Do you mean the earphones or in ear buds? The type i meant was like ear plugs that sit in your eat and dont fall out easy?

Oh, I was thinking about the earphones. It would be nice to have the ear buds as an alternative option. Apple would have to charge more for it though.

iPod in-Ear

At that size, why don't they just put the guts in the ear buds themselves and a single wire looped between the two.

Not a bad idea. Imagine the Apple Bluetooth Headset, which is almost the size of the new shuffle, with a tiny wire to connect it to the other side...

That would be nice... ;)

Uh, did you ever stop to think that maybe most of the people who buy iPods just use the included headphones? I mean, the white headphone cord is a god damn fashion statement these days. Who outside of MacRumors weirdos buys an $80 MP3 player then spends another $40 on headphones?

io_burn, I've read your posts throughout this thread and I don't think you get it either. People don't buy a $80 player and spend another $40 on headphones. They buy an $80 player and buy $5 headphones / earbuds because the original ones break or they just don't like them. See my prior post. I see 5000 college students a day at work and many of them use third party earphones.

Try working out with the included headphones... I got the $29 Apple brand WHITE in ear headphones and even inside a tanning booth, u don't hear any surrounding sound... Unfortunately if i buy the new shuffle I won't be able to use them...

Well, you're the only one making this argument.

Everyone else is complaining because they specifically want high quality earphones. Go back and look, that's the problem everyone is having here. They WANT to buy an $80 player and then spend $40 - $100 on headphones!

I'm really disappointed with this. I've been wanting a shuffle for the gym but waited because i remember rumors a few months ago about a smaller shuffle. I can't wear the supplied headphones. I can't even wear them sitting still. They pop out and they hurt. They should have kept the remote separate so you could use any headphones. I really wanted to get this too. This truly sucks. I'm tempted to get the "old" shuffle now but i like the design of the new one and the fact that you can make playlists. :(

Haha great idea!! Bluetooth shuffle that clips on your ear and with a built in speaker and mic so you could use it with an iphone

i cant seem to see how the control works on the apple site. only the guide video. so how do you go back one song??

I don't really get all the disdain for those who are criticizing this product. Some of us like Apple products because they generally provide better-than-average interfaces and integration for the things we do in our daily lives (e.g. use computers, listen to music). It's apparent that the new shuffle doesn't meet those standards for a lot of people.

I just now realized I won't be able to use my great :apple: in-ear's...
Instead of silver and black, they should have a headphone option.
Those standard :apple: headphones are the worst... They don't stay in your ears while walking, running, biking and they don't isolate the surrounding sound.
I already have a 1G Shuffle but I actually bought a Nano for the treadmill and my bike just because it has playlists...
Good move on the size and features but again :apple: is forcing us to only ONE choice... Pisses me off...

Once again, lets look at the bottom the page. I'm fairly sure these are In-Ear and I'm positive it says they are compatible. That makes for at least TWO choices.

Sadly the people saying this will sell are probably right. Here's the problem; even the apologists are saying people will buy it because they're willing to use junk.

Think about that, even the apologists are saying Apple has released junk. :p

Everyone else is complaining because they specifically want high quality earphones.

Maybe they define high quality as "does not cause physical pain to use" or "does not require your head to remain motionless".

Here's an idea then: Don't buy the new Shuffle if you want to use your existing in-ear headphones. Simple.

Then why not just make a bracket that the bluetooth headset connects to that has another ear bud on the other side? Case solved, and allows for stereo iphone communications too... I've wondered why there are four pads on the end of the earpiece...

The bracket would go behind the head...

Wake up and smell the coffee you complainers. It's an ipod SHUFFLE - it's not the top of the line beast meant for connecting and controlling and customizing etc.

If you don't like the shuffle and want other earbuds/headphones, do one or more of the following:

1: Buy the old one. It's still just as good as it was yesterday.
2: Buy a nano (it's actually really small, and even has a screen)
3: Buy something from another manufacturer og an other ipod
4: Just shut up and accept the realities.

Apple has ADDED another item to their list of ipods. If you don't want it, it doesn't affect you AT ALL. I know they will be discontinuing the old shuffle in the future, but now you know, and you can buy one during the next weeks/months if you prefer that one. It's not like the mac pro where the old one was ripped away without warning.

Oh god, I really hate people who defend stupid, idiotic ideas just out of loyalty to a company....

I'm in the market for a new iPod as I'm about to start walking to work every day (3 mile round trip). I don't really want to use my iPod touch and my existing 2G shuffle is only 1Gb which ain't enough. I want an iPod as every MP3 I have is managed through iTunes and there's a little bit of paid-for content there as well. The nano is lovely but too expensive (especially in this economy). So this would be PERFECT for me.

Except that I can't use it. No, that's not a pointless complaint or whining for the sake of it, I physically can't use it as the Apple headphones won't stay in my ears. They're just not shapped right for me and the right one in particular will drop out even when sitting down. The only way I could use 'em walking is to apply duct tape over the top of 'em. This isn't just Apple earbuds by the way, it's all of 'em. The only way I can use in-ear headphones is if they're either the hook over the ear type, have a band of some sort or are the proper in-the-ear noise cancelling variety.

What's really frustrating is it would have been so simple to solve the problem - just put the controls on a cable which terminates in a headphone socket. Litteraly a break point just above the controler, that's all that would have been needed to make this a killer bit of kit. But for some stupid, idiotic reason they haven't done it and in the process will have lost a lot of sales.

The VoiceOver feature isn't that magical after all. While you sync the ipod shuffle with itunes the song titles/artists are generated on your PC or Mac (note the difference in the voices!) and then copied to the device. That's lame!

I've spent the winter working on a respectable 5K time at the gym and never had a problem with the included iPhone headphones.

I don't see how you apologists can sit here and say that its ok to put a proprietary set of headphones on the entry level music player. If anything it should be the exact opposite, basic and cheap for the entry level and advanced head phones with additional controls on the high end units.

You know, it's a shame Apple has not hired you to head up their iPod Division. They've just done terribly lately. What was it again? Over 22 Million last Quarter?

Cool technology, but ugly form factor.

There's a lot of metal there begging to be engraved. Yet, I see you can only engrave on the clip.

Ditto for iMac buyers - reduced specification at higher prices!

Glad I've got my iPhone ... I bet the next incarnation will come out with a black and white screen, 10 year contract and a £100 price increase!!!

I'm pretty positive those are the fatest iMac's ever. I'm pretty sure that they replaced one of the 20" models with a 24" model. Reduced you say?

Same here, even just walking normal earphones dont like my ears at all. If i dont tilt my head i can make them stay in for about 30 seconds lol. Before i discovered in ear buds the way i got round this was by wearing a hat and pulling it down real low :p

Voice-recognition requires a lot CPU-power. It's not satisfactory even on proper computers with multi-gigaherz multicore-CPU's. how could it work on a portable mp3-player?

Oh really? My old KRZR could recognize the contact I wanted to call with no formal training or hesitation at all.
