  • Pinned tabs don't follow you to new tab groups so you have to set them up all over again for each group. I mean REALLY?????????????
    • EDIT: Actually its even worse. You can't use PINNED tabs at all in groups. Just GARBAGE.
  • Not having tab groups work like Chrome is annoying because all they really are in Safari are new Windows.
  • Having the color of the toolbar/tabbar change as you scroll through a page is ANNOYING especially if there is a lot of White color. (show color in tab bar is Off so that clearly doesn't do a darn thing)
  • Having all of the tabs including Pinned tabs DIM when I click another app SUCKS. Some of my tabs have notification icons and that makes those hard if not impossible to see.
Apple will NEVER get Safari right.

Apple today released Safari 15 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina devices, with Apple introducing support for features that are going to be coming in the macOS Monterey update set to be released laster this year.

Safari 15 introduces a new look for Safari with rounded, more defined tabs and support for transparency, a compact tab bar option that can be toggled on or off, and Tab Groups. Apple's notes for the update are below:

Safari 15 can be downloaded by opening up the System Preferences interface and selecting the Software Update option. There is no word yet on when macOS Monterey will be released, but it could come in October alongside new Macs as Apple is expected to hold a Mac-centric event this fall to debut new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

I like safari, but lack of extensions keeps me from dd it.

I don't like the tabs, the page you are on used to have no color in the tab, now it's dark gray or light gray depending on what? It seems disjointed, and the rounding serves no purpose.

Update-it goes dark gray when it is clicked on. Still don't like the look of this

FYI after upgrading, I quit Safari and re-opened and all of my open tabs were closed, with no way to re-open them (Reopen All Windows from Last Session opened a blank window). Had a dozen or so tabs open from the past few weeks that I was planning to read I have no idea what they were now...
I had a similar problem where after upgrading from Safari 14, Safari 15 reopened all the windows apparently but only one of them had open tabs (the other windows were just blank untitled single tabs). I've had similar problems occasionally with earlier Safari versions, and I thought maybe restoring a previous version of ~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist would work (I think that is what I did in the past) but it hasn't. I had at least a dozen windows with various sets of tabs related to different tasks/interests, so I lost a lot of important context and search effort.

So, can anyone recommend me some Safari Extensions? Chrome has tons, but Safari doesn't really have any. Has this new version incentivized devs to port their Chrome extensions to Safari, as was the intention, during WWDC in June?
Here’s a few that I’ve got installed. Keep in mind it’s basically Day 1, so expect more in the coming days…

(I’ve got Nitefall turned off because I think it needs more work. Almost TOO dark)FEB7314C-58B1-42A8-80A6-0DB72DC1BAED.jpeg

I had a page freeze for the first time ever right after the update. The tab shadings are still annoying. The current page should be blank and clear, not shaded.

The tabs look awful now even with the color feature off. Call them rounded if you want, but to me they look like 2d rectangular buttons as opposed to the elegant 3d tabs of safari 14. Those at least had shading and looked solid. It's like we've reverted to the time before computers had a gpu. It's hard to differentiate which is the active tab now. Hate it. Wish I hadn't.

Yeah, this isn't great... I can also confirm other posters reports about very major bugs with reopening closed windows or restoring previous sessions. It seems completely broken. If you rely on session history at all, I recommend you avoid this update.

For those who may have found all of your session windows lost, "Reopen Last Closed Window" being available in the menu but simply doing nothing, etc. etc., then you can at least try going to "History" -> "Recently Closed" & seeing if you can spot your windows there. Mine were listed, so I was able to then go into the submenu for each 'lost' window and use "Reopen Window". I recommend NOT first closing all of your single-tab-only windows from a previous session if present, because that might disrupt the history even more. Only close those afterwards.

Subjectively, the they-are-buttons-now-not-tabs waste horizontal space in the gaps between them; you can't turn off the website icons anymore; the icons turn into a weird ugly squished "x" on hover that closes the tab and is far too easy to click on by accident when switching "tabs" (buttons). All-in Safari 15 seems to just give us a bunch of bugs and nothing obvious in return, despite months of beta testing. Shrug. Poor quality work. If you possibly can, give this a miss until it's had a few patch releases. You're not missing out on anything.

Guys if you don't like Safari don't use it. Apple is too controlling. Things are beautiful on the other side, using FireFox and Brave (Chrome without Google surveillance code) both of which are open source which is so much better for you on the privacy side and they let you do much more than Safari with extensions. Most problems I have with websites are Safari and its webkit engine anyway.

If you are looking for webkit engine and something that gives the same cool and quite performance of Safari, there is a new browser in beta called Orion , its webkit based, get updates for older MacOS versions unlike Safari, and allows use of Firefox and Chrome extensions! Signup and you will receive an invitation link in some days.

This is a disaster on my 2015 MacBook Pro. Anyone know how I can revert to an earlier version?

Why what happened?

Really not liking the changes to Safari, but I left it behind a long time ago for Firefox.

FOSS FTW!

Very cool we can get browser tabs on Mac before Monterey releases. I'm just not sure which is best to set the tab groups up on first to ensure a good syncing... iPhone or Mac?

I have been bitten before.

There are options in the browsers under bookmarks where you can book mark ALL opened tabs in each Window. You can save a copy. There is also an export option under File to user with other browsers too.
