Exactly - that's what I said - it's $8 less in the UK.

To get a fair comparison of prices between countries you have to compare the prices without local VAT/Sales Tax, as the tax varies from country to country and state to state and goes to government not Apple.

The £59 UK price includes tax.

The $79 US price excludes tax.

The UK price without tax = £51.31 = $70.87

The US price without tax = $79.00 = £57.19

Which is an $8.13 or £5.88 difference.

Stop that maths right now - you're giving people in Europe less to moan about. Having said that, people in the states are being RIPPED OFF - $8 more ARE YOU JOKING?! GRRRRRRR

I do not let anyone near my CDs. I have over 1000 disks, some of them out of print, and I do not want them to get scratched or damaged in any way. My kids are careful, but not nearly as careful as I would be.

As far as the portable stereo goes, they are not going to fit in a backpack to be listened to on the school bus, so not really an option.

I am not going to back down on the earbud issue. It is not a good idea to go proprietary with this. The mini jack has been around for years and for Apple to ditch all those who spend all that money on Bose, Etymotic, Shure and other high end earbuds will be out in the cold if - and that is a bid if - Apple decides to roll this out to the whole iPod line.

Yes, maybe I am not the target audience, but my kids sure are. With this shuffle the options are cruddy earbuds that do not fit or buy an adapter. Not good for the kids who are saving for what they already consider to be a big purchase.

dunno if anyone has said this but it would be really cool if the song artist did the voice over. It wouldn't be that hard to do, they would just need to add the recorded song name to the iTunes download.

When apple doesn't change the design everybody tell yes yes good performance but we want new design when apple change complitely the way to watch a product everybody tell fail fail.

what do you like?

love this product.

I use my 2nd generation Shuffle everyday with a very high quality good fitting earbud pair that costs 5x what the shuffle costs. It works great. Before I would buy the new Shuffle, Apple would have to have to offer an extension cord with the controls so that I can keep using my earbuds.

It seems to me that despite all the bitching and moaning, the new Shuffle will be a huge hit...

The opinions expressed on this site means nothing. This product (along with all previous iPod versions) will sell by the millions.

I think it's very brave of Apple to bring speech technology to market. Yes, the machine has limited navigation features, but it's a Shuffle - you can tell by the name, it's supposed to jump around the songs. The controls are an enhancement to this, not a complete replacement. If you want full navigation then buy a bigger iPod.

LOL, this.

Nobody I know uses the original Apple headphones. Across the board, the opinion is that they sound like crap, hurt, and fall out.

i use them - and run with them - and they sound ....... ok not brill, but ok

oh i ponyed up for the black BTW

Looks great! And for once this is something we didn't see coming!

The white earphones that come with iPods are fine anyway.

If you're an audiophile should you even be considering a Shuffle???

Of course the truth is most iPod users use the Apple headphones, so it's only an issue for a tiny minority.

Didn't the first Shuffle have no controls at all? You either listened to your playlists in a linear fashion or you shuffled them. That's why it was called a Shuffle. What it lacked in controls it made up for in price.

I don't see this new model as any different. You can still use whatever headphones you want and choose either linear or shuffle mode, just like before. But if you want more control, you either use Apple's headset (or a compatible 3rd-party one that will surely soon hit the market) or you buy a different iPod.

Controls on junk earbuds. Brilliant. Forget sound quality, that new Shuffle is stylin', kids. I bet Paris thinks that's hot.

Voice-Over

I wonder what gen iPods the new iTunes 8.1 will support (I'm assuming it will give Voice-Over functionality to legacy iPods, as it's just a sound bite!)
Nig.

Not with people who actually use the shuffle for it's best use....working out/running/biking/hiking. That requires headphones that actually stay in your ears while moving around. I clip mine on my shirt colar, stuff the wires under my shirt, good to go. It's easy to reach the controls.

In my eyes/mind if they kept the same form factor as the old one with more memory it would have been perfect.

Off to buy a 2GB model or two.

There comes a point when something is too small for its own good. Now this is so small that they remove all controls and they place them on the earphone cord and the controls involve multiple clicks.

Sorry, but I voted this a big negative. I kinda like the old shuffle and I was thinking of getting one for my 5 year old daughter, but this one, forget it.

Basically it is now locking you out of using any 3rd party phones. Also, I do not want to click many times just to fast forward a track. It should be one click, that's it.

I seriously believe that Apple's obsession with "Thin" has gone too far and they have totally lost the plot.

I think it was the white stick with the control buttons on it. It was attached to a tether....dumbest idea for carrying around.

Shuffle not iAudiophile

Soooo.... say i have this really nice pair of ultimate ears headphones. If i buy one of these i have no way to control the volume or what track im listening to? sounds like a great porduct...

I have a nice pair of Sennheiser IE8s (probably not quite worth the asking price). Thing is, with good in-ear-buds you can hear jitter harmonics in the treble frequencies on most iPods. Strangely my iPhone G3 sounds the best of my three iPods - it's surprisingly musical. My 1st gen Video iPod has quite an ugly sound unless you roll off the higher frequencies. I have no idea what the DACs in this shuffle will be like, but the apple buds probably spare you the worst of it. Besides, there will be 3rd party adapters and ear-phones in no-time, and apple will probably do their in-ear buds for shuffle. It may be that the iPhone controller will work on these, opening up some existing 3rd party options. We'll see. I understand the annoyance, and if it shares the iPhone analogue converters (unlikely), it would actually be a shame.

Why??

I'm a hugh Apple fan, but this new little item seems a bit pointless.

Does anyone really need to be told what playlist, what artist and what song is playing??? More than likely, the person using the iPod is the same person who loaded the songs onto it in the first place... So wouldn't they know what's on it??

Now, if this Shuffle had voice recognition built into it so that I could speak the song and then hear it... THAT would be something worth having.

There's my 2 cents
