It guess it's a case of "Plus ca Change" with people's responses - here's a selection of quotes from these very forums from when the original iPod was launched...

The members of MacRumors don't really have a history of correctly predicting the success of a product ;)

hahaha. Fantastic. All those geeks saying "epic failure!" for the original ipod. And yet, it saved Apple's hide. You mean Steve Jobs was smarter than a bunch of geeks on a message board? Shocking.

I don't understand the need of people to jump on a message board to proclaim that THEY WILL NOT BUY a certain product. Like anyone gives a ****.

PS. The Sansa! you've got to be kidding.

What a load of rubbish, who wants this ipod with those crappy earbuds!!:(

I think it is quite funny that people are dissing the Apple earbuds so much. Isn't it a running gag about the ubiquity of the white earbuds that we on every train, plane and bus.

Wake up people, most people use the earbuds that come in the box! It is probably well over 80%. I see them everywhere.

The Mad fools!:p

I want to know how they are gonna promote this in the store? What customer would want other peoples ear wax in them when testing on the floor?

They dont have to test them, Apple says they're good that means you buy it

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but does anyone know if it can be controlled without the iPod earbuds?

Apple has unofficially said there will be an adapter to use other headphones with the shuffle but there is no product available for purchase *yet*

Yeah, but you're forgetting one thing: the original iPod was actually a good product. This is like a bad joke from the Onion. Next up, MacBook Wheel?

you are probably not in the market for a shuffle in that case.

The iPod shuffle is the best iPod for us runners. The problem is the OEM earbuds don't stay in my ears while running. I use a pair that hook over my ear. Looks like I'm not going to be 'upgrading' my Shuffle any time soon.

the problem is they took a PERFECT product and moved the controls off of it - instead of just adding an additional set of controls on the earbuds. how you people cannot understand our frustration is beyond me. it's actually quite comical how some people will just blindy support apple no matter what they put out.

to all the intelligent people with more than two brain cells firing - DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE. IT SHOWS THEM THIS BEHAVIOR IS ACCEPTABLE.

First, learn to use the Shift key.

"our frustration": dude, the product isn't even out as you write your post. You get easily frustrated, do you? And believe me, we all see where the comedy lies here.

Right. We, the people who see this as a perfectly fine product based on what we read, although it may require 3 minutes of a learning curve to operate, all "blindly support" everything. Because only you, and you alone, have the clarity of mind to see the real conspiracy to deprive us of our god-given rights to a product that is perfectly tailored our very specific needs. It's not perfect...(stamps feet)...wah-wah-wah.

And you guys are the same ones who lambast Apple for not frequently redesigning form factors on the computer end, just because you want something "new". And when they do introduce a new form factor, you're all "they took a perfect product" and crippled it. Grow up.

Klipsch and Scosche earbuds for new iPod Shuffle:

"Apple said it would have third-parties developing accessories for the new third-generation iPod Shuffle, and sure enough, they are. First out of the gate: Klipsch and Scosche. And by the end of the week--if not the end of today--we should be hearing about more."

Now what are they going to bitch about?

Engadget pictures are great:

Oh man, I SO don't need a new shuffle...

Geezus! People need to relax.
Non-Apple headphones: There will be an adapter, there always is. Belkin and others will soon release one I'm certain. There's always a lag between releases and third-party products. Count me as one of those that want to use higher-quality headphones, but I'm not loosing sleep of it. Apple leaves a void for third-parties to fill, it's part of the Mac market "circle of life".
Clicking sequence: Complicated? So you need to learn 5 (or 6) one-button clicking sequences. "OMG! I don't think I can learn 6 more things in life. Life is too difficult already!" Seriously, my 3 year old niece could learn to use this in a day, I'm confident, if you're worried about it, you'll catch on...maybe by the second day.
No buttons on the player: While I agree it would have been convenient to also have buttons on the player (make the whole player a button), Apple obviously continues to advance a minimalist design & UI approach with this product. Most times, I'm fumbling around to get at the buttons on my current shuffle, whereas the headphones (cord) are always right there next to my cheek.
Everything else: The design I feel is simple. Could it use more splash or elegance? Maybe but why? It's a minimalist design and product. Some creative entrepreneurs will come up with "clip-on" designs that make it a personalized button, fashion accessory, fancier tie clip or whatever. I'd like to see more colors, which they will do, but I am surprised that it wasn't intro'd with more colors...again, not loosing sleep over it.

So personally I like this version, can't wait to try it first-hand. My 2nd gen shuffle died on me last fall and ironically, it was the buttons that caved-in and wore-out (same as with my daughter's), so it's a unusable piece of scrap now. With the new design, I would replace the headphones and continue to use it. I will most likely buy one since I feel the shuffle is more convenient and usable for workouts and other activities I do. So far, this looks like a good step forward in this product's evolution, IMHO.
:)

Klipsch and Scosche earbuds for new iPod Shuffle:

Now what are they going to bitch about?

The fact that the headphones in question will cost $99.99 and models to come later will "range in price from $49.99 to 99.99" would be my next argument. Having to buy a new headset entirely is even less economic than buying an adapter.

Totally agree.

This one is for workouts. Only thing: i think 4gb are way too much for the time doing sports. i hope they introduce a smaller 1 or 2 gb version for around 49€. but i doubt it...

Its not an issue of memorizing clicks, its an issue of simplicity. One click to advance / go to previous tracks as opposed to triple-click / double-click respectively with the new shuffle? Running on a treadmill and having to do that instead of just clicking one button is monotonous. Even seeking a track is tedious, but I'll let that slide since the shuffle isn't intended for seeking.

For what it's worth, when I have the 2nd gen shuffle clipped to my shirt I still mess up the forward and backward buttons sometimes if I don't look... using the remote might be easier for some people. Sucks that Apple removed the option for me to buy another 2nd gen shuffle because I prefer that model... oh wait.

I also really liked the physical wheel on my old 1st gen iPod... I can't believe apple changed that and took away that feature of being able to spin the actual wheel... and THEN they removed the four buttons from my 3rd gen iPod and replaced them with a wheel that "clicks" (if you can believe that).. ridiculous, I'm still shocked that I was able to adapt to the new system of using the wheel to scroll AND pause music... It's a good thing that these products still function as they originally did even though new products that they've introduced no longer have the things that I (and EVERYONE else) love.

I think I am going to pick up one of these. I am used to the controls (with the exception of voice over) because I control my iPod Touch, and MacBook Pro with my new Apple In Ear headphones with the same controls.

I actually catch myself trying to use the headphone remote on my older ipods all the time, and miss it when I can't!

From Endgadget:

"Apple is apparently aware that not everyone wants to use its proprietary earbuds with the new buttonless iPod shuffle, so the company is working on a special adapter with the same in-line controls. The adapter will include the buttons that are built into the earbuds that are included with the new shuffle and will let users [control the Shuffle] without forcing them to give up their favorite earbuds or headphones, according to Engadget."

Like I said...

Where are they getting the idea that 1,000 songs fits on that 4GB Shuffle? With the recent iTunes Plus upgrade, all my song files are a little bigger now. In my library, 757 songs are 4.54 GBs worth.
