Way to be dismissive.

What about those of us with young children have been saving their allowance for months to get an iPod but the Apple earbuds are too large and uncomfortable for their 8 year olds? Now they have to get an adapter in order to use earbuds that fit or save for a few more months to get a nano that they do not need the capacity of.

I know it is not an essential purchase, but an 8 year old daughter saving $50 for this purchase was an accomplishment. Now she has to wait even longer, turning this into a possible negative lesson for her.

You could still purchase the previous iPod Shuffle: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_shuffle_2gen?mco=MTYzNDU2Mg

and does the voice over even work with tracktitels and artists in other languages, say, dutch, or german or something like that?

answer your question?

Naw, with the i-phone I really don't need a separate music player. If they came up with a really big like 240 gig classic, it'd be kinda tempting, but I have no use for a shuffle.

usb charging via headphone jack, that is an interesting development, imagine if that became ubiquitous :apple:
has any other device ever had this ? is it patented by apple ?

The last shuffle had it I think, except that it was part of the dock.

Not far off the iPod flee spoof now :p

my first thoughts exactly. really can't see this as a particularly good idea:

can't use my own headphones
voice-over would become annoying
twice the price
no way to rewind?

i just hope that the 2nd gen stays for sale, as it has been one of the best switching devices amongst my friends that i have seen in years

Uh, yes. The 1G and 2G iPod Shuffle both use the headphone jack to charge and sync.

All the people saying that "oh so now i can't use my high end headphones.."

i think the point of the iPod shuffle is that it's cheap, or for working out.

i don't think the point is to use your $300 high end headphones when your working out, get them all sweaty and yum!

if you want to use your $300 headphones, then get a $300 iPod and stop complaining! + the apple in ear headphones work, and their pretty decent.

just my thoughts :apple:

For working out, people have special earphones that work with their ear shape and will not fall off easily. I happen to have the Sony rubber loop-hanger type and am very happy with the fit. Some of the over-the-ear models don't stay on that well, but these do (for me...for someone else, another brand might be better). This issue is completely separate from the issue of sound quality.

no way to rewind?

If it works the same as the current Apple In Ear Headphones with the 4G Nano and the 2G iPod Touch, you double click to skip tracks, triple click to back up a track.

Technically there is no way to rewind or fast forward, in the same track.

it's very bad because you must use apple remote earbud only. other headphone won't be working. plus, battery life is only 10 hours. are you kidding? voice over seems nice but there is no Korean. control is only by apple earbud. there is no button on shuffle. so what if earbud is broken, you should go to apple store? until then you can't listen to music no way? is it sign that apple try to make the whole ipod line which will only work with its own earbud? I could say monopoly? I don't know. it is not cool.

Please read at least one page of the thread before posting in it.....

I'm definitely not usually a complainer but I think this update to the shuffle is just silly and I feel no desire to replace my current shuffle. I'm starting to get fed up with Apple. Want a new shuffle? Great! Just buy one of our new headphone adapters for 19.99 in addition to the 79.99 shuffle if you would like to use a decent pair of headphones! I admit it is cool that is so small, but did the shuffle really NEED to be made smaller? Really?

How the hell are you meant to use headphones with this thing? Nobody sticks with the cruddy Apple earbuds, but it looks like you can't control the iPod any other way.

The only way to make this thing useful is to cut off the earbuds and splice a headphone jack onto the end. Apple's new motto: "It just works (but some soldering is required)".

This is the biggest "WTF?" I've ever ever seen from Apple.

i don't really think that having to use the apple headphones is a problem. people who are serious about music that have serious headphones aren't going to buy a 4gb shuffle.

He said the first gen, AKA the flash drive with the fake clickwheel :p

Ok in my mind that wasn't a shuffle, but you're right, the 1st Gen did. I was referring to the original postage stamp size (2 yrs ago) and the multicolor ones (1 yr ago). Both of them used the headphone jack to charge.

Sorry for the confusion.
