Guys, I have an iPod Touch 2gen 8Gb and I wanna buy the new Shuffle.
Their website hypnotized me!

This product shows the best and worst of Apple.

ANYONE can design a minimalist product like this if you remove all the features!!!

I love how you now can't use any other headphones that don't have a controller on them.

Not far off the iPod flee spoof now :p
I agree. And it's a terrible idea. I have some expensive, high-quality headphones that I use with my iPhone and other iPod models via an adapter. The adapter can fast forward, rewind, pause, play, etc, but it can't change the volume. So, unless I use Apple's terrible earbuds, I'm stuck at the default volume level.

I can't even BEGIN to understand why the chronic whiners would vote negative for this...this Shuffle is simply amazing, and the best news yet:

IT SUPPORTS APPLE LOSSLESS!!!

PC-fanboys, now just move over...this Shuffle is the BEST in its class.
Wake me when the iPod supports superior codecs.

Oh god, not what I wanted from a new shuffle at all.

My shuffle is the absolute perfect in-car iPod. I have it hanging from the cord of the cassette adaptor, and I can easily reach over to it to skip songs, change volume, etc.

This cannot replace my current shuffle. Will be buying another second gen shuffle immediately.

They messed up on this one. I hope some third party earbuds come out. The regular earbuds are too large for my wife's ears and I don't like how they handle bass plus being uncomfortable.

Didn't some website slam apple for "discriminating" against the visually impaired because there was no way to change text size, or audible menus on their ipods?
I hear thats the reason they incorporated the "speak menus" feature into the 4G Nano, and now the Shuffle.

Prone to hyperbole much?

I think perhaps the Lisa was a bigger mistake. Just a hunch.

My bet is on the Pippin! ;)

Nice, the whole new "upselling" Apple is into...

If you don't like the power of the Mini, buy an iMac.
If you want FW in the Aluminum MacBook, buy a MacBook Pro.
If you want an expandable computer, buy a Mac Pro.

LOL...

When hasn't Apple, or any company, done this?

Cute but Apple's earbuds are murder to my ears.

I know! They both sound horrible and are physically painful. The In-ear headphones are decent, though. Too bad they don't bundle those with iPods. They really should.

I thought Apple had decided to include a small mic like most other music players and allow you to record your voice!
But then I read what the voiceover feature really was.....like oooh...you need to know what song you're ABOUT to listen to? LOL save you what about 5 secs? :D

VoiceOver also allows you to choose playlists (since otherwise there would be no indication of what playlist you're on).

Damn, why is every product apple come out with lately so craptastic?

New shuffle - smaller, more storage, voiceover - one step forward.
Controls removed from body - two steps backward

Macbook: Unibody construction, better graphics - one step forward
Remove Firewire - two steps backward

24" ACD:LED backlighting, Display Port - one step forward
No DVI, crazy price, glossy only - two steps backward

It's just so frustrating and sad to see...

Apple has always made radical changes like this, dropping features in newer products. I could go on and on, but they dropped VGA, then S-Video, then DVI. They dropped SCSI interfaces. They dropped floppy drives. They dropped the removable drives from PowerBook G3s on the TiBooks. They dropped FW compatibility on iPods. Etc. I'm sure there will people who were all pissed when those changes happened, too. Change happens, I guess, and people just get used to it. Although I'll be honest, some of these more recent changes do seem a bit radical... =/

You sir are unfit to comment on my parenting. Keep the personal attacks out of this and raise your own children the way you want to raise them. Your comments are completely uncalled for and uninformed.

For an 8 year old to save $50 is a big deal. Not teaching her to shop around is a little much to ask for at that age - isn't it? I wanted her to have a goal to shoot as an incentive to save and now that target has moved.

In the meantime, I will continue to teach my children lessons in saving and patience while you teach your children what you want to.

I completely agree with your sentiments regarding teaching your child.

But the answer seems pretty clear- buy the older model Shuffle, problem solved. Or even better, buy a refurbished Nano or something like that.

The target never actually moved, that target still exists. Apple introduced a new product which is their perogative, and it is your perogative whether or not to buy it.

Why buy another one at all if you've already got one that does the job that you're after perfectly ?

"Oh no, I have to use earbuds with a speaker to give vocal commands? Why can't I use my nice headphones?"
Buy the regular shuffle.

Good god, people. This isn't hard.

Actually, you need special shuffle-only Apple earbuds in order to USE the shuffle. The PLAY BUTTON is located on the proprietary buds, NOT the unit. Therefore, the complaint is not being able to use anything other than the included earbuds--which, knowing apple, will probably cost $40-50 to replace.

THERE ARE ALREADY 3RD PARTY HEADPHONES AVAILABLE. Plus the In-Ear that Apple Sales. It is clear that eventually ALL iPods will be able to use these features.

It's not ridiculous at all. It's Innovative and Different. If you want a copy cat clone, GO BUY A ZUNE. Thank God Apple doesn't listen to you.

REALLY?!?!?! SWEET!

So I get to buy a new mp3 player AND new headphones EVEN THOUGH I ALREADY OWN 20 SETS THAT WORK ON EVERY SINGLE DEVICE IN MY HOUSE!

Apple could care less. In the big picture, not only are headphones cheap replacement products, but sub $100 music players are too. People are making a big deal out of an impulse buy type device. And if $79 is a lot for you (it is for me too), then you should be buying these things on EBay anyway (like I do.)

No one beat their system, there will be cheap controller adapters for $2 on EBay soon. And they're still selling the old Shuffle anyway.

This is just another way to force people to pay "The Apple Tax" when they have to replace their proprietary earbuds. They sell you the shuffle for cheap but lock you into a product-lifetime "service contract" cycle of buying their overpriced, overcomplicated earphones.

I guess Apple's mad at me that I "beat the system" by using their 1st-gen Shuffle REFURB (the chewing gum one) with the perfect pair of $5 earbuds (Phillips hs-310 that I bought a dozen pairs for $5 each when they discontinued.)

In a way this is good for me, because the flaw in their plan is easy to see. It should drive up the resale of my 1st gen shuffle, if I choose to sell. To Apple's credit, the unit seems like it will last forever. I will keep feeding it $5 earphones. Hey, I am a cheap b@stard :)

or you can buy the adapter that will come out soon

non-Apple headphones will require a special dongle that includes the new three-button controller, and Apple says it's working with third parties to bring other compatible 'phones to market.

Is it too much to ask for me to be allowed to use expensive earbuds and noise-canceling headphones I already own?!?! WHY MUST I PURCHASE ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO USE THIS THING.

And for all those about to scream "then don't buy it" -- guess what? You don't have to yell - THEY'VE ALREADY LOST MY SALE.

This is seriously the stupidest thing they've pulled yet.
