Requires 10.7.3 - ARGH!

I was planning on upgrading... just wanted to have 10.7.3 bake a bit more. So - upgrade entire OS for BETA App... not thinking that is worth it.

Maybe I will take the plunge... maybe I will wait!

Anyone notice that on Apple's OSX Mountain Lion page, there's not a single picture of a Mac Pro?

Clearly, "trucks" will play little (or no) role in Apple's future.

man on man i hope they do release a Mac Pro, I honestly can't replace my Mac Pros ( Got 3 ) with iMacs i just can't i have so many cards installed and I'm not big in external devices ( they are on a rack ) don't want to clutter more stuff there.. please please Apple don't kill the Mac Pro !

I have 4 iMacs right now, and i just can't seem to adapt to it. my Wife likes it tho and i have one set up for guests in my house. but my Main is a Pro and always have been for years. I just can't :( Please please please Apple don't kill the Pro.

to be honest you have enough cash to Keep 1-2 Products in production even if they don't yield you that much profit. please think of all your user and don't force us to use things we are not happy with please!

I'm excited!!!

I just watched the sneak peak video and I have to say I almost soiled myself. I think it will be great.

To those who say Lion was buggy or half baked, I can only say I've suffered little issues. Much less than my Windows 7 experience or that of others' Windows 7 experiences. So while it might not be perfect, I think Mac OS is the best we have.

I'd been thinking of joining the Mac dev program as well as my current iOS one, and this is another incentive.

It does, I get a badge count even when the application is closed. :)

I've got a badge count, but it says there's one unread message. I know there are no unread messages because I'm looking at my phone right now, and I can't find any windows that might have messages in them.

Still can't associate with a phone number?

This is a great addition for the Mac to quickly reply to iMessages, but I'm disappointed that it forces you into setting your iMessages as coming from an email address. All my iMessages have the "caller ID" set coming from my phone number on my phone, not an email address. I think that's the most annoying thing about this. If I start iMessaging people from my Mac, then it's going to show as coming from my email address, and the person I'm messaging ultimately ends up with two different conversations and not one unified one like it should be. I know the solution to that would be for the person to have my email address associated with their contact entry for me, but that's a horrible work around.

Is there not a way around that? Disappointing.

Not for me it doesn't. It shows messages counts from when it was last open.

Plus, I don't really like it in the dock. I'd like it running so I get a popup when I get a message just like FaceTime. Im sure this will be included in mountain lion though!

I closed it and shot three messages at my account. Seems to work for me when closed.

Not as great as I first thought, the only problem with it, is that you can't send iMessages to peoples numbers, only to their email address, which doesn't really make it useful as there will be double ups of conversations.

It's still beta so fingers crossed that they change this.

I hope they keep screen sharing because I use this a lot. I often initiate a video chat and then ask to share the screen so I can either troubleshoot or teach my mom, dad, or father in law how to use their new Macs. It is invaluable.

Screen sharing is there in the Beta. I haven't tried it though...

Sometimes I get messages to the iPhone and not MessagesBETA, but then sometimes I get messages to MessagesBETA but not the iPhone. It takes 5-10mins for each of them to update.

Has anyone else got this issue?

Thanks

Mine sends to peoples numbers fine. I'm sure that's the whole point of the update.

**** sucks it doesn't save history and separates different logs for phone numbers and emails. even it's for the same person.

Could you try closing it down with no notifications, and then getting somebody to send an iMessage to you?

Sure thing, I'm seeing little push notification numbers appear next to the icon. The App is closed and I had deleted all prior conversations before closing it. Seems very odd that it's not working for you, I wish I could do more to help.

Have you perhaps tried to reinstall it? I know it's a long shot, but you never know.

if only it supported Facebook it would replace trillian for me.

It does support Facebook... though Jabber:

First, find your Facebook username by going to http://www.facebook.com/your_user/. Next, Open iChat, then select iChat » Preferences and click on the Accounts tab.

Click on the + (plus) sign to add a new account, with these settings:
Account Type is Jabber Account
Account name is your_user@chat.facebook.com, and enter your password
Click the drop-down arrow to reveal Server options. Enter chat.facebook.com as the server name.
Enter 5222 as the port and click Done.
Click Done again, and you are good to go.

Messages on the Mac is blue... on the iPhone it's green. I can't keep it all straight! :D

Well, on the iPhone, they use the colors to differentiate SMS vs. iMessage send/receive. Green means SMS, which, depending on your plan, you may pay per message; blue means iMessage. Since the Mac is iMessage-only, it does makes sense. (Plus it continues the basic look of iChat's icon.)

One of the things that they need to work on is consistency. There are some more general inconsistencies that occurred because of the merging of some iOS features to the Mac.

That is a good point though. Although, I think I might like the icon to be the same for both.
