This is a very unusual move by Apple -- why give the competition advance warning of a major feature of the future?

Better to get it working right ASAP and introduce this in the next update than o wait for another version.

Or is this just a red herring?

Errr no, but good shot! Ain't gonna happen, don't be a hater...
Unless they've changed their minds about it, they've already said that iPad users will only get one major upgrade. That upgrade was from 3.x to 4.2. Touch users get hit with upgrade fees every year, so I wouldn't expect anything different for iPad.

Now, maybe the iPad 2 will release with iOS 4.5 and it'll be included there and maybe Apple won't charge extra. But if it's held to iOS 5.0, I would fully expect there to be an upgrade fee.

Video via Airplay

Does the enhancement to AirPlay enable you to send videos you're recorded on phone to an AppleTV (for instance?).

I assume that apps like TWiT, Netflix and SlingPlayer(about 100 yrs from now) etc. will need to update their apps to support video out- assuming no licensing issues.

Reocrded video worked on Beta 1. Apps didn't. I don't know if that has changed with this one or, more likely, if apps will need updating.

You really think this is a major feature? Apple (>$300Bn company) has had a team of thousands of talented and experienced engineers working on iOS 5 for over a year. This is a footnote.

I don't think the iPod Touch gets changed anymore for new upgrades....

Multi touch

Why would they pull back on this? It just makes sense instead of pressing the home button hundreds of times a day. How long will the switch last? I think this is one of the flaws in the designs of these devices, using a switch with a touch screen right there.

Only new features I see are: hotspot prefs, volume changer on multitasking bar (far far left), 1-2-3-5-10 notifications for SMS, new camera shutter sound, seems a bit zippier. All I can find :p

You can play videos from the camera roll yes. I've not been successful sending any web video to Apple TV yet though, and I think it needs to be added by the developers to send the video in apps, only audio gets sent currently.

For those of you bummed about the four finger gestures, the devs really do need to make way for it first. Our app is one that uses it to jump you to the bottom or top of a list of RSS articles. The problem is if you use the webview to show data it steals all of the good gestures for itself so you are left with four finger gestures :)

I think reserving these system wide for task switching is worth it though. Ill figure out some other gesture.

You are correct, they don't anymore.

For anyone curious why they have been able to stop charging for large updates, use google, but they no longer charge the iPod touch, and I am going to assume they won't charge the iPad as well. (quick answer, it has to do with taxes and accounting)

That was added back with iOS 4.2 and only appears when it detects an Apple TV (for AirPlay).

I don't understand all this disappointment that is raising in this thread.

I do understand that we expect the 4/5 fingers gesture to be featuring in the next update, however Apple gave it to the developer as the iPad already is able to recognise 11 fingers on the screen. Some app do use more than 3 fingers and probably Apple wants feedback first to see whether they can use this or not without making unexpected behaviours with the apps.

I assume that the reason of why they said they will not implement this gestures on the next update is so that developers will be aware that they probably don't have to readapt their apps to it this time.

At least for now I give myself this explanation, rush in hype at the moment is useless.

If then they pull it as upgrade feature that for having it we have to invest money on a new hardware, then yes, we can all give a one finger gesture.

Thumbs down for no finger gestures!

NOOOOO!!!!! I was really looking forward to those new iPad gestures!

4 & 5 Finger gestures would have been a good addition.... I imagine they will come.

Yea it really should be included. What I am wondering is if they are going to hold it for iPad 2 since it is a little on the slow slide when swiping between apps. Another downfall of only 256 MB of ram.

Ya I was excited for the gestures. Those seem to be a much more elegant solution to multi-tasking!

I'm sure they are going to appear in a future version or Apple wouldn't be testing the waters.

I am more curious now about what software features will come to iPad 2 than the hardware! We aren't due for an iOS update until the later half of the year so I wonder what they have in store. I also wonder if Apple is going to keep all iOS devices unified on the same release of iOS now that they all matched up on 4.2 or if they will kind of go back and forth as they did before maybe unifying on each new release but not the point releases. Guess we'll see!

P.S. I will be disappointed if there is no "Retina Display" on iPad 2 now though! :(

I've got a bit of a theory here.
An iPad 2 running iOS 4.3 would be great on the hardware side.
An iPad 2 running iOS 5 would be great on both the hardware and software sides with pretty much double the new features.

So... What if the next iPad gets iOS 5 straight away. Would be nice.

Disappointing, but it just sounds like they want to give the devs enough time to make sure the new gestures don't interfere with their apps.

No, no, no. You got it all wrong! You're supposed to be all upset and whine about it, and bitch about it and say things like "dammit what were they thinking and why wasn't it included" and "I want it now" why, why, why?

Or . . . when it is discovered that it interferes with a large amount of apps, you want to complain "What were they thinking? Why did they include this so early? Why didn't they test it? Why didn't they ask the developers?, Blah, Blah, Blah.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot
