Apple Releases Updated MagSafe Charger Firmware

My Duo says 256.0.0.0.
Just updated to 0.0.2.56. Seems like the firmware updates have to go in order, unlike software updates.

Edit: I'm dumb, I was looking at my modem firmware this entire time which is 2.55.00, hence the confusion.

We have two MagSafe chargers. iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro were on them the whole night and neither updated.

I don't care really but I am somewhat intrigued by how - and if - those things do update without plugging them into a Mac.

I've never tried but I read somewhere in a thread I can't find that they are able to update like that, but it can take a few days. Another method to try (if you don't own a mac) would be plugging the charger directly into an iphone/ipad.

I have two chargers. Last time when there was an update, I plugged one of them into my Mac and it updated right away. I left the other one alone to see how long it would take to update itself. I've left my phone on it every night, and it still didn't update after a month. I finally gave up and plugged that one into my Mac too. I wonder what the special trick is to do it wirelessly. Maybe a month wasn't a long enough wait? Is it even confirmed to work this way?

You can also plug the charger into a USB-C iPad to update it. I just did that to one of mine. I think I'll leave the other one alone again to see if it'll ever update on its own.

The extra weird thing is people will say they have multiples but only one will update through regular use. Same with Airtags.

They do update without macs

They do! I updated my 2 mag safe chargers without Macs. takes little and they updated.

Yeah I don't think the update applies to the Duo. I've been on 256 version since the last update earlier this year (which updated instantaneously upon connection to my desktop Mac). I connected two of my Duos since yesterday and no update.

Yup my mistake, I was on older firmware (186).

Is it possible the apple watch chargers have firmware as well? 4 of us in my household have had issues overnight in the last week where our watches (S3, S3, S4 and S6) have all randomly not charged. Never happened before.

for some odd reason I need to plug it into my mbp twice. then place and remove my iPhone a couple of times until it shows: 258.0.0.0. boo! Why so difficult?

I plugged my MagSafe charger into my MBA for 30 minutes. No update.
I plugged it into my 2nd Gen iPad Pro for 15 minutes. No update.
I charged my iPhone 14 Pro using the charger for 15 minutes. No update.

In summary:
We don't know what the firmware update does.
We can't force install the firmware update.

It's sort of a quantum update. You don't know where it is, and if you look for it you almost certainly won't find it.

Good thinking! Plugged my USB-C watch charger into my MacBook and it was version 19.10 then I connected my watch to it, unplugged it and reconnected and now it’s 21.30!

Edit: USB-A watch charging cable is version 2.00 and remained that after the same process.

Does anyone else's updated charger still display as firmware 0.0.2.58 after being plugged in? It seems like after like 30 seconds it pulls additional hardware info and updates to show the correct 258.0.0.0 but that's not what I'm seeing right away.

Mine still shows 0.0.2.58 24 hours later.

Edit: Nvm it just changed as I typed this lol

It seems to change when it pulls in additional hardware info like the serial number of the MagSafe unit, then it has 5 rows instead of 3 and shows the correct 258.0.0.0.

But if you detach it and reattach it, it goes back to 0.0.2.58 for a little bit again.

Strange 🤷🏻‍♂️
