My one complaint is...doesn't *dark gray* usually mean something like "inactive"? I'm having trouble figuring out which tab I'm in when I only have 2 or 3 open because I keep thinking the *lighter* colored tab is the active one, not the *darker* one.
Yes! Same here. The dark grey tab looks like it is in the background, not the light grey active tab.

Just submitted requests at the Apple feedback page to 1) make the active tab light again and 2) put tabs back below the Favorites bar.

I'll do the same.

Part of the dissonance with the light/dark inactive/active tabs is that the light tab also shows the favicon of the page, while the dark tab shows the X to close it. Which, yes, makes sense (because you want to close the active tab), but at first glance, showing the favicon on the other tab reinforces the view that it is the active page you are on.

That could be solved by making the X appear when you mouse over the favicon - as indeed it does when you want to close the INACTIVE tab. Not having the favicon of the ACTIVE page visible is very odd.

The Safari UI team really seemed to miss the ball with this one.

I like the active tab color dark. I immediately can see which tab is active. Before it was always a problem for me to distinguish between active and inactive tabs.
As far as the design concerns, I am loving it. I love the compact Tab view and have it enabled on all my devices. I love tab groups and I use them extensively. Tab Groups help me avoid having a lot of tabs visible at the same time and also help me focus on a task. Overall, I am loving the new Safari and I don't share the criticism.

I feel like we’re going to see a lot of changes with Safari as each point update is released.. Apple really only had the benefit of receiving feedback from generally techy people. Now they’re going to start getting feedback from the “I’m not very tech savvy” type of people.

Pinned tabs are glitchy. When trying to rearrange one, some of them disappear, or safari minimizes as if you are trying to drag to open a new window.

How many years ago did the others switch to HTTPS by default?

The good thing is that it doesn't crash and Hulu doesn't complain that privacy tracking is an ad-blocker.

M1 Mac Mini - 16GB.

Anyone notice that when you close a tab, it's not a smooth animation?
As the next tab moves across to the end of the screen, it's jittery.

I'm having a bug on Catalina where cmd+click to open a link in a new tab is broken. The link opens, but when I switch the to the tab it unloads and you're left with the new tab screen instead of the link you clicked. 😭

Thanks ... I'm working on a client's mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro. Installed a new drive and clean Catalina, then all the updates ... and found that Safari launched ... and did literally nothing ... no blank page, can't open preferences, can't do anything at all. Presumed it was an issue with the client's computer and reinstalled ... same result. Wiped and reinstalled again, but didn't do all the updates.

Safari works find on initial install and after installing the 10.15.7 update. I tried to install just the security update (not the Safari 14.xxx and Safari 15, which were listed separately) but they were installed anyway ... and rendered Safari unusable.

So, if you are running Catalina on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch, don't install the new Safari ... or, at least grab this download so you can reinstall a working version.

Updated on my M1 MBA. Safari crashes every time I try to add a bookmark. Sent report to Apple.
Updated to Safari 15 on my M1 desktop yesterday , running BigSur 11.6 (installed last week). When I try to add a bookmark to a Youtube video, Safari crashes. If I have a couple of tabs open, one with a Youtube video and one that is not Youtube, say a news article and I try to bookmark the news article, Safari crashes. If I open the news article in a new window with out a Youtube video in a second tab, I can bookmark the news article. I can save Youtube videos in Firefox and Chrome, and Safari on my iPad.

Phone conversation with Apple Support, so Apple knows about this. They suggested using recovery mode to reinstall my OS, which I decided not to do because I have heard that this can sometimes take hours. I have some workarounds, so I can live with this until the new OS is released or there is another Big Sur update

^^Just found the answer and it won't work. Can't do pinned tabs in Tab Groups.. Anybody finds a way please let us know.

Apple today released Safari 15 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina devices, with Apple introducing support for features that are going to be coming in the macOS Monterey update set to be released laster this year.

Safari 15 introduces a new look for Safari with rounded, more defined tabs and support for transparency, a compact tab bar option that can be toggled on or off, and Tab Groups. Apple's notes for the update are below:

Safari 15 can be downloaded by opening up the System Preferences interface and selecting the Software Update option. There is no word yet on when macOS Monterey will be released, but it could come in October alongside new Macs as Apple is expected to hold a Mac-centric event this fall to debut new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.
