So after it failing numerous times to "fix" itself, I got on the phone with Apple and was trying to explain the issue. The help lady didn't have any ideas so she went to a senior person. While I was waiting for her the display suddenly got the install to work and is now fixed. It only took about 6 install/update cycles for it to resolve itself. *facepalm*
Could you describe the process that "fixed" your problem updating? My Mac Studio+Studio Display has for over 30 minutes been sitting on the screen saying it's updating. The text says: "The screen may turn off for a few minutes during this firmware update. Do not disconnect or power off your Apple Studio Display". Of course I'm reluctant to disturb it but it's clearly not going to finish.

What did you do?

It was waiting for the MR "positive" post, should be good now.

This thread hit a sore spot.

How many pages will it go on?

56?

I am thinking 56 pages.

Think about this sentence a bit ....

Is it possible folks are complaining about it, and don't own it...precisely because of what the product ended up being/including (and not including)?

(i.e. they were in the market for this product...but then no longer were once the offering was unveiled)

How can you be in the market for a product you don't know anything about?
You didn't know the features, technical specifications or the price.

I am sure glad this fix came out today. I figure my two ordered Studio Displays will be built in the middle of next week and have the latest software/firmware before starting their trip to the USA. My initial monitor connections will be to my 14" M1 Max as my Mac Studio Ultra will not get here until around 11 October.

I wonder if the CPU (Intel or "M or A") type in the attached computer has had any impact on the various threads one reads about the new monitor's issues?

There may have been a less than subtle message in that the Apple Studio super mini and Studio Display were announced at the same sequentially with the computer first.

These two new displays with VESA mounts will replace my two vintage 2013 27" Apple displays on VESA mounts.

A ton of people complaining about Putin and they don't live with him or in Russia. Opinions do not require ownership.

But then a computer monitor isn't an important thing at all and so isn't complaining over when you don't own or use the product.

I can confirm. When I roll into work, several of the desks have 120hz wide screen monitors. I like to use spaces for different tasks. When I swipe, the transition from space to space is buttery smooth. It actually makes my home iMac look and feel janky (2019). Of course the wide screen monitors aren't retina, so there's that.
Do you feel like the lower PPI of these Ultrawide monitors (I'm guessing they're around 109 PPI at 3440x1440) is tolerable for long hour usage?

"modern"? lol

old af panel inside a "modern" enclosure?.. ah gotcha.

4K monitors started coming out 20 years ago, and it seems the Windows PC world hasn't really progressed further when it comes to screen resolution.

Dear apple,

Make a "dumb" 27" 5K and I will buy three.

Not joking around. I would buy three on the spot.
You know you can just not use the webcam and speakers, despite the speakers being the best on any monitor. There’s no “smart” display that can’t be turned into a ”dumb” display just by not using the features. Just use it as your display, and voila! You have a dumb monitor.

This firmware update for my monitor was 487MB.

For an update for a monitor.

A monitor.

It’s about 200MB for typical television firmware updates.

For an update for a television.

A television that only does one thing.

This isn’t our grand dad’s days of floppy discs.

At full cost.

Here's my take as a recent Studio Display owner and designer:

I was pissed at Apple after they announced the Studio Display. It didn't have a 120Hz refresh rate, no mini-LED, and the pixel response wasn't much faster than my 2014 1080p TV. I felt my wait for a premium display hadn't been answered. Worse, it had been answered by tech from 5 years ago. I railed against the company to co-workers and to friends. I just wanted a replacement for the 5K iMac I bought in 2017.

So I did what others recommend in this thread: I went and found the best alternatives I could find. I bought a highly-rated 4K LG monitor and set it up with a webcam attached to the top. I plugged in the power cable, the display cable, the webcam cable, and speaker cables. My desk was now a mess of wires, so I bought a bunch of cable organizers and scrunched them up behind the display stand. "I can make this work" I said to myself.

But it wasn't enough. I was annoyed by the giant webcam sticking out from above my monitor. I was bothered by the mass of cables visible if I moved away from the center of the display stand. And most importantly, despite the 4K resolution and excellent color support, I was upset by the pixels per inch making my designs look fuzzy and text and lines harder to see.

Then this weekend it hit me. I was either going to pay the money for a Studio Display or I was going to continue being unhappy. There's no other 5K monitor that compares in terms of features or design. I made the same mistake tech reviewers make when they compare products based purely on specs and not the entire experience of *using* the product.

Am I disappointed it doesn't have mini-LED and that there are obvious quality control issues that should have been caught before release? Absolutely. But I'm so glad to have a display that makes my design work shine, without the chonky webcam, wires, and clutter. THAT is what I really paid for.

Now that is more like it.

Also the 27 inch and above need 120hz ProMotion or else it's outclassed by gaming monitors at the same size and price range.
Yeah, adding ProMotion would be nice. But I have no idea whether it's an expensive or inexpensive addition, and thus whether it would be reasonable to see it at those prices.

Even if they didn't have ProMotion, I wouldn't say Apple's monitors are outclassed by gaming monitors at the same size and price, because those gaming monitors all have a much lower pixel density. Only if the gaming monitors were also Retina displays would they be outclassed.

Equally, many MR commenters just suck up anything Apple rolls out..

Not any better to be that way either

It is much better.

Apple's job is to produce a product in such a way they want.

Our job as potential customers is to buy it or not. If we don't buy it, we just go away silently without complaint.

Sony has probably made thousands of products in the last 50 years which wasn't for me or I didn't find valuable. I have never complained about a Sony product. Why would I?
