Balls.

Part of getting a project right is having achievable targets.

12 months for a major OS release is not an achievable target, either on the mobile or desktop platform.

I like Federeghi. I think he's a good man, I just think that Apple's 12 month cycle is unrealistic.

iOS 8 and Yosemite show a lot of potential. However they both have rough edges. Not all of them will be smoothed out by the time that both iOS 9 and 10.11 come out. That's the problem.

Not if you do less with each release. Smaller but more frequent updates are the way forward. Mammoth releases tend to create even more problems.

i skipped the DP betas and installed GM 1. Updated to GM 2 using App Store update. Every year my 2010 13" MBP seems to get faster and longer battery life with every new release of OS X.

Sound

#3 No sound on SOUND keys as in you can't tell how loud you're increasing the volume from the keys. Also sound to send mail is so quiet, you'll never know if you sent the mail or not. Reported since BETA 1.

Apart from the toggle in the settings which is suggested multiple times already, you can also try to hold shift while pushing your volume up/down keys. On previous versions of OS X, it would mute the sound, now they seem to have inverted this behavior (silent by default, plopping while holding shift) :)

I'm loving this new build, airdrop is just lightning fast, multiple images and no more need to accept them! It just sends them.

On the last build I had tons of issues with airdrop. Especially when my MacBook Pro was just on Ethernet.

Other issues I had seem to be gone too.

10.9 just works too but you know with a gazillion more features and improvements. I'm sure 10.10 will work just fine too, not sure why people sometimes have such a bad upgrade experience.

True. I have no problem whatsoever, using it on iMac 2013. Working perfectly along with iOS 8.1.:p

Snow Leopard was a small release.

Some under the hood stuff (OK this was big but they probably had been developing this from when Tiger was released)

But not much else, aside from stripping the PPC kernel and making this for Intel Macs only.

It was supposed to be "a better Leopard", yet the 10.6.0 release caused major data loss to those who had a guest account enabled and upgraded. It wiped out their user (non guest) accounts after they had logged out.

This was 22 months after Leopard.

12 months is just too short. Especially as you're splitting your time between desktop and mobile releases. 2 massive and important projects. All on one person to manage with an unrealistic and artificial deadline for both.

Split the projects and make them tick, tock on the release.

So for the "tick", it's a major release. New features, new APIs.

For the "tock", tweak the current release by adding a couple of small features, add stability and call it a major release. In reality it's a point release. This can be done quickly and will give more time to work on the next "tick" release.

This can be done on both OS X and iOS easily, allow them to stick to the 12 month cycle but still have some big feature releases, because effectively they will be spending, maybe 3-6 months on the "tock" release (it really is just a tweak), and the rest of the time on the "tick" release.

They can get away with that because both OS X and iOS are mature platforms now. The only other way around it is to have two teams per OS platform, who alternate between major releases.

Hey guys, quick question. I'm currently running PB3 on my Macbook Air and PB5 is not available. I opted to skip it because it seemed like it was causing battery issues for some folks. However, I'd like to move on to PB5, but it is not available in the app store. Am I going to need to install 4 and then move on to 5?

DLed Yosemite beta yesterday... so far, so good. NOTION4 and PLAY work well at first look.

Does anyone remember this event 11 years ago on October 24, 2003? Waited in line to buy the boxed version of Panther!

were they handing out these dog tags in line? those are pretty sweet!

Don't know if it's just me, but this latest release is definitely snappier then the other betas. The first RC was a noticeable difference from the prior betas, but this latest one has everything loading up much quicker (on a 2012 rMBP). It's absolutely ready for release.

First golden master has a weird glitch where my 2014 MBA 11" basically locks itself twice - I have to enter my password twice to get into the computer. It's like it layers two lock screens over top of each other.

My cMBP on Mavericks does that...do you have encryption turned on? If so that is why it does that I believe.

10.6.8 - fastest, most stable, most reliable OS Apple has released. Snow leopard is the mac version of Windows 7. :)

Fastest on a HDD, haha.

----------

Meanwhile, 10.6.8 just works.

Except if you need iCloud. Or iMessage. Or new yosemite features. And battery life of mavericks. Or memory compression etc etc etc
But yeah, it just works. If you need an internet browser :D

I believe I shouldn't have to do a clean install and have never had since day one. Also this only started to occur after beta 3, so whats changed?

You can believe in unicorns , too, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just trying to tell you that sometimes a clean install do wonders.

#1 First off and this is embarrassing for Apple, but the Feedback program while collecting data from your computer disables your ethernet internet! I've complained since day 1. They never fixed it. Reported since BETA 1.

#6 There is no indication as to when Spotlight is indexing. That's very annoying since normally you'd wait until indexing stops to use a Mac because of the slowdown.

[...]

Yosemite is NOT READY FOR PRIMETIME in my opinion after 2 months of frustration. I feel like Apple owes me money. [...]

With the exception of #6, which I do agree abut, I actually have none of these issues. And if you don't know how to enable sound-effects in OSX, I don't think you should be allowed to use the feedback-assistant and I doubt you're a serious developer.

I installed the first GM last week on my 2014 15" rMBP (w/NVIDIA GPU) and for the most part it's been pretty good. I can't run the OS X Server app for connecting to my Mavericks server box and Factorio stopped working, but otherwise most things seem okay. I do get the feeling things are a tad slower UI wise, but I would guess that by .1 or .2, things should be pretty good.

One thing that is pretty clear is that this OS is not just optimized for a retina display, it doesn't look very good on non retina displays. On Mavericks, the retina display always looked better, but I didn't feel like my non retina displays looked bad. Now they look bad to me. Very similar to how non retina iOS devices looked once iOS 7 came out.

I really hope they tweak the non retina displays some more over the next few updates. Unlike on the iOS side, it's not likely that everyone will be able to just switch to retina displays for everything anytime soon. The OS is going to have to support them for many years to come.

PB 5 on mid-2011 iMac here. Overall, this is almost stupidly better than any release of Mavericks for me. Tab view in Safari is no longer hiccuping, same with Notifications and volume toggle. Keychain is working fully again. The UI still feels fresh and clean, Dark Mode is still fantastic aside from some of the words in the menu bars getting slightly bigger when highlighted. No clue why regular classic mode would ever be needed again for me though I know I'll switch it on again sometime just because.

I do have an issue with a feature or two not working for me or maybe I haven't figured this out yet...can't get the text feature to work in Preview.....it just stays on rectangular selection...

From my experience, Mavericks was the BEST release since SL. Lion and ML were decent overall, but Lion slowed down my Mac tremendously, and ML didn't do much to improve on that. Mavericks made it run much longer, with improvements to battery life.

Of course, now I run a rMBP 2014, so it's a totally different experience. I'm very happy so far with Yosemite and battery life improved for me even though it's not a final release build.

Huh??? Yosemite looks gorgeous on retina. I installed it on my older non-retina and it looks TERRIBLE so I'm gonna leave it with Mavericks (it's a 2009 MBP).

Or did you have a typo there?
