This just means they plan to release 4.3 soon with video Airplay support. There is not enough time for developers to remove 4 and 5 finger gestures from there apps. That would delay 4.3 at least 2 months because some apps would need to have the UI redone. I would much rather they release it later than have that hold up everything else.

Arghhhhhh !!!!!

This was the ONE MAIN THING I was looking forward to.

Nothing else.

Dam Apple for deliberately holding things back, looks like they are back to their old tricks again :(

Apps don't stay "open" in the background.

Your system would make things complicated, and not very user friendly.

You should research how apple's 'multitasking' works.

I didn't mean to imply the whole app stays open and running. I think we all know how multitasking cleverly lets apps access set services etc, but the point is, right now, EVERY app you open defaults to multitasking and needs to be manually closed down with a bunch of extra taps and holds and taps. It's pretty tedious when 99% of the time you don't need apps multitasking.

A simple preference of "multitasking on by default: yes/no" would be handy, and if "no" was selected, you'd simply hold the home button to "minimize" that app.

...the way we did multitasking on iOS before Apple included it. Simple, easy, clean. No fiddling around.

I think there was a 4.2 before 4.2.1 anyway. It was quickly fixed

Argh I just want wifi iTunes sync. Please

I was looking forward to this too. Too bad.

I think allowing certain apps to always stay in the multitasking tray by default would be good. Most I close right away because I'm sort of OCD about my tray. :p

I see one problem with this, currently when you hold down the Home button for 2-3 seconds brings up the Voice Control app.

keep half baked features till they're ready

I know a lot of people are bummed over gestures not being in the next public release. I personally think this is wise of Apple. As it is, while viewing a video for instance something as simple as double tap often doesn't execute properly, or trying to activate video controls. Not saying it doesn't work, just quirky and inconsistent.

I still thing the iPhone/iPad have the best touch interface/screen of any device, but I can see people swiping out of an app by accident too easily. I'd rather them get the feature right and it be baked into improvements across the entire os.

I can see the headline now:

Developers Give Apple 1-Finger Gesture Over 4-Finger Gestures in iOS 4.3 Beta.

And the subtitle:

Some upset at the removal from the latest beta, and others upset at the crippling effect the gestures would have on their existing applications.

Exactly. That mess with multitasking and removing apps from the dock was one of the main reasons I returned my first-day purchased iPhone 4 after two days and bought a 3GS that is still running IOS 3. Having replaced my 3G with the iP4 I instantly missed the simplicity and ease of operation of older phone.

Since Apple is more into stuffing more software junk into their telephone than ease of operation with minimal input I may have my 3GS for a very long time. I'm not trying to pretend that my phone is a real computer so telephone / music player / email / calendar / contacts functionality is just fine.

My iPhone mindset probably belongs in the last Ice Age rather than in the next one.

I wish it were optional to turn it off. I would. A lot of apps screw up when resumed. I found I was using data when I was alseep. Started making sure all my apps were closed out and suddenly the issue went away. I know that shouldn't be possible, but you can pull up a chart showing the usage

Beta

Let me know when the final version of the beta comes out so I can have those gestures!!!! I don't care if I have to pay for UDID activation I want those gestures!:D

This doesn't really surprise me. They will probably announce it as a great new feature to the iPad (which it is) when they announce the iPad 2. iPad 2 will come with iOS 4.4 pre-installed which contains the final version of the gestures and can then be installed on iPad 1. In April.

No, please no... those gestures are the biggest advance in my iPad usage patterns since multitasking! Take away every other new feature, just leave my four/five-finger gestures, please?

They want it to be a 'tentpole' for iOS 5.0.

Has anyone using the previous one and this one noticed the data activity indicator showing up briefly when the iPod is opened? Officially, there's no content in that app that needs updating or syncing. Fascinating.

This feature will not be in the GM version, and the betas will expire a few weeks after the GM version has been made public, so you will be wasting $99.

Ooo didn't know that. But I wouldn't be wasting $99 because of ebay!!! UDID activation is about $5 there.
