A ton of people complaining about a monitor they don’t own (and were never in the market for anyway).

Bought mine day one, it’s exactly what I wanted it to be. A modern replacement for the Thunderbolt Display that has a camera, speakers and mic built in. I use it 8+ hours a day for work. Haven’t had one single issue.

The camera was a bit blown out before the first firmware update, but not nearly as bad as reviewers were claiming. After the first firmware update the camera quality improved and is on par with the rest of Apples devices.

I have no buyers remorse because it’s a fantastic display for people who wanted a replacement Thunderbolt Display that worked like the old Thunderbolt Display. If it’s not for you, cool, go somewhere else and buy something else.
You sound pretty defensive..
but I’m glad you are enjoying it, as it is a great product.

However even the Apple fanatic reviewers say it missed the mark - at its retail price point anyway

The capping and high amount of copium in this post is real

This product has a lot to hate. Aside from the absurd price...well...we got the elephant in the room: That cable

The price is exactly where it should be for the specs and design.

Linus is a tool. He barely knows how to use a computer and promotes himself as some grand daddy of computing.

At this price I cannot find a 5K display with six speaker surround sound, exceptional build quality, etc. It doesn’t exist.

So if this firmware patches the bug I’m buying the monitor this weekend.

Here is what we spent $2500 on 20 years ago. You have it so good these days and whine like a spoilt baby…

I saw a video of one of the new Ventura features, the webcam can "see" the surface of the desk in front of you, use some AR warping similar to the Notes.app document scanner, and present "overhead video" of your napkin doodles or whatever is on your desk.

It's honestly pretty cool, and the stuff like this goes a lot farther to explain why they think a display needs an OS than that "following you around the room" silliness that launched earlier.

But I swear, if you did some kind of consumer survey and asked "do you want some fun tricks and gimmicks, or just the best camera possible," everyone would say "give me the best camera."

p.s. More often than not, these firmware updates have knocked my screen offline, left with three dots perpetually animating for hours. I have to do some series of unplugging and power cycles to get the thing working again.

There is no doubt in my mind that this came out about a year before it was ready. My guess is that they had planned on a 27" iMac Pro to launch instead of the Mac Studio, and when that got scuttled, they realized that they had to get the Studio Display out quick so the line didn't look stupid.

Think about this sentence a bit ....

Is it possible folks are complaining about it, and don't own it...precisely because of what the product ended up being/including (and not including)?

(i.e. they were in the market for this product...but then no longer were once the offering was unveiled)

I love mine and will probably buy another within the next year. Sure, I wish it had a power switch and a lower price, but I don't regret buying it one bit.
A workaround really, but if the lack of a power switch bothers you enough(I know it would bother me) I've found using a HomeKit enabled plug with a NFC tag works quite nicely. Tap it for ON/OFF and you're all set.

Not sure what you're getting at. I was replying to someone who was acting like this is weird.

I like the ASD.

Keep up man, I was called an Apple shill in another Apple Studio Display thread a few mins ago actually.
I don't think they were speaking solely about the firmware update. But you're right, sorry for the sarcasm.

Ain't that the truth, sad as it is. It's the only way some can feel a little better having a megaphone and a tiny bit of power.

I've had my Studio Display for about a week and a half now. Setting it up next to my 5K iMac, it was immediately noticeable how much better the display is even though they're both 5K.

The biggest issue are the people angry it doesn't have 5K + 120Hz ProMotion and MiniLED for $1,599 when there is not one monitor on planet Earth with those specs - and even if there were, it wouldn't be anywhere close to that price point in 2022. Expectations are way out of whack.

I wouldn't co-mingle the high refresh rate with MiniLED

The latter would increase the cost a lot, whereas the former would not.

I didn't say there was a better option, I said that I wasn't impressed with this particular display. Apple's own XDR feels absolutely luxurious, the Studio display does not.
Putting aside the Studio Display having a much cleaner looking backside than the XDR, you're also talking about a product that is 3X the price, so I hope it would feel luxurious.

for multiple ASD's would it update all of them at once or is best to do an individual update per display?
