I've asked this before but never really heard an explanation - what is the method that is used to update the firmware on the MagSafe charger puck? I understand you can plug them into a Mac and they will update. That makes sense to me. But presumably they can still update themselves while only connected to the wall via a power brick and attached to an iPhone. How does this work? Some kind of wireless communication? What is the protocol?

Well, mine is plugged into a Mac, and it isn't doing anything - over an hour now.

Pretty sure it’s NFC.

Is it just the stand alone charger or did the MagSafe Duo also get an update?

A charger has firmware?
Yes, non-trivial chargers might. This one supports USB PD, which requires some logic, as well as inductive charging, which also does.

I’m convinced firmware updates are nothing more than apple relaying data on how you use your product back to HQ.
But is that from reading tea leaves or some actual evidence or just a feeling?

Must EVERYTHING contain a chip now?
If it supports USB PD, certainly. If it supports Qi also certainly.

i gave it one last try since last time it never updated. but now connected to my macbook i guess 20 minutes. i suddenly saw a pop up again to give the device permission to connect. which made me think hey finally something happened. and then i put on my phone to check the firmware version now its 0.0.2.58 for me but when i checked a minute later it now shows 258.0.0.0

What could possibly need updating? It just changes that’s it, what bugs has anyone had with it lol
Odd to see people on a tech forum that don't know that USB C cables have chips in them. More in the charger.

Any idea how to check firmware for the USBC to MagSafe 3 cable?

I've gone into System Info > Power, but all I see is the firmware for the power brick, not the cable.
