Jesus, what a bunch of whiners! If the earbuds supplied with the new Shuffle don't suit your needs, then buy a freakin' Nano instead. It's not exactly a monstrously large device!

Also,

A) It will only be a short amount of time before someone (maybe even Apple) releases an adapter cord with proper controls to go between the newest Shuffle and any headphones you like.

B) The VAST majority of folks I see using iPods are using the original earbuds that came with the thing. Apple doesn't have to worry one whit about you bunch of whiners.

All this whining while the 2G iPod shuffle is still available.

Well, I would imagine quite a few of the 'whiners' like the new voiceover and playlist features. It's just that the new form factor prevents the new shuffle from being easily used in situations which the old shuffle performed admirably. It's just disappointing, that's all.

I think they're just whining because they can. Some of them may not be the target audience for an iPod shuffle yet they feel the need to complain.

There's a reason I wear the cable _under_ the shirt: hiking, yard work, painting, housework, riding a bicycle on a track ... that's when I use my iPod. And in all of these it's rather detrimental to the main activity to go and strangle yourself with a garrote.
.

I was worried too, but controls are just below the ear and above the shirt on on the right earphone wire.

Left-handed people can complain now though.

I think it looks great and the voiceover feature is nice, but I do question moving the controls to the earbuds. Hopefully they come out with a simple remote attachment to allow you to use any earbuds, like they used to make.

I don't see why they couldn't have put the exact same control setup on the iPod itself, however. Those three buttons could have fit right along the front of the shuffle and looked good and been very functional as well. At most it would have fattened it up slightly.

I'm considering mocking it up, though someone else could probably do a better job.

I think the point is you used to have the option to use any you wanted, now you cant and as for the nano its nearly twice as expensive as the shuffle (in the UK at least)

Hey Mark, if you don't like hearing "whiners" why are you even on these discussion boards? Why don't you stick to only apple.com's press releases?

Part of what makes a community better is when people voice their opinions on what they like and don't like about new products.

The only bad thing I can see with it is that you HAVE to use the Headphones Apple makes and sells with it.

Very nice design though!

Oh god, I really hate people who defend stupid, idiotic ideas just out of loyalty to a company....

I'm in the market for a new iPod as I'm about to start walking to work every day (3 mile round trip). I don't really want to use my iPod touch and my existing 2G shuffle is only 1Gb which ain't enough. I want an iPod as every MP3 I have is managed through iTunes and there's a little bit of paid-for content there as well. The nano is lovely but too expensive (especially in this economy). So this would be PERFECT for me.

Except that I can't use it. No, that's not a pointless complaint or whining for the sake of it, I physically can't use it as the Apple headphones won't stay in my ears. They're just not shapped right for me and the right one in particular will drop out even when sitting down. The only way I could use 'em walking is to apply duct tape over the top of 'em. This isn't just Apple earbuds by the way, it's all of 'em. The only way I can use in-ear headphones is if they're either the hook over the ear type, have a band of some sort or are the proper in-the-ear noise cancelling variety.

What's really frustrating is it would have been so simple to solve the problem - just put the controls on a cable which terminates in a headphone socket. Litteraly a break point just above the controler, that's all that would have been needed to make this a killer bit of kit. But for some stupid, idiotic reason they haven't done it and in the process will have lost a lot of sales.

You are just pitiful, someone please take this persons iPod away.

All these points have probably be already made, but i want to complain a bit too.

1) the controls are on the earbuds! this means that the machine is not useable with speakers and if the ear-buds break (which i find happens quite a bit with apple headphones you have to buy another set to use it and those are not cheap!)

2) the cable that comes with it is 45mm long!!! (WHY?!?!?!) you have to riddle with the back of an iMac or Mac mini to plug the iPod in because the lead isn't long enough to stretch round to the front and the ipod will be hanging a bit if you use an iMac!) another one at 1 metre is available for £15!!!!! extra though.

3) there is nothing on the front now. they could of at least put an apple of something on the front. it's just blank and boring.

4) the colours available were one of the nicest things about the old shuffle - i would like it to be in Blue again (to be fair, apple may bring colours very soon)

5) the voice over feature is the new iPod Nano 'shake to change song' function... a pointless gimmick - at least you can turn it off though.

6) the on-off and shuffle-order switches are now one thing and three click switches are never good for usability as they are often difficult to get into the middle, especially when new and stiff.

7) from the small picture it looks like the actual packaging for the new Shuffle is larger than the old one - lets hope it isn't. Apple keeps banging on about smaller packaging and i don't want to see them being accused of hypocrisy.

That will do - i know i am whinging and being picky but i don't think it is a very good design. Apple could have done better. But i'm sure those who do buy it will enjoy it. I still prefer my old shuffle better though

Way to be dismissive.

What about those of us with young children have been saving their allowance for months to get an iPod but the Apple earbuds are too large and uncomfortable for their 8 year olds? Now they have to get an adapter in order to use earbuds that fit or save for a few more months to get a nano that they do not need the capacity of.

I know it is not an essential purchase, but an 8 year old daughter saving $50 for this purchase was an accomplishment. Now she has to wait even longer, turning this into a possible negative lesson for her.

I have to believe that previous gen shuffles are available. Perhaps you should find one for her in advance and she can pay you when she's finished saving?

I think they're just whining because they can. Some of them may not be the target audience for an iPod shuffle yet they feel the need to complain.

I suppose that's the case with every new Apple product release, but I think there are some legitimate concerns arising from taking the interface off of the device. The previous shuffles were great for using in the car; just clip it onto your cassette adapter and go. The tactile interface (unlike a click wheel) can be handled without taking your eyes off the road.

btw, triple-click goes back a song.

I'm warming up to the new shuffle. I like the ability to switch playlists. I don't think the previous shuffle had that or did it?

I might have to return my refurb 2gb shuffle and get a new one. I haven't even opened the shipping box as it was delivered 30 minutes ago. Anyone want a refurb 2gb shuffle in still unopened shipping packaging?

Cool technology, but ugly form factor.

There's a lot of metal there begging to be engraved. Yet, I see you can only engrave on the clip.

What ugly form factor? There's no room on there for ugly; it's a 1.8 inch piece of anodized aluminum. I see how it'd be nice to have a button-less music player as it serves more as minimalist jewelry you can stick on your lapel, tie, etc. Really nice that it's just blank as it becomes neutral.

I LOVE IT AND AGREE! What kind of weird alien ears do you people have that the ear buds won't fit? And as far as quality goes, you will NEVER find a pair of $30 headphones that sound as good as Apple's.

And really? You pay $100+ for your headphones, but you buy a shuffle?

My nephews both have iPods. They use the standard Apple headphones without any issues. I guess it's because they are not OLD and stuck in their ways.

I think it's a pretty innovative product and THAT'S HOW WE GOT THE IPOD IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

If you really miss your controls on the device, Go Buy A Sony (Cassette) Walkman from E-Bay! Or How About a Cd Player that skips everytime you place a foot on the ground.

What did you people do before this stuff existed? Glossy Screens? I want my Matte Option....whine...whine....whine. Because those GLASS CRT's we used for 30 YEARS were Matte? NO THEY WERE GLOSSY, MADE OF GLASS!

Apple is not about choice. They don't want you to have a choice. They want you to use their products and theirs alone. And as long as the dictator continues to provide me with products that I LOVE, I am happy to stick with APPLE Products. Buy the $79 In-Ear if you want Better Headphones. They come with 3 different inserts to fit ALL of your Weird Ears!

I completely agree with this. I mean it stinks that IF the earphones break you have to get a new set of apple ones but Im sure the third parties will put out options as well.

I also dont get all these people complaining about the sound quality of th apple earbuds (which fit in my normal ears by the way ;). They sound decent..nowhere near an east German transistor radio. I also have a $20 pair of sony earphones as referenced earlier and the apple ones sound just as good. If you want cheap sounding ones buy a pair from the Dollar Tree and see how good the Apple ones sound.

Finally a nice bird presenting an apple product, Hanna, instead of all the luke warm losers they got on all the other products, remember the guy for the macbook....christ. I say redo all product vids with hanna!!!
