£60 quid? You're having a laugh!

They can stick the Shuffle up their arse. I'm sick of Apple's inflated UK prices.

FLAC is better than Apple Lossless, and thus I think the iPod line should support it.

"Better" than Apple Lossless in what way(s)? You didn't really qualify that statement, just presented a subjective point of view.

How do you plug this into the aux jack on a car radio and control it since the controls are on the headset?

Actually, the prices have dropped on shuffles in the UK. Here's a quote from the Apple PR release on the original iPod shuffle introduction.

iPod shuffle is the most affordable iPod ever and is available in two models: 512MB holding up to 120 songs for just £69 (inc VAT) and 1GB holding up to 240 songs for just £99 (inc VAT).

With the adapter they will release soon according to Gizmodo

Dear Apple,
I just purchased one of your top-of-the line products.
Please tell me why it won't plug into any of my existing accessories without the use of your overpriced proprietary adapters?

No good design

On the previous model : put the iPod shuffel, aka the controller anywhere you like.
On the new model : the controller is always dangling some inches under your chin. Not accessible if you're wearing a coat.

You "triple-click" on the middle button. Single click = play/pause, double = next, triple = previous.

And how would you shuttle through a song? In the older versions you could just hold the previous / next buttons down and the track would shuttle - perfect for back tracking a missed word or sentence in spoken word audio and stuff...

It's different, and doesn't conveniently fit in to some people's tiny little worlds.

Specifically:
- The controls are on the headphone wire, so you can't just use any headphones with it
- The controls are very minimal
- It uses voice synthesis to tell you what song/playlist you're hearing/choosing
- It is unconventional in several ways

Which ignores the facts:
- Other compatible headphones are available, adapters will soon be available, and if you want to use really good headphones you probably don't want a Shuffle
- Single/double/triple-clicking the few buttons does what you want, and you're smart enough to figure it out
- The prior Shuffles had no display nor voice
- Apple frequently introduces unconventional products

Basically it's a whine-fest, piling on a new product that's being innovative and cutting the anchors of backward compatability. If you don't like the new Shuffle, the 2nd Gen model is still available, and if you're that whiny you probably don't really want a Shuffle at all. Some of us DO want this new model.

Exemplary Post.

Actually, you need special shuffle-only Apple earbuds in order to USE the shuffle. The PLAY BUTTON is located on the proprietary buds, NOT the unit. Therefore, the complaint is not being able to use anything other than the included earbuds--which, knowing apple, will probably cost $40-50 to replace.

Replacement cost = $30

Not Proprietary

We'll also put you in the "didn't read any of the dozens of posts that already noted you can use an adapter with your existing headphones" camp.

So I guess that'd squeeze you into the "doesn't realize an adapter like that doesn't exist" camp. Or maybe the "when Apple bothers to make an adapter, it's going to cost $20 for no reason" camp.

Thanks for playing!

has the engadget article been mentioned that thrrid party headphones will be useable with a dongle!

that should shut up most of the moaners!

If you think that then you have never been on this site before. I'd wager MOST of the readers here switch to different earbuds almost immediately so they instantly cry out and say its the stupidest thing apple has done.

Take a step back and think though, I'd wager that the majority of ipod buyers use the stock earbuds anyway, I know i see ALOT of the white ones everywhere. This is most likely a case of apple doing what apple does, cater the the majority of their customers instead of the minority.

apple is really making a (new) name for themselves as of late.

not only is the new shuffle $10 more than the previous version, but now customers are locked in to use those terrible white ear buds.

but at least it's smaller! because the last one was SO HUGE it gave me a hernia carrying it

You probably can't... if that's a big deal to you, there might be a controller (now or eventually) that allows you to do that.

Did'nt read through all the posts. My opinion:

Bad. Really, really bad.

But the old models are still there. Either my current model holds for another two-and-a-half years or I'll have to buy one of those.

1. double-click for next song -> one click too much.
2. previous song? repeat current song?
3. Fast forward, fast backward?
4. Controls at the earphones: I don't want to look like a nervous teenager looking like touching himself near the face squeezing pimples just to adjust the volume. And how scrambled up can these earphones get when you pull them out of your pocket? What is the most exhausted part of my current iPod: The cable of the earphone, so always touching it makes it even more filthy and maybe they even break faster. For me too, Apple earphones pop out of my ears too, so how am I supposed to simply change a song or the volume without constantly readjusting the earphones?
5. Voice-over: So everybody who does not listens to english songs does what with that feature?
6. Playlists: For what? What was the purpose of the Shuffle again?
7. 4 GB: Way too much. Go back to 1 GB and create the flea. It would have been a funny collector piece.

EDIT: Oh, just saw now, that there are voices in different languages. Maybe they should provide those languages for Leopard too.

thanks for saving me $80

I love how you now can't use any other headphones that don't have a controller on them.

Not far off the iPod flee spoof now :p

First and last thing that came to my mind. Considering how often I replaced my headphones, at $79 $29 for replacement headphones makes it not as worthy.

But good for bragging rights or something. :)

Sweet!!!!

This new iPod Shuffle is great. I checked out all the tech specs of it online and actually got to use it in my local Apple Store. I ended up buying two: one silver, one black for my two daughters. I think they'll love it because of it's innovative ideas backing it. What stands out most is the "VoiceOver" function. Over all I'd give this product a full 5 stars!!!:):apple::)

I bet you the overwhelming majority of ipod (any type) users go with the stock earbuds.

Why buy new ones when you get a free pair?

Of course, a lot of people get upgrades (i use third party ones as well) but most people don't bother. So apple probably isn't too worried about the audiophiles that use other earbuds with the shuffle. (Hell, even I use the regular apple ones with my shuffle.) That being said, the shuffle is not really an audiophile's product is it? It's just music on the go.

I dunno, I could be wrong here, but I'm sure they have done some market research that doesn't just involve reading posts on macrumors.

Just bought a blue shuffle in December but that is going on ebay tonight and i will buy the new one this weekend!
