I can see text reading coming to iPhone. I hope next iPhone will be aluminum as well.

Everyone else is complaining because they specifically want high quality earphones. Go back and look, that's the problem everyone is having here. They WANT to buy an $80 player and then spend $40 - $100 on headphones!

I'll give you that one. Its stupid to buy a low end player and use expensive headphones with it, however this limits where you can use this new player which I think is a valid point. If you have one of these and you are at your friends house and want to play music through their home stereo, its no longer a simple case of plugging it in using a headphone to RCA splitter which just about everyone has now. Now you either don't or you have to wait for a new type of splitter that has the integrated controls. Same with listening to music in your car through a tape adapter or FM modulator.

Yeah but the point of the shuffle is for those who need it for an active lifestyle. I wouldnt take a nano running with personally as i think its overkill for what i need. The shuffle is perfect for gym/running needs or at least the prev gen was. Maybe in time they will offer clip on ear phones with the in line control feature.

Because it's the Shuffle that has the Nike+ iPod, right? WRONG. FAIL.

Be very careful with this site!

http://www.dealextreme.com/

They sell iPhone headphones with the in-line mic and button for $3.50. I mixed my Deal Extreme headphones up with my real Apple headphones, and no one I've been able to find can tell them apart.

Believe it or not, you can buy headphones somewhere other than the Apple Store.

It wouldn't surprise me if they start stocking these headphones at a similar price in the near future.
Everyone looking into buying anything from DealExtreme.com be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with your purchase. I was thinking of buying a Xbox 360 120gb hard drive from this site because of the great price. After looking into the product and examining the pictures on the site the model number, case, and warranty sticker(is covered), does not match that of a 120gb drive; Its a FAKE. The hard drives they are selling are Modded/Hacked 20gb hard drive cases that have been flashed with a 120gb drives ISO. I'm not saying everything they sell is a scam, I just wanted to put this out there as a warning.

As for the new shuffle... Its nice to see Apple innovating again!

Hmmm...

Cool technology, but ugly form factor.

There's a lot of metal there begging to be engraved. Yet, I see you can only engrave on the clip.

I've thought about seeing if a friend that works in a shop with a laser etcher could engrave my Mac Book. I imagine it could be done. Also with the new unibody Mac Books, what about anodizing the case a different colour? That would be cool. Void the warranty but hey...

Oh god, I really hate people who defend stupid, idiotic ideas just out of loyalty to a company....

I'm in the market for a new iPod as I'm about to start walking to work every day (3 mile round trip). I don't really want to use my iPod touch and my existing 2G shuffle is only 1Gb which ain't enough. I want an iPod as every MP3 I have is managed through iTunes and there's a little bit of paid-for content there as well. The nano is lovely but too expensive (especially in this economy). So this would be PERFECT for me.

Except that I can't use it. No, that's not a pointless complaint or whining for the sake of it, I physically can't use it as the Apple headphones won't stay in my ears. They're just not shapped right for me and the right one in particular will drop out even when sitting down. The only way I could use 'em walking is to apply duct tape over the top of 'em. This isn't just Apple earbuds by the way, it's all of 'em. The only way I can use in-ear headphones is if they're either the hook over the ear type, have a band of some sort or are the proper in-the-ear noise cancelling variety.

What's really frustrating is it would have been so simple to solve the problem - just put the controls on a cable which terminates in a headphone socket. Litteraly a break point just above the controler, that's all that would have been needed to make this a killer bit of kit. But for some stupid, idiotic reason they haven't done it and in the process will have lost a lot of sales.

How many hours does it take you to talk 3 miles? Do you seriously ever hear the same song twice? Isn't 1GB close to 10-12 hours of music? How is that "ain't enough"?

Here's a tip: If you can't use the headphones included with the iPod shuffle, don't buy one. I know this is a remarkable revelation, but if you think about it long enough you might be able to wrap your brain around it. Apple doesn't have a team of engineers making sure every product they release suits YOUR needs, believe it or not.

Well, you're the only one making this argument.

Everyone else is complaining because they specifically want high quality earphones. Go back and look, that's the problem everyone is having here. They WANT to buy an $80 player and then spend $40 - $100 on headphones!

Or, more likely, they already HAVE nice headphones that fit and are comfortable and would like to be able to use 'em on all their devices.

Have you seen the size of the Shuffle? What year are you living in? 2050? Voice Recognition Software in a product smaller than a AA Battery? Keep Dreaming (For now).

Imagine what people would have said in 2001 at the original iPod release about something as small and capacious as the new shuffle, or even [any of the] iPod nanos.

Of course all their stuff is knock-offs, how do you think they sell it for pennies on the dollar? A lot of their accessories are identical to OEM accessories though, and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they rolled out of the same factory.

Wow you make it sound like there's no other model of an iPod.

This thing is made for just a person running around listening to music. If you wanna hook an iPod up to a stereo get a different iPod.

I appologize if this has been posted before in this thread, but a possible solution to the problem of only being able to use Apple headphones with the new shuffle is to replace the earbuds on the apple cord with earbuds of your choosing. It isn't an extremely difficult process, but some may have trouble with it. I just wanted to throw the idea out there for those interested in the new shuffle, but put off by the uncomfortable earbuds. I can say this solution does work as I did it with my iPhone earbuds before companies came out with earbuds that had similar controls on them. Below is a link to a YouTube video that describes the process. I hope this helps some people :)

There's a reason I wear the cable _under_ the shirt: hiking, yard work, painting, housework, riding a bicycle on a track ... that's when I use my iPod. And in all of these it's rather detrimental to the main activity to go and strangle yourself with a garrote.

The howling you hear is because, apart from the crappy stock headphones, the shuffle and the nano were at the perfect spot right there were they were (and are, in case of the nano). Lightweight, flash-based, long battery life, ease of use. Those things are bought by the casual user, not the Apple fanboi or the gadget freak. Taking /away/ functionality is simply a dick move.

OH GOD WATCH THE VIDEO!!! Even if you put it under your shirt, you will still be able to click the friggin buttons.

If the next iPod up was the Touch, I'd understand. But the Nano exists so I don't see the problem.

You can buy 3rd party headphones.
You can buy a Nano.
You can still buy the old shuffle.

How many options do people need?

So, in my opinion...i think the whole headphone thing isn't too big of a deal...
I find it more amusing that it is so small...can't wait to hear the horror stories of someone putting it in their pocket and it goes through the wash...don't laugh lol, wallets go through the wash all the time......:D

This comment was just posted on Gizmodo:

I was thinking about something the other day and now i know for a fact it's going to happen. Should have patented it.

The iPhone should be able to read the name of the person calling you if you are wearing headphones. I hate when im out listening to music, someone calls and i have to get it out of my pocket to see who is calling even though i could just pick up with the remote with the phone still in my pocket.

Its not even a privacy thing, but only that i like to know who im talking to before i pick up, so i can set the tone right (or speak the right language).

With this voiceover they could easily do it for the contacts on your iphone, or even read the numbers to you (less practical) if you do not have that number stored.

Coming to an iPhone near you very soon im sure. Remember, you heard it from me first!

I know that Sprint/Nextel phones already do this. Apple could easily implement this (with an option to turn it off, of course).

So now I have to have two ipods, one for running, one for everything else? In that case, why spend $80 on the one only for running when there are plenty of cheap alternatives? Thats like saying I should own a Macbook and also Macbook Pro just in case I want to use firewire.

The reason I don't like this is I don't think the benefits of having the controls ONLY on the headphones outweighs the downside of being limited in other output devices.

That's life. If they never ever changed the Shuffle people would complain it hadn't been updated. If they updated it with minor changes people would complain.

The new feature this time IS the new earphones.

If you don't like it, get a Nano.

Well, yes.

Cheapo ipod for running. Fancy iPod Touch / Classic for everything else.

There's no way I would take my Touch out running anyway. Too big and I'd hate to drop it.

The new Shuffle is better for exercising anyway - the controls are easier to get to now.

If you paid £100 for a pair of in-ear headphones why are you using a Shuffle?! I think some people have their priorities mixed up!

So just because you appreciate sound quality enough to spend good money on headphones, it means you wont want to purchase a shuffle? Nonsense!

Some people will want a small, low cost and/or no thrills player without all the bells and whistles (and cost) of the iPod touch ... so its not good business sense to deprive the market of a viable solution just because you can (i.e. theres no reason why buttons couldnt have been included other than Apples arogance for the user!)

I assume most buyers will already own an iPod and logic therefore dictates they'll be using their own headphones. I'd like one of these even though I already own an iPod and an iPhone (because each suits a different occasion) - but Im buggered if Im gonna be tied in so drastically! At least they could tie us in with decent headphones!

IMO, Anyone who listens to music enough to buy an iPod (or any other MP3 player) surely cares about sound quality? If not, why would they look to purchase an Apple product. Apple are obviously trying to hit Skoda market with something dressed like a Ferrari and priced like a Space Shuttle (no pun intended!)

Apple are no longer innovators, more dictators LOL!

I'm really disappointed with this. I've been wanting a shuffle for the gym but waited because i remember rumors a few months ago about a smaller shuffle. I can't wear the supplied headphones. I can't even wear them sitting still. They pop out and they hurt. They should have kept the remote separate so you could use any headphones. I really wanted to get this too. This truly sucks. I'm tempted to get the "old" shuffle now but i like the design of the new one and the fact that you can make playlists. :(

You might want to have your ears checked, that's definitely not normal.

You would have if you owned the 1G iPod shuffle - the audio chip on it was the best that Apple ever used. Has the best sound.
