I have an Apple store right nearby and wanted to see if there is any real difference (outside of instant gratification and the joy of paying sales tax) of buying in the store as opposed to on-line. My chief concern is whether you can have any kind of customization done in store that you see on the Web site.

Generally you can only buy stock models in-store.

I am very disappointed, I have waited too long and I need a new laptop. Apple forces me now to buy a PC because I can't wait for another update circle. What a f****** crappy company. Lost a new customer right now!

Nobody's forcing you to buy anything. I'll shed a tear for you though.

I am a DJ, when I upgrade I'll go with a 15" i7 because you're never going to upgrade your processor, and a high res screen. All DJ software runs fine on my 2006 C2D MBP though so it shouldn't matter too much what you get. Things to consider when using a computer for DJing, bigger computer means greater surface area to knock over and spill drinks on. Smaller computer means more difficult to read song names if computer is placed far away from turntables, CDJs, or midi equip.

Thanks a lot!

So, at a least a 15' MBP? As I'll be moving to a Mac computer, which program do you use?

This a very welcome update with overall improvements. But 256mb video memory on the low and mid range 15"??? Seriously?? 512mb should be standard with 1gb option.

I believe the 330M is still 128bit. IIRC, 128bit GPUs can only address 256MB vram efficiently, so anything above would be a waste, I guess. Especially 1GB.

nice work mr

macrumors, congratulations, your credibility is uncanny :)

just for anyone curious about the differences between i5 and i7, here's a good link:

http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/48391.aspx

the most important excerpt from the article for those that lack time:

"In either case, the end result is that no Core i5 products has or will have more than four physical or simulated cores. This means that Core i5 products will not be as quick under heavily multi-threaded work loads as Core i7 products."

(Intel's Core i7 Value: To Buy or Not to Buy?)
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/16982.aspx

personally, i will try for the 4 core i5 in a 17" form factor. my current macbook is the original intel dual core macbook black, it's still running strong, but the 2GB memory limitation really kills me (for vmware and the like) and the fan seems to blow harder and harder these days, but overall a great investment considering i purchased this back in january 2007, apple really provides value though at a premium.

i would have liked to have seen an hdmi output on this revision of the macbooks instead of dvi. <-- first complaint :p

second complaint --> the macbook black included a free mini-dvi to vga cable, airplane dc cable, and remote, now these are all add-ons.

anyway, the long wait is over.

Plus blue Ray has no performance increase. I have yet to see blue Ray look any better than a DVD.

Then you must have only used ****** TVs and ****** sound systems. Find a friend with a nice (and well adjusted / setup) high-end Sony or Samsung at 46" or larger... preferably paired to a nice set of speakers using HDMI to feed it HD audio. There is no way you will be able to deny how great Bluray looks and sounds.

That isn't to say that Bluray _needs_ a high-end setup to be worth it (most people can tell the difference even on middle of the ground equipment)... but if you're having trouble understanding why people like Bluray... you should seek out a place that will show you.

uhhhh.. wtf!? How much are they charging for the 3 yr warranty!!!!!!!!!???????

My eyes are bleeding................

It's step in the right direction but I'm a little disappointed in the 13" MacBook Pro line. The base 2.4 GHz 13" MacBook Pro is a shocking value if you can live with Core 2 Duo compared to the $1,499 model. A higher resolution screen option would be nice. It's good to see that 16:10 is still around. Apple is making some rather bold claims on what is nVidia's technology.

I'll be more interested to see what happens to the 13" MacBook.

haha

From Gizmodo ". To spend as much as $1500 for a Core2Duo system seems nuts"
:(

Yup! Just spend the extra $300 and get the base 15 model. It's a better deal...

GeForce GT 330M is not my thing

It is like the worst macbook update. 13 inch having Core 2 Duo. Jesus, what the hell?

or maybe you should just read ANY article about screen resolution. manufacturers of televisions DON'T make 15" tvs in 1080p for this very reason. Good luck going to a brick and mortar retailer and finding any selection of 15" 1080p tvs.

You typically don't sit 1 foot away from your TV screen either.

this might be a good time to finally update...

Im still running the 1st gen 15" macbook pro...the one with the 1.83 processor =P

With that said, im pretty excited about upgrading. How much better will the performance be between the i5 15" and the i7 15"?

jeepers creepers! people still cant be happy? they have finally released a macbook pro line thats usable in monetary terms.. (i.e you can buy it without feeling stupid) but still, no. i want to complain.. seriously? quick glance over the specs, they look pretty darned impressive, if i had money i'd walk down to the tube station, go straight to regent street n buy a maxxed out 15"..

-1 for all the complainers

If you honestly expected either of those features I'd say you need a serious reality check.

"WTF Apple didn't include a cure for cancer? NO BUY."

Perhaps not those features, but any new useful feature. I just thought that those would be more useful than others. Still the updates are disappointing. The long time wait made me expect something more than just sticking new processors on the logicboard.

Guys can someone answer this question, It probably sounds stupid so sorry if it does. Its just something I dont get.

On my current mbp I can switch to the 9400 from the 9600 to save battery life but reduce graphical performance.

On these new macbook pros today what does the "optimus" switching actually switch too? Is it a 9400? or does it simply underclock the GPU or what? I dont know :S

The GT330M supports the hardware decoding of HD videos using the integrated PureVideo HD engine. The integrated VP4 video processor is able to fully decode H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 ASP (e.g., DivX, xVID). Hardware decoding of MPEG-1 encoded videos is not supported, but this can be handled by every CPU without high load. In conjunction with an Core i5-520M, the GT 330M decoded H.264 with 1-6%, VC1 in 5-10%, and WMV with 3-9% CPU load.

Of course the 'Hardware' supports this, 3 year old Nvidia stuff has, but Apple DON'T support this in their basic assed drivers!!!!!!!!!!

Spend some of that 50 billion Apple you tight ass's and hire more engineers!!

Nice update. I would have expected at least an i3 in the 13" though. Maybe Apple will update that when they do the MacBooks to the same processor, to maintain their economies of scale.

Also, the option to increase the screen resolution to 1680x1050 is a very nice addition

There is no mobile i3 processor, so you couldn't possibly get a 13" with an i3 processor. The lowest mobile iSomething processor is the i5-520 which is used in some 15" MBPs.
