then I placed box on table for and hour.... nothing wrong, it's great, I even took some days off work to play like a kid.

Michael, good for you! Don't ever forget how much you've enjoyed this experience--it's a reminder to the rest of us who have bought two, or three, or a handful of new mac powerbooks over the years and who might not still appreciate the thrill of ownership the way you did. We're all lucky to have this hardware to enjoy, and your experience to remind us of the thrill.

And THEN if we put that pleasure into perspective, and realize it's just a tool and toy, and that we're living daily lives free of imminent danger and no one's dead or dying in our immediate families, and if we're lucky enough to say all of that, we can all realize how very, very lucky we really are. We should never forget that.

Ordered the slower 15" PowerBook (with one 512meg chip) with edu-discount yesterday after pondering upon it for six months. Although the dealer said that they had one in storage I still didn't expect it to arrive today. But it did!

No wobble, no dead pixels, no fault whatsoever. Perfect piece of hardware. Furthermore, this is my first Mac (that's why it took me half a year to make the final step). I work with Linux/UNIX all the time so in hindsight I waited far too long to migrate since I was able to install/configure all the crucial programs I need in just a few moments. Better start saving for that G5 desktop now...

I have been wondering the same thing in order get the best life out of my battery.

I am close to you in use. Though I do take my PB off the plug at least once a week and when I do I let it discharge all the way down.

All LI-ion batteries start to die after they are created. During normal use, you're better keeping the batteries topped up then keeping them discharged, so what you are doing is fine. Apple recommends for long term storage, that you keep the adaptor plugged in, or fully charge the battery before storing it for under 5 months. Over 5 months, they recommend you do a full charge, then remove the battery for long term storage.

Since you are using the machine as a desktop, keeping the battery fully charged is normal and won't affect the performance or expected life expectancy.

Every month you should do a battery calibration, which is basically doing a full charge, then using your PB on batteries until it depletes and goes to sleep automatically, then do another full charge. This basically keeps your battery meter calibrated, especially if you run the batteries alot.

Thank You...........

I have been reading all the great information about people getting their new powerbooks.

I am happy to see a few more , completely happy people with their powerbooks. and fewer with stuck pixels and some happy with the warm palm rests.

The wobbling and pixel problems seems to have tapered off, is it possible that the percentage of or ratio of these problems is small or is it merely a reflection of this board, wish there was a way to really compare the data.

Like a giant graphic PIE with all the mac rumors purchases and their production values!

If ony there was a macrumors god able to correlate this data.

Didnt we use to have something like this where we could select certain choices, likes and dislikes.

How about a log that takes information.

Wobble
Pixels
heat.

I think that this would be great!

I hear ya aswitcher. I'm in Sydney too and waiting........waiting........waiting.... -_-

I wanted to thank this forum...and especially this MASSIVE topic, in helping me take the plunge and order my powerbook (15" / 1.5 / 128vram / faster hd / ram on one chip to upgrade later).

This will be my first mac since System 7.5.5...seems so long ago. I've really missed it. I hope osx will satisfy (i'm sure it will).

Once my powerbook finally arrives I'll post a quick review and report on the issues addressed in here if there's anyone else who hasn't got their's yet :p

Aussies in Sydney are now reporting new PBs appearing, even custom BTOs from Apple!

Shouldn't be too much longer...

Since PBs have finally arrived Down Under, I can't be so much longer for them to appear in Switzerland...actually, the store I ordered from has everything in stock now, except the machine I want (15", 1.5Ghz) and the 17".
Should have ordered the 1.3Ghz.... ;)

Mine reached Northampton just a few hours drive from my house earlier today. That being the case I'm on for a delivery tomorrow. Now all I need is my ScreenSaverZ and sleevZ things to arrive from the states and I'm all set.

Dead pixel

Heh, thought it was dead and stuck the color red. Now, it is gone and the are where it was is working fine.

same here- no probems at all- got my 15" 1.33 today too! Throwing a gig of RAM in it tomorrow to see what it can do. By the way, the 1.33 is not much slower at all than the 1.5.

maybe not that much slower, but it is a earlier generation mobile g4 processor so their is a power/performance difference and the margin is larger not in speed but in processing(altivec) performance. The 1.5 is a more stable processor in general, but not swaying from the 1.33 at all, but i love my 1.5 ghz g4 and the backlit keyboard is great, good luck

has anyone had any problems with their new 17" books?

mine has this wierd static even when you put the speakers on mute.

Also, the most worriesome, is when the CPU get very hot and the second fan turns on, the fan sounds like its "grinding" a bearing.

NOT GOOD!

The computer may have to go back....just wondering if anyone else is getting the "static" or if everything is quiet for the rest of you.
