You really think that the majority of iPod users use the ****** apple headphones™. If that's true then.... wow... just wow.... What I guess I'm trying to say is that ........ WOW!!! how the hell can people stand those things.... I mean I don't have the greatest ears but those just sound like complete garbage to me... and I don't know a single person with an iPod that uses them.

Count me in for listening to music on garbage then :D

many of you need to stop complaining that the shuffle does not offer too many features, would not play on external speakers, and non third party headphones.

The shuffle was never meant to achieve any of that. Sure the headphones costs almost as much as the shuffle, but thats besides the point.

if you want features than go buy a nano

Nice, the whole new "upselling" Apple is into...

If you don't like the power of the Mini, buy an iMac.
If you want FW in the Aluminum MacBook, buy a MacBook Pro.
If you want an expandable computer, buy a Mac Pro.

LOL...

I'll echo what has already been said. As a jogger/gym rat/hiker this update isn't what I was looking for. I use a set of headphones which wrap around my ears. The most comfortable setup is to clip the Shuffle to the pocket of my shorts - at 6'3, this is nearly impossible with the standard earbuds. They are too short, and that constant tug between my ears and my shorts is too annoying to tolerate. The fact that I like to connect the Shuffle to my car stereo occasionally also alienates me from this update. That said, I'm still happy with my two 1gb 2nd gen Shuffles, so it's not a huge deal.

Geeze. I like the new design. I would like to have the option of using my headphones however I think this will fill the void I have with riding my bike long distances and having to look and touch my iphone just to change songs. I will be picking up two of these. No need to cry and whine about it now, don't think Apple will change the model after reading all these posts.:)

I think apple could take away all the storage and offer a silver gum sized packet that does nothing and some fanatics would still be drooling over it.

I would have liked better control buttons. It seems like the voice could get annoying too.

I think I'll stick with an iPod that actually has a screen though.

How about a waterproof iPod for swimming. That would be nice.

This is soo dumb -- how do you iPhone people just deal with stuff like this? That would frustrate me on the first song I wanted to "rewind."

Well, the iPhone and iPod touch also have screen controls, so it isn't as important.

I am starting to think I'm the only one that likes this new Shuffle. I would have gotten one, but saw that the 1GB version of the old one is on clearance for $29. At that price I'm getting backup earbuds for my touch (even though I use 3rd party headphones at work/home, I do still use the Apple ones when out anywhere else since the jack on my other headphones are rather large) and getting a Shuffle for free.

For a Sec

I thought Apple had decided to include a small mic like most other music players and allow you to record your voice!
But then I read what the voiceover feature really was.....like oooh...you need to know what song you're ABOUT to listen to? LOL save you what about 5 secs? :D

Ta-Da

A little thing I whipped up in 5 mins in Preview.

Would the Touch screen/Track Pad type control be any better?

:)

very nice, shame about the controls

I think it looks great. Unfortunately I'm one of the many who don't like Apple headphones and prefer to use others. I guess I won't be getting a replacement (that would weigh far less than my headphones) for my 4th generation ipod , :)

One Step Forward, Two Steps Backward

Damn, why is every product apple come out with lately so craptastic?

New shuffle - smaller, more storage, voiceover - one step forward.
Controls removed from body - two steps backward

Macbook: Unibody construction, better graphics - one step forward
Remove Firewire - two steps backward

24" ACD:LED backlighting, Display Port - one step forward
No DVI, crazy price, glossy only - two steps backward

It's just so frustrating and sad to see...

It'll be interesting to see if aftermarket headphones will be able to at least Play/Pause songs...

Will my Apple In-ear Phones work? I will go to Apple Store to test today.

The shuffle needed a redesign and this one does seem like it will sell better. The only thing is the idiots at Apple decided to put the controls on the earphone cord. The Apple Earphones only have a lifespan of about 6 months for me, maybe less. In order for me to want to buy this product the lifespan would have to be pushed up to at least 1 year and have a lifetime warranty.

And so "Do not eat" becomes "Do not insert in nose." Technology marches forward.

I think that $79 is a bit high for a shuffle, especially when you can find a refurb nano with the same storage for a similar price. I like the fact that you can change the song with the headphones, but I agree that they should have kept buttons on the shuffle itself so you can use non-apple headphones as well and still have control.

On the other hand, who buys a shuffle that they really need to use high quality headphones? If I am jogging or biking, I don't use my isolating headphones because I can't hear stuff around me. When I go on a trip, I'm not going to use my shuffle because I can't select songs.

Also, how many people will actually fill their shuffle up with 1000 songs? Not having a screen with 4 GB of storage makes it impossible to find a specific song or artist.

I'm not sure why you're laughing. Your summary sounds pretty accurate to me. Like any range of products, if a product doesn't suit you then you look at the next best one until you find one that meet your needs. If it doesn't meet your needs you look elsewhere.

1. one click is pausing the songs
2. previous song you click three times in a row
3. No fast forward, but thats the point of a shuffle cheap small does not do much. if you want more features upgrade to nano.
4. you won't look like a nervous teenager stop being so insecure. I use the earphone controls all the time on my iphone they work great. It literally takes you 2 seconds to do a command.
5. you figured it out
6. shuffle you playlists duhhhh so you dont have to listen to eerything
7. more songs more playlist more shuffling
:apple::apple::apple:

1. + 2.: That was my point. It's still one or two clicks too much.
3: This is a basic feature which in my opinion is absolutely necessary for any kind of player. Especially fast backward.
4: I'm not a teenager anymore since almost a decade, thats the whole point. It just looks weird. And the 2 seconds are 1.8 seconds too much, when I could hold the device in my pocket in my hand.
6. The importance of playlists is waaaay behind the one of moving fast back and forth. IMO playlists simply don't belong to a shuffle.
7. How many favourites do you listen to? I don't even listen to all 200 songs currently stored on my iPod, most of them I skip.

I know, it's not worth it to start a war. And it's just my opinion. So I be quiet now.

@Benguitar: Nice, just make the controls on the device real buttons, not touchy things
