It will be interesting to see what they actually did, but the ability to decode Apple Lossless files means these new toys have some seriously new high-tech internal chips.

They've shoehorned a custom-fabbed Intel Nehalem Xeon (Bloomfield nano) in there.

'Cos decoding Apple Lossless needs petaflops of processing power

HAHAHAHAHA This is funny stuff!

Can we wait for something tangible before casting the criticism?

it just seems the new iPod shuffle is a pointless updating for the sake of updating upgrade. I have never heard of anybody complaining the prev gen iPod shuffle being too big. In fact, the buttons on the old shuffle are more intuitive and it works with any sort of headphone you already have. The new shuffle forces you to buy an adapter if you want to use your old headphone and really, couldn't apple have just updated the old shuffle slightly so it has voiceover features without removing the damn buttons? Maybe, make it compatible with remote but not forcing it down your throat.

1. + 2.: That was my point. It's still one or two clicks too much.
3: This is a basic feature which in my opinion is absolutely necessary for any kind of player. Especially fast backward.
4: I'm not a teenager anymore since almost a decade, thats the whole point. It just looks weird. And the 2 seconds are 1.8 seconds too much, when I could hold the device in my pocket in my hand.
6. The importance of playlists is waaaay behind the one of moving fast back and forth. IMO playlists simply don't belong to a shuffle.
7. How many favourites do you listen to? I don't even listen to all 200 songs currently stored on my iPod, most of them I skip.

I know, it's not worth it to start a war. And it's just my opinion. So I be quiet now.

@Benguitar: Nice, just make the controls on the device real buttons, not touchy things

"be quite now" how childish.

Anyways, going back to my original point. Apple and similar companies alike have different levels of their products. If you are not satisfied with the feature package with your new car, then you buy the next best set the is best for you. Or, you do not have need for a dvd player and want more features you buy blueray made by the same company. Customers like to have a choice and Apple is granting it to them. Some people don't care about buttons, sound quality, or the way it functions. Some people, like my girlfriend, just like to listen to music on a cute little piece of plastic and aluminum. Others like yourself would like to have a little more options with you music player.

I am not saying your opinion is wrong. All I am saying is, making this product would appeal to many consumers. Hence, they will buy it and that makes more money for Apple which they spend on research and design to create better and more innovative higher end products for people like yourself.

do you think the new colors are a reflection of the depressed economy (mood) of the country? ipod shuffle now in black coal or slate grey...

I'm kinda serious, because I can remember when the colored iMacs came out and it was kind of a happier time in the country and maybe it feels like too much dissonance when a company comes out with colorful products when the world is not colorful.

I remember a few years back hearing some commentators say that there was more violence in that year's superbowl ads than ever before and that it was because of the casualties of the iraq war and people having a harsher view toward life I guess you could say.....it's hard for me to remember the mood of each year they all seem to blend together....but I think you could definitely say the war brought out an edginess and the economy more for a forlorn feeling.

In all seriousness, i think that Apple are appealing to the masses. tbf, the minority will go out there and blow £30 on a pair of headphones, when a decent pair come free with it. Sure, they may stink from a coming out point, and the fact it doesn't block out external sounds, but lets face it, how many people do you see wear little white headphones? Tonnes. how many with other headphones? Not so many. The shuffles appeal to the people who aren't audiophiles and just wanna listen to music on a budget. if you are one of those people who bothers to get really expencive earbuds and all the best gear, then thats your problem, and you will have to pay the price. Because the majority are happy with the stock headphones.

Why are the Brit posts so miserable lately? Endless complaining. Rainy winter dragging on? No one else listen to you on that side of the pond? chadly chad, smiddlehurst, aapladay...go have a pint or two and mellow out.

I love the posts about how the runners need this exact ipod, and no other, with their preferred headphones, and anything less is a tragedy and a travesty. You do realize that the difference in weight or size doesn't mean crap in your running at all, right? I used to run 10Ks with a Walkman and even that didn't matter. Keep your current setup if this doesn't suit you. Buy some 3rd party headphone/earbuds which will be out soon enough.

I also love the posts where anybody NOT whining is a fanboy or apologist (this is for you, smiddy), because apparently only those who repeatedly complain about everything have the acceptably viewpoint.

As for those who thing the new Shuffle is ugly: Please send us your bona fides regarding industrial design and we'll compare those to Apple's. Apple's designs are the ones everyone else tries to copy. You are, of course, entitled to an opinion. Doesn't mean it's correct or well-informed.

.

Much like the rest of us, their economy took a vacation.

i can't believe people are still posting about not being able to use their own headphones. they are making an adapter! it seems like a no-brainer....

It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul in the size department. What's the point of removing the the controls, only to have them be elsewhere? You haven't actually saved any bulk that way. You've gained nothing. But Apple gains one more sale from those people who have third-party headphones.

Funny you say that - but it has been a darn long winter. Cold and dark. Starting to get milder now with lighter evenings / mornings.. so, so glad! :)

Signed,

A Brit.

This is obviously geared towards the workout, but I think that the tactile feel of buttons are far superior to the cable controls, which I think seems easy to mess with by accident. It also allows for other headphones without some ungainly adapter. I think its a horrible gimmick. I also miss the built-in USB from the first gen, which made it so easy to quick charge. I personally would have sacrificed some of the size for controls and the built-in USB, which could have been slide-out.

And the whole thing about scrapping these features to make it smaller is pure BS. I've seen smaller 16 gig flash drives.

On the plus side, it looks way cool.

How do I use my running headphones, Apple earbuds are worthless for exercise since they fall out. Shuffles are THE iPod for running so this doesn't make sense.

My thoughts exactly. Running is the only thing I use my shuffle for (other than that, it's iphone). However, I can't run with apple headphones - I'm putting them back in about every 3 steps. So as incredibly cool as this thing looks, there's simply no way I could buy one.

Even if a 3rd party comes out with headphones that have the appropriate controls and don't fall out when running this is a no-go. Having controls on the cord is surprisingly annoying when you're running and the cord is swinging back and forth hitting you because of the extra weight.

It's a stunning design, and I'm blown away that they actually made the 2G smaller, but when my ipod shuffle dies (it's over 2 years old now) I'll have to find another 2G.

Nike Plus??

Why would they not include a nike plus receiver in the shuffle. I know that it adds some cost. But if I were going to buy a really small, low capacity music player, I would want to be able to use it on my runs. I love my iPod nano, but it could be smaller to run with. Nike plus is great for someone who runs at all to keep track of their stats. Should have been included.

Other than that. I like the new form factor. I am not sure about the removal of the buttons however. For the next revision what about including voice recognition to select the songs you want?

If it works the same as the current Apple In Ear Headphones with the 4G Nano and the 2G iPod Touch, you double click to skip tracks, triple click to back up a track.

Technically there is no way to rewind or fast forward, in the same track.

thanks for the info, its a point for me as i listen to my shuffle almost all the time when walking around (connect it to my belt loop), and as such when bumping into people and chatting (which happens about every 5 seconds at uni), i end up missing the first half of songs all the time!

This is from Apple?

First Apple product I've really shook my head at and asked "What ARE they thinking??"

Totally agree. Did anyone see the demo? That voice over is so stupid. Tells me the song and artist? Who cares? I put the damn song on the thing, I already know the song and artist.

Then the headphones, OMG. Those are the worst headphones they could have upgraded to use their gimick voice over. Others may be able to make headphones to work with it, but thats gonna cost ya.

Worst product release from Apple in years.
