What has gotten into Apple lately? Is there a correlation between not having Jobs present at the moment and the release of the underpowered iMac and a bit weak Mac Mini upgrade that is more expensive and this, in my view, downgraded product?

What the hell are you talking about? There is nothing wrong with new iMac or Mac Mini, they were both superior refreshes, far better than what they replaced.

How could you even come to this conclusion unless you are just reaching for something else to bitch about?

This is what happens when Apple continues to 'develop' something it has already perfected. No where to go but down. I'll bet the world of headphone manufacturers is pretty pissed off right about now...

Where did the buttons go? Somehow, I feel like losing the iconic white circle was not a smart move on their part, even though they pulled it off with the touch. Now it really looks like a stick of gum (albeit, an awful flavor of grey or black).

People may not want to be forced to use Apple's headphones just to control the thing; although, at this price, those who buy it may not care about having nicer headphones. In my opinion, you should always have some form of controls on a device, in case you forget your headphones or want to upgrade them later.

You can still but the old ones.

I agree with some of what you're saying. For some the headphones requirement will be annoying (although hopefully there are still enough old shuffles around to get one now!).
However its not Apple's job to make one of every type of MP3 player possible - its a bit silly to complain to Apple if your specific requirements aren't met. And it is specific - lots of storage, small size (have you SEEN how small a Nano is by the way?!) and a very low price. It's not true that you can't have everything - but you can't expect Apple to make it all.

They replaced a product that met MOST NEEDS with one that DOES NOT. I just cannot deal with people - they are just not as smart as I am :).

I agree with everyone's complaints about moving the controls to the ear bud cord, but something else is glaring at me right now.... the lack of usability with current FM transmitters or AUX jacks for in-car use.

To this day the best iPod shuffle ever was the very first one with the built in USB jack. There were no issues with sound and the fact that you didn't need a special cable or dock to connect it to your Mac (except for the eMac issue) was wonderful. The first shuffles were the most versatile since most of them ran double duty as a thumb drive as well. The Second Gen shuffle was not conducive for thumb drive use and neither will this one, but then again Apple isn't really going after that market anyways.

well, i posted here about a month that it would be nice that iPhone text-to-speech our albuns or playlists, for sake of use when you're running.
after listening the ipod shuffle video, i wonder if you would understand alex & sam voices while running (seems like booth are eating some cookies).

You really think the old shuffle met most people's needs? The number of people on here who bitched when the other gen shuffles came out - 'oh, no screen?!!' Then they realised they weren't aimed at them and they went and bought a nano! Or they kept on bitching...

The whole front page of the Apple web site is devoted to this pointless little toy as if they just discovered the cure for cancer  once again every thing they sell is way over priced! $80 + tax for a 4GB memory stick with headphones

Hmmm. Controls on the earphone cable itself. I'm not so sure. They seem to have based this Shuffle for those who are pro-exercise, but as a runner I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to change the songs when the earphone cable will be moving. No cable in the world is going to stay still whilst the person wearing it is running. Still, I think the design is fantastic. I'll get one when the price comes down.

Hmm... more cash, lost in a tangle of songs.

Pass.

I like the last design better. If that one was $29 it would be unavoidable.

It is more expensive yet you get LESS features. Look what's missing:
* Go to PREVIOUS SONG
* SKIP BACKWARDS of same song
* GO FORWARDS in same song

Not necessary? Ever listened to a mash up from a DJ like tecno, trance, dance or something like that? It's usually a mix lasting for an hour or so... how would I navigate through that? Not I guess..

Make the mix a podcast and insert chapters, dead easy!

Many people should remember that the original iPod also was considered a fail when it came out. By many people on this very forum...

for those complaining about the crappy headphones: just use the apple In-Ear-Headphones:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/inearheadphones/
They are listed under "Accessories" on the specs page:
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/specs.html

or: use another ipod - there are so many models out there, stick to your target group. :)

btw: in germany its 75,-€ (!), thats about 95,70$, thats 16,70$ (12,59€) more just because I´m not an US resident!? great...that is pissing me off, not the headphones...

Maths fail - you removed the VAT before doing the conversion so although it's $8 less before adding Sales Tax, it's also $8 less before adding VAT.

Exactly - that's what I said - it's $8 less in the UK.

To get a fair comparison of prices between countries you have to compare the prices without local VAT/Sales Tax, as the tax varies from country to country and state to state and goes to government not Apple.

The £59 UK price includes tax.

The $79 US price excludes tax.

The UK price without tax = £51.31 = $70.87

The US price without tax = $79.00 = £57.19

Which is an $8.13 or £5.88 difference.

This is a brilliant design, as a runner I always wanted to have controls on the cable, not on the ipod itself. Although it might take some time to get used to, I think it's quite smart to speak the playlists for you to choose from.

The only downside is you have to use with bad sounding Apple earphones. Is there an adaptor I wonder to use with 3rd party earphones.

I think this iPod shuffle is Apple's little test dummy to see if they can relay new products to its customers without fancy announcements or anything but only through its online or flagship stores.
