No it really isn't. Absurd price, non-removable power cable, outdated specs, the fact it can't turn, the fact you can't remove the stand, extra $400 for height adjust (and it doesn't even go that high,) has an A12 in it for no reason other than camera processing, the majority of it's features cannot be used on anything other than macOS which makes the need for an A12 in it pretty pointless, how crap the webcam is despite being a big overpriced monitor when an iPhone that's 1/3 the cost has a better camera than it. I can go on
I knew the post was from you as soon as I read it. I love my Studio Display. Is there anything you don't hate?

LMAO. The world's gone to Hell in a handcart mate and, even that aside, inflation is a thing. That iMac you're referring to would not have that same price gap today. You're comparing chalk and cheese.
Yea and over 8 years the cost of things go down. Also the American dollar is skyrocketing in value so in the US there is absolutely no excuse

I find it potentially troubling that your ability to keep this monitor working (updated firmware) is already tied to the level of software running on its host computer. I can believe there's a technical reason for this limitation but that only serves to demonstrate why this thing is too complicated for its own good. You shouldn't have to update your computer's operating system just so that you can fix the monitor attached to it. Bad ju ju.

I think where this discussion gets hung up is that many folks, despite being fans and users of Apple, don't enjoy admitting out loud that Apple does so much artificial product feature segmentation simply to maintain and grow margins.

They really don't go out of their way to make the "best products they could" in many segments and price tiers anymore.

Everything is about driving upgrades, upsells and the next tier of higher margins for them.

Yes .. They are a business .. but many of us, perhaps naively, really like to think of Apple as a company that skews towards "what's best for their customers"....and that is more image and branding than reality at this point (sadly).
Well said

The moment when apple doesn’t put their A chip or M chip on every single of their product that does not fundamentally demand computation power is when we can expect some decent quality from apple. Make the best monitor, not a monitor that can do everything but nothing particularly well.

I welcome the firmware update for bug fixes. But this update should’ve never existed. What if software support ended? Throw the display away? No answer just yet but I don’t have much hope.
What do you think will happen when supports ends? The firmware will explode and set the screen on fire?

There’s zero reason to assume the screen will not last as long as dumb screens.

Not to forget this is also a major upgrade from the iMac where the screen does get obsolete when the computer is outdated. My 2015 iMac is slow as hell but the screen is still great.

Do you actually own any Apple products or are you just here to try your best to crap on them? Almost all of your posts are negative and mean spirited.
Let's see:
-An iPhone 13 Pro
-Formerly a M1 Mac Mini that I gave to my parents
-A 14 inch Macbook Pro
-An 8th gen iPad
-I wear an AirTag on my work badge
-I use an Apple Card as my primary credit card
-I just ordered an Apple TV
-I use AirPods Max

Just because I use Apple products doesn't mean I cannot be critical towards other products of theirs, especially with black and white dumpster fires like this monitor and other bad policies Apple does. if it's good, it's good, and this monitor isn't good.

Plus the Mac is more my passion, so seeing a new monitor for it at last but it not being up to snuff makes me disappointed.

This is in fact an upgrade from the iMac where the screen does get obsolete when the computer is outdated. My 2015 iMac is slow as hell but the screen is still great. But I still need to toss out the entire machine.

I just fired up my iMac 2017 5k 27" to get BootCamp up. I had not used it since I got the new MacBook pro last year.

That screen is still beautiful.

Totally kicks my LG 5K (bought used)'s display butt.

That's all I want apple. that. just sell me the screen.

Maybe some enterprising company is out there about to do a Kickstarter. Or maybe one of the current mac peripheral companies can source the 5K displays and put out a "dumb" one. OWC? Satechi?

There HAS to be profit in that, I hope.

Heck, to save money, do not provide a stand. Require a VESA mount arm for the desk. Or sell it alongside and use an existing one.

Amazon search: monitor desk arms
Found: 100's

Let me pick an arm mount.

Just sell one of those along side your display.

So much blind hate for this product. I’ve had mine since day 1 and it’s been exactly what I’ve wanted for years.

It looks amazing, I’ve had no audio issues (though glad there’s new firmware), and the webcam now looks as good as any other built in webcam Apple ships in Macs, only with Center Stage (usefulness of that feature is debatable).

The only other 5K display on the market is ugly to look at, is 6 years old, and still costs $1,299. 4K is not the same as 5K. Hi-PPI/Retina is glorious. $1,599 is expensive but any $1,000+ display is a luxury item and I’m happy to have it.
Bless you, almost cancelled the display reading this thread until here

There's not really a market for 5K resolutions due to component cost and the niche use case. For most 4K is enough, which is why only Apple and LG make 5K displays.

And those who insist on 5K always push the "but macOS scaling" meme everytime to justify why they can't just get a 32 inch 4K monitor for much cheaper. Literally everytime.

The trouble is that macOS works better with Native Scaling (so no 4k), and there's no choice for 5K panels.
The only one is the LG which still costs a lot and has a horrible build quality.

Don't get me wrong, I too am very angry for being extorted into paying 1800€ for the studio display (I think 1400€ would have been a fairer price), but having spent the money, I'll try to appreciate it for what it is and I appreciate the fact it's build wih alluminium.

I actually already have a 4K panel (that I'll sell) but unfortunately After Effects doesn't work well with non native scale when displaying vector artwork (I tested this extensively), therefore I'm forced to choose between a 1440p and a 5K panel and I'm not ever going to use a display below 4K.

Once again, it's a kind of extorsion but I need to see sharp visuals for my job, and I'll try to enjoy it for what it is.

I considered the possibility of waiting for a mini-led option, but it'll be outrageously expensive and mini-led is not strictly necessary; also I wouldn't be able to watch disney+, netflix and prime video with my apple TV on it (or game) as it would only be usb-c input.

In the end it's much more efficient to have the studio display for work only (which is still a decent panel, even if not mini-led) and a separate OLED tv for content consumption.
Both things together would probably cost less than an apple 27" mini-led display, especially given how fairly "cheap" 48" LG Oleds are.

As a last note, I don't think mini-led is a good technology for animation.
I tested it with the macbook pro (which I sent back), and it doesn't cope well with fast moving shapes, as the dimming zones don't react fast enough to give a stable image (hard to explain with words).
I'd rather wait a few years and jump directly to oled.

What was the name of that gimmick phone that just shipped???

Nothing?

LOL. I would even buy a 5K display from them, and they could save all sorts of money by not putting it in a case.
