Yeah but the point of the shuffle is for those who need it for an active lifestyle. I wouldnt take a nano running with personally as i think its overkill for what i need. The shuffle is perfect for gym/running needs or at least the prev gen was. Maybe in time they will offer clip on ear phones with the in line control feature.
Everyone looking into buying anything from DealExtreme.com be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with your purchase. I was thinking of buying a Xbox 360 120gb hard drive from this site because of the great price. After looking into the product and examining the pictures on the site the model number, case, and warranty sticker(is covered), does not match that of a 120gb drive; Its a FAKE. The hard drives they are selling are Modded/Hacked 20gb hard drive cases that have been flashed with a 120gb drives ISO. I'm not saying everything they sell is a scam, I just wanted to put this out there as a warning.http://www.dealextreme.com/
They sell iPhone headphones with the in-line mic and button for $3.50. I mixed my Deal Extreme headphones up with my real Apple headphones, and no one I've been able to find can tell them apart.
Believe it or not, you can buy headphones somewhere other than the Apple Store.
It wouldn't surprise me if they start stocking these headphones at a similar price in the near future.
Cool technology, but ugly form factor.![]()
There's a lot of metal there begging to be engraved. Yet, I see you can only engrave on the clip.![]()
Oh god, I really hate people who defend stupid, idiotic ideas just out of loyalty to a company....
I'm in the market for a new iPod as I'm about to start walking to work every day (3 mile round trip). I don't really want to use my iPod touch and my existing 2G shuffle is only 1Gb which ain't enough. I want an iPod as every MP3 I have is managed through iTunes and there's a little bit of paid-for content there as well. The nano is lovely but too expensive (especially in this economy). So this would be PERFECT for me.
Except that I can't use it. No, that's not a pointless complaint or whining for the sake of it, I physically can't use it as the Apple headphones won't stay in my ears. They're just not shapped right for me and the right one in particular will drop out even when sitting down. The only way I could use 'em walking is to apply duct tape over the top of 'em. This isn't just Apple earbuds by the way, it's all of 'em. The only way I can use in-ear headphones is if they're either the hook over the ear type, have a band of some sort or are the proper in-the-ear noise cancelling variety.
What's really frustrating is it would have been so simple to solve the problem - just put the controls on a cable which terminates in a headphone socket. Litteraly a break point just above the controler, that's all that would have been needed to make this a killer bit of kit. But for some stupid, idiotic reason they haven't done it and in the process will have lost a lot of sales.
And you can't buy 3rd-party headphones with controls because...?
Well, you're the only one making this argument.
Everyone else is complaining because they specifically want high quality earphones. Go back and look, that's the problem everyone is having here. They WANT to buy an $80 player and then spend $40 - $100 on headphones!
Because it's the Shuffle that has the Nike+ iPod, right? WRONG. FAIL.
Have you seen the size of the Shuffle? What year are you living in? 2050? Voice Recognition Software in a product smaller than a AA Battery? Keep Dreaming (For now).

As for the new shuffle... Its nice to see Apple innovating again!
I'll give you that one. Its stupid to buy a low end player and use expensive headphones with it, however this limits where you can use this new player which I think is a valid point. If you have one of these and you are at your friends house and want to play music through their home stereo, its no longer a simple case of plugging it in using a headphone to RCA splitter which just about everyone has now. Now you either don't or you have to wait for a new type of splitter that has the integrated controls. Same with listening to music in your car through a tape adapter or FM modulator.
There's a reason I wear the cable _under_ the shirt: hiking, yard work, painting, housework, riding a bicycle on a track ... that's when I use my iPod. And in all of these it's rather detrimental to the main activity to go and strangle yourself with a garrote.
The howling you hear is because, apart from the crappy stock headphones, the shuffle and the nano were at the perfect spot right there were they were (and are, in case of the nano). Lightweight, flash-based, long battery life, ease of use. Those things are bought by the casual user, not the Apple fanboi or the gadget freak. Taking /away/ functionality is simply a dick move.
Or, more likely, they already HAVE nice headphones that fit and are comfortable and would like to be able to use 'em on all their devices.
I can see text reading coming to iPhone. I hope next iPhone will be aluminum as well.
Wow you make it sound like there's no other model of an iPod.
This thing is made for just a person running around listening to music. If you wanna hook an iPod up to a stereo get a different iPod.

So now I have to have two ipods, one for running, one for everything else? In that case, why spend $80 on the one only for running when there are plenty of cheap alternatives? Thats like saying I should own a Macbook and also Macbook Pro just in case I want to use firewire.

If you paid £100 for a pair of in-ear headphones why are you using a Shuffle?! I think some people have their priorities mixed up!
I'm really disappointed with this. I've been wanting a shuffle for the gym but waited because i remember rumors a few months ago about a smaller shuffle. I can't wear the supplied headphones. I can't even wear them sitting still. They pop out and they hurt. They should have kept the remote separate so you could use any headphones. I really wanted to get this too. This truly sucks. I'm tempted to get the "old" shuffle now but i like the design of the new one and the fact that you can make playlists.![]()
