Watching the 7 min video introducing the new iMacs, you are aware of how much effort had to be put into photographing the displays in the restricted ways needed to downplay the screen reflections.

Can't shoot it head on, in the way people will use the display, because then people will see the camera doing the filming; always have to be off at a 45 degree or greater angle.

Even then, the narrator intones (as a selling point) the uniform brightness of the screen -- even as a bright line of room reflection sweeps across the screen, washing out half of it ... but they even aligned everything so the room reflection would match the screen wallpaper lines and be less obvious.

The narrator intones how the edge-to-edge screen puts the emphasis on "your content and nothing else" ... as more room reflections wash across the screen, obscuring the its content.

Targeted for people who don't use computers as computers but instead expensive media players, its unusable screen makes this another upgrade to skip for people who use computers as computers -- and Apple knows it since they had to work around it so hard to film their advertisement.

actually I'm sure the screen shots are added in editing, i doubt they are a live screen shot.

interesting update tho i think 27" is too big, but i think it would be a real pleasure for guys to view their secret stash of "videos" :D

The 27 inch would suit people like me I guess. I already have my PC hooked up to a decent-sized LCD tv. Makes for great movie watching =]

Clearly the new line up is a welcome change and fan boys world wide are still wakeing up from the smelling salts but just who is the target audience for these massive all in one machines?

Does the John Doe family from any place USA really go shopping to find little Suzy Q a new 27" iMac just wondering what some of you think. I would have thought a more affordable Mac Book might be annouced or a slight price drop in the Mini would be in line.

Just my two cents but I dont see families on a budget racing in to buy these massive all in one machines, will they sell? of course they will anything Apple but its name on will sell but again who is this really for?

Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just finally got to my Mac here at work and launched Safari just to make sure I wasn't dreaming about yesterday and all the goodness that was bestowed upon us by Apple.....

.... it's still all true. :D

I agree with a few of the posters that the 27-inch is probably too big for the average user, but I know a lot of graphic and page layout artists, website designers and photographers that are going to be looking at their equipment budget to see how soon they can justify buying one.

You are going to bee seeing a lot fewer Mac Pro workstations in the design, advertising and publishing industry studios from now on.

Vats 15%+!?

GST is only 12.5%!.. NZD.

Dayumm!

And in Australia it's 10%. And yet a lot of our Apple products are still way overpriced ($4499 base Mac Pro, anyone?). The computers updated yesterday are amazing value though - can't wait to pick up my 27" for $2199 :D

The 27" imac seems sufficient for my needs actually and i was always a fan of the aluminium enclosure. For its spec it's pretty cheap too! Got a couple of questions though.

1. I have 2x 20" Apple Cinema Displays. Will i be able to connect them both with the dual link dvi to display port adapter??

2. How easy is it to upgrade the ram in these macs?

No matte display!!

Why is there no option to get a matte display? I do NOT buy a new iMac with glossy display, no!!!

Not sure about the first question, but the RAM is really easy to upgrade. Look at this page on the Apple website. You see that section along the bottom of the screen, in the middle below the Apple logo, with the screws on either side? Just unscrew that piece and you can install the new RAM.

Isn't 27" a bit too big?

CNET did a side-by-side comparison of the 27" and the previous generation 24" in their rushed video review yesterday. The 27" isn't much taller than the 24", but it is wider, given the 16x9 ratio. However, the new end-to-end screen makes it appear to be a wash.

Looking at the specs, the 21.5" is actually shorter than the previous 20". It's all about the loss of the chin for both 21.5" and 27" class.

A New Tidbit To Ponder or Argue About

Customer Service. In my 43 years in the computer industry and 25 years in the PC world, no company has the wonderful customer service that Apple has. I've owned or dealt with Dell, HP, Gateway, Toshiba, IBM, COMPAQ and mostly, their customer service sucks, My last high end Dell, out of the box, had problems reading CDs and DVDs (2 different drives, had to open and close seveal times to get them to work). Tried deleting the drivers and re-installing to no avail. I had the 3 year service contract with 1st year 24 hour in home. Dell said I could ship it back to them, DUH! What happened to the 24 hour in home service? Not. BTW, Dell's service is known for being less than satisfactory unless you work for a company with 1,000's of PCs and a service agreement. I was helping a friend fix her Gateway desktop and ended up calling Gateway. The PC came with 256Megs of RAM and XP Pro and Office 2003 (an older PC still under warranty at the time). After explaining the problem, the customer service rep told me the PC did not have enough memory fo XP, WRONG ANSWER. I told her thats what the PC came with and my Gateway laptop came configured the same way and she hung up on me. Called back to a different rep and he told me she never logged the call (company policy). Ended up doing a destructive restore. Have you noticed that seveal companies only allow you to chat online and don't give a phone number? Thats because they cannot speak english well enough for you to understand! When I have had to contact Apple, at the store or customer care, they spoke in understandable ENGLISH and they are always polite! Wow, what a concept. Even if I have to pay a little more I will gladly pay it for the service. Don't have to ship a PC to Dell, HP, etc. I can take it to one of two Apple stores within 20 minutes of my house. I realize I'm lucky to have the stores so close. BTW, I work for a company that has over 70,000 PCs and over 3,000 servers. Our mega service contract still sometimes sucks.

43 years in the computer industry but still don't know how to build your own PC?
