With the 27" having the 2.8ghz i7 option, I wonder why they don't offer an SSD storage option as well. I know they are expensive still, but with the performance of the new iMac, that would have truly made it amazing. I wonder how difficult it will be to open these new bad boys up... ;-)

Hopefully easier than this, though it wasn't that bad: 24" iMac HD Upgrade

I don't think I'll be picking up one just to find out, my MP is serving me quite well these days.

Very beautiful machines, that's for sure! Way to to :apple:!

user upgradeable cpu?

So the upgrade to the i7 2.8 is $200, but you can buy a cpu for around $280. Is it possible to get the i5, then swap out for your own i7, so then you have yourself a discounted i5 to either sell or use in another machine?

Anyone have a clue?

Credit where credit's due... Peace nailed this yesterday during the earnings call.

Okay, nice plug for Peace, but I may have been the first to note the "hints" about new products in yesterday's financial call -- at 5:28PM, almost twenty minutes prior to Peace:

However (full disclosure time), some of my posts over the last week were outright wrong as I was expecting Apple to use the Core i7 Mobile and it appears that the entire line of iMacs are now using desktop parts. This seems to be a departure from the previous iMacs which were widely reported to be using mobile CPUs or unique-to-Apple reduced-power desktop CPUs.

I guess it's possible that the quad-core i7s that Apple will be using are special reduced-power desktop chips (another case of unique parts for Apple?). That may be why they won't ship until November.

I'm liking these new iMacs. I couldn't care less about the lack of Blu-Ray - the way I see it, when Apple's ready to include it, it'll be a BTO option on the Mac Pro first. THEN the iMacs and MacBook family gets it as a BTO option. Finally, the Mac Mini gets one (also a BTO option).

What I like most is the Core i7 option - that thing's going to be a real beast, especially for multi-threaded programs that can take full advantage of the 8 logical cores it offers. The 16 GB RAM option is also welcome, but... boy, is it ever expensive. Sure, 4 GB RAM chips are expensive to begin with, but... sheesh.

For my needs, if I was to order one today, I'd definitely get the 8GB RAM upgrade and the Core i7 upgrade on the top-end 27" model... but since I'm not in the market right now, I'll just enjoy the Intel iMac I have now :D

If I was an iMac person I would be all over this. They look saweet! I work on a 24" iMac and these are what I have always envisioned because I come from working on a cinema display at the house.

These stole the show for me today!!

The answer is NO and yes I am sure. iMacs only have a display port out... Sorry!

Check the specs of the largest model. It does accept video IN.

Mini DisplayPort.

The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display.

You appear to underestimate how difficult it is to take an iMac apart.

//edit. Taking it apart really isn't that hard. It's getting it all back together that is the challenge.

Not easily, if at all. There are a number of adapters that go from DisplayPort (or mini DisplayPort) to DVI, but not the other way around. I vaguely recall seeing a link to one such device (DVI/HDMI to DP) on this forum a few months ago. However, I think it was a rather large box and it was several hundred dollars and there were no reviews from users. So, for all practical purposes, the answer to your question (at least right now) is no.

Can someone pleeeease answer this question for me. I will be eternally grateful and promise to (maybe) raise my kids according to your beliefs, whatever those are. :)

Will it be possible for me to use the 27" iMac as an external monitor (extended desktop) to my MBP (17", santa rosa, June 2007)? Will it be possible to also do this running windows under bootcamp?

Next question: Are you sure?

Thanks!

I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

I think SSD has to come down a bit more in price before Apple makes the switch, but I expect they will do so at some point.

I want one off the top end models, I in no way need one, this Imac does more than I need it to. But I want a new one. :( Oh well at least when I am genuinely ready to update, my next one will be considerably faster, and bigger.

The iMac 27" 3,06 goes for 1 699$ as the old one, and except for all the new changes we get the wireless keyboard plus wireless mouse for free, oh dear god :)

Ok. But what about the high end 21.5 core 2 duo?

depends if the memory controller is in the CPU. AMD has done this for years and people had the most trouble with the super duper gold plated RAM that is supposed to be 3 times faster.

if you bought generic RAM it was OK. and the motherboards had to come out with lists of compatible RAM

i'm thinking about going for the 21.5 core 2 duo 3.06 Ghz

how fast do you think it is ?

is it a good processor ?

I'm going out to buy a 24 inch while I still can

Can't figure out why Apple eliminated the middle of the size range.

I do a lot of word processing, and the 9 x16 format utterly sucks for that. My old 20" 2x3 iMac was a good fit for the vertical dimension I need to see most of a page, but a 21.7 in HD format leaves me with too little room unless I use the zoom to squeeze the page into the smaller vertical space.

A 24" HD format would just about put me back where I was the 20" 2x3, but a 27"?? I'd need a desk the size of an aircraft carrier! Even if this does amount to getting "more" for the same price, when does more become too damn much?

So wait, with display input, this could be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro! Imagine the possibilities. Maybe this IS the new Cinema Display :)
