I’m convinced firmware updates are nothing more than apple relaying data on how you use your product back to HQ.

no no nothing that nefarious.

They'll simply make older, perfectly capable chargers ineffective over time. "what's that? your 4 year old magsafe charger doesn't support the newest firmware? sorry you're going to be downgraded to 0.5w trickle charging"
Planned obsolescence, not nefarious just greedy.

Updated, safari seems snappier.

Regarding the tweet above... Plugged my Mac's Magsafe cable into the Mac using the USB-C side and I didn't see it in System Report. Still curious how that firmware version is viewed, it doesn't show up in the "Power" section either.

Replies on Twitter say Power --> AC Charger Information --> Firmware... but that doesn't say anything about the cable. Seems like it's displaying the firmware of the power brick itself.
Yes, You are right, I did not get it on my Mac this time.

But you can put your iPhone on MagSafe charger during you connect it to Mac. Then from iPhone go to Settings-Genral- About- MagSafe charger Adapter. You can find their th firmware info.

I cannot seem to get mine to update. Rather frustrating, probably me doing something incorrect. I am still on 247.0.0.0 - wish Apple would give us a way to manually pull the update down and install it.

Have had it plugged into my MBP for the past 2+ hours.... Still nada.
I found I had to plug and unplug from the Mac a few times. Both chargers I updated I needed to see the "connect to accessory" pop up twice before it finally worked.

Exact same thing here. Have had it plugged into my MBP 14" for a while now, unplug, replug, nothing. Just 247.0.0.0

Two are or have updated to 258. newest 3 hours. The Sister who has one finally updated to 255. This update seems to have fixed the update problem. No Mac, just a stand-alone update. Seems Macs are getting less important in these firmware updates.

This update seems not to be willing to install... When plugging in to mac, is it OK to keep iPhone also attached to MagSafe charger or will it prevent the update?

plugged into the Mac for 4 hours. Nothing. Charged an iPhone on it for 4 hours. Nothing.

Then found this article: https://www.iphonetricks.org/magsafe-charger-firmware-update-review/#:~:text=MagSafe Firmware Not Updating?,unlocked the firmware 255 update.

It says take the phone out the case (I have an Apple MagSafe case) and it updated in a matter of 1.5 seconds.

Hope it helps others.
I have an Apple Mag safe case and don't need to remove it. Mine updated without a Mac or took 3 hours at most. The case has nothing to do with this. This is another assumption etc. 1.5 sec? that alone seems to be too perfect to believe.

My MagSafe is still on 247.0.0.0. I actually forgot all about it until the update. I connected it to my iPad Pro 5th Gen, and it doesn’t recognize it as connected or my phone on it. How are others getting the update via iPad USB-C connection if it’s not being recognized?

I have two MagSafe chargers still on 247.0.0.0. None of the tricks work: leaving it charging to the phone overnight for multiple nights in a row, leaving it attached to the phone all day, plugging into an iPad with a USB-C port, making sure the phone is at 100% charge with a lightning cable before attaching the MagSafe, taking the phone case off, etc, etc. But yet two others of mine *did* update. It's voodoo. No idea why the MagSafe decides to update, how to get it to initiate, or what the update even does.

Can the EU make a new rule about fixing this moronic update process, pretty please?

Exactly, it should be not automatic “some day it will update” but instead device this cable / powerbank / AirPods should have pop up to confirm it.

Having devices which are automatically updating and possibly nerfing their abilities (I.e. ANC in AirPods Max) is not owning a device but borrowing it being always in risk of it being bricked out of sudden… Totally agree with you there!

I just bought my first Apple branded MagSafe charger from Amazon. Took it out of the box, plugged it into my MacBook, put the phone on the charger and opened the Settings app. About showed Apple MagSafe Charger (glad it know it is genuine and not a knockoff since I got it for a discount through Amazon). Opened the charger settings and was happy to see that it's already Firmware Version 258.0.0! Was kinda surprised, either it updated immediately or it shipped with that firmware because I ordered it from Amazon last night and it was here about 16 hours later. Anyway, just thought I would share my experience. I feel like I have so much to learn with all the firmware updates that I never even thought of!

Very rarely use MagSafe to charge my iPhone. Tried it after reading this thread and I got this lol. First time ever getting this message.

I turned off my DNS ad block thing, reverting it to the default one. Plugged it into my MacBook Air (which was also charging) a few times, got the accessory pop up on my Mac twice. After the second pop up, it updated within a few seconds.
