I am not understanding something here. When I click on the protection shield next to the address bar it states that 3 trackers were prevented from tracking me. If I go look at the privacy report it says that there were 5 trackers that were prevented from tracking me. This is in relation to the macrumors website.
If you check it by clicking the privacy shield it will show you the tracker of the actual opened site. In the privacy report it accumulates all your visited sites.

By the way: for me its actual showing 22 prevented trackers here in this MacRumors thread and not only 3. And in the privacy reports it shows me 53 different trackers for MacRumors

macOS Big Sur didn't launch alongside iOS 14, iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, and watchOS 7 today, with the update coming later this fall, but Apple did release the Safari 14 update for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users.

Safari 14 brings improved performance, customizable start pages, a Privacy Report to see which cross-site trackers are being blocked, and a new tab bar design that provides tab previews so you can see what you have open at a glance. Today's update also removes Adobe Flash. Apple's release notes for Safari 14 are below:The new Safari 14 update can be downloaded by opening up System Preferences and choosing the Software Update option.

Is there a quick visual way to tell which tab is the active window? I like to close tabs after reading, and after a long post I don't remember which tab I am on. With Safari 14 I can not distinguish my open tab from any other tab.

You don't see a difference on your Safari where there are darker colored tabs and a single lighter colored tab? The lightest color tab is the active tab.

To what benefit if I may ask?

Just a routine I like to do when updating macOS software. I usually do this for point releases and supplemental updates. Or I will use the full installer if that is available. These will refresh the OS system files. Sometimes this can correct issues that come up and I have seen it fix issues. That is the long answer to as why.

I realized after I posted that that I am running the Wipr extension which also blocks trackers. When I disabled Wipr the count went up to 23. It is amazing that all this time the tracking was really that bad and most of us did not have any clue how bad it really was.

This is great. My iMac Late 2012 didn't make the cut this time around. The new Safari was the only real Big Sur feature I really wanted. Glad it's here for Catalina users.

I didn't see it for my mid-2012 MacBook Pro but I've got Firefox, which is way ahead anyway. Safari should be up with Chrome, but without the bloat.

Apple saw this and pushed Safari 14 at me. 😁

I miss Top Sites already, and hate the fact that I can't rearrange or add frequently visited sites to the list (I can drag them out, but can't put them in order I want)

<Show all tabs> is the closest thing if I keep a bunch of sites open. But this freezes my iMac running Catalina 😭

Can you install an extension and put it on the address bar? It should show it blue.

I see what you mean. The one extension that I was using, Wipr, did not have the option to be put on toolbar. I just installed Adblock Plus and it had the option to be put on the toolbar and it is blue.

I have switched from using Wipr to Adblock Plus now that Safari handles the tracking prevention. Adblock Plus handles ad blocking now. No more ads and no more tracking.

It is so ugly. Not sure why Apple wants us to know its a third party extension.

Maybe because this is for Catalina and Mojave, where a lot of folks, by choice or otherwise, will be staying :)

When Apple has updated Safari within the core OS update, they've often separately released it for older OS' simultaneously. I hear you on some users staying behind Big Sur, just not sure why they went through the hassle to release it separately now vs. waiting a month for Big Sur.
