There's not really a market for 5K resolutions due to component cost and the niche use case. For most 4K is enough, which is why only Apple and LG make 5K displays.

And those who insist on 5K always push the "but macOS scaling" meme everytime to justify why they can't just get a 32 inch 4K monitor for much cheaper. Literally everytime.

I hear you. I do.

It's just so sad.

When I go to System Settings > General > Software Update, I only receive the message "Your Mac is up to date." Where can I find my monitor's firmware version? Maybe it installed the update in the background without me noticing, since I do have automatic updates on?

UPDATE: I found my firmware version using the System Information app. Looks like my monitor is still on the previous build of 19F77, but the Software Update section of the Settings app keeps saying that my Mac is up to date. Not sure what to do?

They did? Is it “sensational” now?

I just checked the product page for the Apple Studio Display and it still lists the webcam as “Sensational camera”

Any ASD customers out there that consider the webcam to be sensational? Truly curious 🧐
You clearly don’t get marketing. And also no other display has a camera that can zoom directly on your face.

Simple 5K, please.
Hold the fancy stuff that requires way more firmware updates that a display ever should.

Let's see:
-An iPhone 13 Pro
-Formerly a M1 Mac Mini that I gave to my parents
-A 14 inch Macbook Pro
-An 8th gen iPad
-I wear an AirTag on my work badge
-I use an Apple Card as my primary credit card
-I just ordered an Apple TV
-I use AirPods Max

Just because I use Apple products doesn't mean I cannot be critical towards other products of theirs, especially with black and white dumpster fires like this monitor and other bad policies Apple does. if it's good, it's good, and this monitor isn't good.

Plus the Mac is more my passion, so seeing a new monitor for it at last but it not being up to snuff makes me disappointed.
"Black and white dumpster fire"?? And calling it a StudiNo Display are not thoughtful critiques. They are not even accurate. They are something I would expect to hear on a playground, and add nothing to the discussion other than vitriol. If you want positive change, try to start with constructive criticism. And don't forget, they are YOUR opinion of a product you don't even own. There are plenty of Studio Display OWNERS that love the monitor. And you both can be correct in your opinion.

You're clearly not a photographer.

Many people (such as myself) are, and can instantly see and appreciate the difference when editing/post-processing image files for printing.

And, as I mentioned earlier, the Studio Display image quality is much better than on my 5K iMac sitting next to it, even though the resolution is the same for both.

The Studio Display is not intended for gamers.

To be fair, a big part of the reason why users are negative towards this product is because, rightly, they expect it to just work like any other display.

The FaceTime camera in particular is an example of where Apple chose to make a compromise and have yet to explain their reasoning. Similarly, issues with the software should have been ironed out before shipping.

I actually really like the product and the display is just gorgeous, much better than the 5K iMac. I doubt many so called experts would tell the difference between this and the XDR at 500 nits.

Anyone who comes out with the “old tech” argument is overlooking that the majority of consumer and professional displays continue to use standard LED backlight, and that there wasn’t a chance in hell that Apple of all companies was going to release a 27” 5K mini-LED display in this price range.

Some of the old tech complaints are more about it not being a ProMotion (high refresh) at least.

That wouldn't have added any complexity and very likely minimal cost, and would have been a really nice thing to have, especially when pairing with the latest MBP's, which all have ProMotion internal displays.

ProMotion (120hz) isn’t present because there isn’t enough bandwidth on Thunderbolt.

and such a screen doesn't exist at 27" from any manufacturer. what's the point?

The same was true of 5k monitors before Apple worked with LG to "make them"...

(I'm unclear on the timelines on the PLS 5k panels that were in things like the HP offering)

We expect Apple to push these sorts of boundaries...as they've routinely done many times in many areas.
