Even with public beta and everything the overall OS seems glitchy even on new machines.

Ive installed every public beta since release on my MacBook Air 2011 / 13" / 4GB RAM / i7 / 256GB HDD and all was fine up till Beta 3 but ever beta since then is laggy even with basic functions like About My Mac / System prefences - you see the box rolling down in a jaggy manner. I don't know what they changed but its no impressive. Every public beta since Beta 3 has this issue. I have also submitted feedback.

My mother still uses TIGER and her PowerMac Quicksilver 867. If not for power outages, the machine has never crashed for over a YEAR! HAHA!

That's because there is nothing to crash, LOL. Don't get me wrong, Tiger was my first system and i loved it, but it's SO obsolete now that i can't even begin to .........

I'm not sure what you mean. I've been using the public beta since it was released, and it runs smooth as butter on my Mac Pro. I've only logged eight bug reports so far, which for a beta OS is pretty good.

I really like the new interface. It's much cleaner and clearer. I like it a lot more than Mavericks.

#3 No sound on SOUND keys as in you can't tell how loud you're increasing the volume from the keys.

I actually like it that way. I can hear the sound ramp up and I don't need the "popping" sound in addition to whatever I'm listening to.

Have you tried clean install? Just for the sake of science. I'm still undecided about my mba 2012. I installed yosemite on my 2007 imac and it is laggy (animations, the system itself is fast) so i kinda don't know what to do. Clean install would be like 2-3 hours for me so not a biggy but still

I believe I shouldn't have to do a clean install and have never had since day one. Also this only started to occur after beta 3, so whats changed?

Dude, read what I said again. I'm saying that without a good leader like Serlet, it doesn't matter if Apple ships every 24 months or make it paid upgrades, it'd suck just as bad. If Serlet is in charge, he'll make 12 month cycle just as good as 24 cycles we're used from him during the Tiger>SL era.

Balls.

Part of getting a project right is having achievable targets.

12 months for a major OS release is not an achievable target, either on the mobile or desktop platform.

I like Federeghi. I think he's a good man, I just think that Apple's 12 month cycle is unrealistic.

iOS 8 and Yosemite show a lot of potential. However they both have rough edges. Not all of them will be smoothed out by the time that both iOS 9 and 10.11 come out. That's the problem.

Can we agree that an operating system is bound to behave differently depending on the hardware it’s running on and other differences on the software side of things? :)

Clean installs are sometimes beneficial when running beta code, or migrating from beta to release code.

Great, now I'll be able to "upgrade" to the new version which breaks even more stuff from Mavericks so I can regain access to my iCloud documents that I lost when I apparently said "yes" to a cryptic question during the ios upgrade to my ipad. Neat.

Looks like the performance is a bit better on the dual-core side (top score) -

Also - where are the bluetooth and volume icons? I'm so confused.

However, there is likely a margin of error so take this with a grain of salt.

Just thought it was worth posting!

If it still does what is needed for that person, it is not obsolete.

You can still get modern browsers compiled for it, iWork '09 will work on it. Older versions of PS will run happily on it. OK it's not up to date, but in some ways that's better for some. They get stability.

Look at the numbers still using Windows XP. Most of that user base are businesses. Why? It's a known thing for them. To use an Apple phrase... "It just works"

Hide things behind big iron firewall systems, and they're safe enough..

I refuse to run a clean install as I dont like and dont use time machine / time capsule as I prefer to back things up manually without the one button does all routine which frequently fails. As mentioned this only started after Beta 3. I don't trust Apple with their backup software. Simplicity adds more complexity in the background when things go wrong.

Additionally, this is not the release version so its a waiting game.

i still feeling the UI laggy compared with mavericks even in powerful machine. anyone else?

To me, it feels a little faster than Mavericks on my 2007 MBP, even when TimeMachine is backing up in the background.
Is yours a clean installation or upgrade on top of Mavericks?
In my case it was an upgrade on top, and my main and only issue had to do with TimeMachine, which I was able to fix, then PB2 cae along and it seemed to have fixed it.

DLed Yosemite beta yesterday... so far, so good. NOTION4 and PLAY work well at first look.

Does anyone remember this event 11 years ago on October 24, 2003? Waited in line to buy the boxed version of Panther!

First golden master has a weird glitch where my 2014 MBA 11" basically locks itself twice - I have to enter my password twice to get into the computer. It's like it layers two lock screens over top of each other.

If it's when you first turn on that partition / OS, it's due to switching. Otherwise idk what to tell ya.

I haven't had as many issues as some people. Right now the weirdest is periodic lag, which is ironic considering the system feels much more responsive and web pages seem to load much faster.

I wouldn't be surprised, given experience, that some of the problems people are encountering are due to any of issues with old settings (the result of years of updates) or corrupted caches (I recommend nuking user and system caches once in a while or when problems occur).

My weird bug is: My keyboard input preferences keep resetting to "US English" every other restart.

Then use something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

I don't like Time Machine either and find this a far better (and quicker) solution. It also allows you to boot your backup drive if all else fails! (I can tell you how useful that has been with my rMBP in for repairs at the Apple Store. I just plug the portable HD into an old Whitebook I have and I'm working with my settings and software!)

After testing Yosemite for over 2 months, here's what's DOA about it so far...

#1 First off and this is embarrassing for Apple, but the Feedback program while collecting data from your computer disables your ethernet internet! I've complained since day 1. They never fixed it. Reported since BETA 1.

#2 Plugging in any iPhone, at least since IOS 8 (or the latest 8), disables your bluetooth completely, meaning goodbye Magic Mouse, goodbye wireless keyboard. Seems to only happen when the iPhone is completely charged. But only solution is a re-boot or standby peripherals. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

#3 No clue as to whether this is related to #2, but constant warnings that Apple iPhone peripheral is not compatible with this phone. Doesn't matter if it's Apple's cable or not. iPhone is then not recognized and Image Capture program fails to work and charging stops. Tested with several iPhones, same result.

#3 No sound on SOUND keys as in you can't tell how loud you're increasing the volume from the keys. Also sound to send mail is so quiet, you'll never know if you sent the mail or not. Reported since BETA 1.

#4 Displays issues. No matter how many times you change it, Displays will not boot to the correct display you've set. For people with multiple displays, this means turning on another display or in my case having to switch to an HDTV to boot up and log in. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! And I've reported this since BETA 1 too.

#5 Some Mac OSX partitions are no longer compatible with disk repair software, so be careful. You'll get a warning that your disk mapping on a drive is no longer compatible.

#6 There is no indication as to when Spotlight is indexing. That's very annoying since normally you'd wait until indexing stops to use a Mac because of the slowdown.

#7 Preview loads for no apparent reason when an iPhone is connected. No clue why.

Yosemite is NOT READY FOR PRIMETIME in my opinion after 2 months of frustration. I feel like Apple owes me money. Oh, I should add, the installation corrupted my Mavericks installation too causing all Mail accounts there to be corrupted, but I can't say that's related to Yosemite except that it doesn't like other Mac OS X partitions. None of the above problems happened in Mavericks.

1) It's supposed to.
2) Not sure on this one.
3a) This has happened to me for years.
3b) This is the expected behavior, you can enable this in the Sound settings from System Preferences, the sound toggle is disabled by default in Yosemite.
4) Same problem here.
5) Haven't had this problem.
6) This is indeed annoying.
7) Haven't had this problem.

I gave up on this bug and started using 1Password, love it!!

Please could you quickly elobirate what bug with keychain you guys are talking about. Is that bug in Mavericks as well or only Yosemite. Thanks

----------

YES!!!! I would LOVE to go back to the Bertrand Serlet days where we got an OS update every other year. I'd also like if they'd go back to charging for the OS upgrades as well. I feel like giving the devs an extra year in general just works out better. Also if Apple can justify revenue off of the OS they might put more work into it.

Charging again for an OS,oh no you didn't....

The sleep button on my early-2012 27" iMac now functions correctly, meaning I can put the machine to sleep with a gentle push of the button. This had stop working a couple of Mavericks updates ago. I'd have to mash the button several times to get the computer to sleep.
