It has a 2TB option.

Thanks, I corrected my post. I hadn't gone through the whole "buy" to check...

Not true. You can use it as a smallish DisplayPort Monitor when you upgrade to the 16 core iMac in a couple of years. You also can use iChat 3-D with the two built in iSights on both machines. ;)

IFF (If and only IF) you buy the top model. Once again Apple is the master of the upsell - cripple the lower models.

Forget BluRay, watch your BD on your home entertainment systems, it's not needed on your computer.

But what if for some reason I'd like to watch one of my BD movies on my computer? Better get an HP or a Dell or a ....

Sure, iTunes movies in 1080p is not that far away, however you could never compare an iTunes 1080p with Blu-ray seeing as iTunes movies have a waaaaaay lower bit-rate than blu-ray movies.

It's primarily a computer, not a tv.

BluRay licensing is expensive, which features would you remove or downgrade to have had BluRay included?

The option is there if you want to use your iMac as a TV.

Anyone noticed the missing footnote on the Imac's shopping page?

Seriously, I wish people like you would stop telling everyone else what they need or want on their computers.

If Apple offered it as an option, with an optional software driver, it really would have no negative impact on people like you who aren't interested in it whatsoever. It would only offer Apple the ability to make extra profits from people like me who want it, which would be good for all mac users.

You might not need or want Blu-ray support - good for you. For me, it really precludes me from buying a new mac at this point, it's a total farce.

Nice machines otherwise.

Primarily why, because you say so and Apple doesn't give you a choice ? Brilliant.

Expensive ? Why is that a problem with Apple computers ? Hilarious.

No Matte display option? WTF Apple?
My sister has a glossy iMac and the reflections of the widows across the room would drive me nuts.
As for you glossy screen lovers, no need to have a cow. All were are asking for is a BTO option that we will gladly pay for.

Ha ha ha! "My new Mac Pro setup is so posh the monitors are quad-core computers."

Link it as a cluster in Qmaster with the Mac Pro for great justice.

"I shall now submit this batch! ...to the 8 cores in my tower....and the 4 more in my monitor!!!!!!!! BWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

They're very nice, and I would love to buy one, but is there still no On-Site repair package? That has been the main concern for me, as in this case, I have no car and would rather not carry an iMac across London to get it fixed. I've also not had a great experience with Apple authorised third party repairs.

It's really no different from people who demand the inclusion of expensive additions that would needlessly raise the price or downgrade other features because they have BD.

People demanding BD are a noisy minority who don't seem to consider the impact of the additional costs in the inclusion of BD.

If you want BD on your iMac, I'd rather you carry the cost and use the input feature.

o man what a machine

Is there no decent BluRay external on the market?

Is there no decent BluRay external on the market?
Yes, there are plenty of external Blu-ray burners that work natively with OS X and aren't even that expensive (~$200). The new Final Cut Studio even provides the necessary codecs for burning to Blu-ray directly.

Problem is, once you make the disc, Apple won't let you play it.

Looks like a typical refresh. iMacs are still missing decent graphics and bluray. Still need a Windows rig for gaming. I thought luxury products were suppose to be cutting edge?

Blu-ray would have been the icing on the cake. It would have meant editing my HDV on the 27" iMac would have been a delight followed by (an updated) DVDSP burning the output to Blu-Ray.

Why isn't the option there as a BTO?

Perhaps for the next release - at least this keeps my wife happy as I have only had the 24"iMac for just under 24 months!

I live in London and an iMac with AppleCare. Apple send a courier to collect the product and return it when repaired. The two issues have been resolved within five working days.

:(:(:(
Terrible news. Thanks for replying though.

Is it possible to do the other way around, i.e. can my MBP be used as an external monitor?

It looks like Gefen just came out with an adapter for DVI to DP. Unfortunately, it only supports 1920x1200, not enough to drive the new iMac at native resolution. I can't find anything that will accept the required dual-link DVI input required to drive this monitor at 2560x1440.

And in answer to your question, no, your MBP can't be used as an external monitor directly. There are some network based software solutions that will let you drive the display in your MBP via ethernet, but nothing as elegant as connecting a display cable.

You can't make that assumption based on the clock speed. iMacs traditionally sport overclocked mobile parts. The 3.06 of last gen was just an overclocked penryn.

And that overclocked penryn part just turned out to be an retail part that apple got first. I dunno why but you apple kids love to avoid truth in favor of crazy theories about apple's products. They are lynnfields. i5 is w/o hyper threading and i7 is with. The top end core i7 mobile runs at 2.0ghz and costs $1,000. There is no way Apple used that and overclocked it over 800mhz and stuck in the desktop. the 2.8 i7 option is the core i7 860! No conspiracy theories, get a grip.

'Luxury products', if there is a distinction at all, are supposed to be perfected. Perfecting things takes time, therefore luxury products cannot be cutting edge.

I will definitely be buying a 27" Quad as soon as the price drops on eBay, so after the holiday season. Great upgrades and I am really happy with the widescreen and more RAM slots...16GB in the future is awesome.
