For all you "Go-bots", this has nothing to do with Android. Apple is simply reiterating their design philosophy. "This is what we believe" is far more than marketing alone, and presents unparalled confidence in what they are successfully trying to achieve.

Well, with a little help from Microsoft.

Yes, Microsoft did help.

MS helped Apple because Apple had them over a barrel. MS, as usual in those days, was caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Caught with Apple's Quicktime code. Before they stole that, movies and other video wouldn't play properly in Windows. They would be jerky from frame to frame.

Apple threatened to sue.

They came to a settlement in which Apple and MS would share patents in various bits of software, and also that MS would buy $150,000,000 in non voting Apple stock and announce support for Apple by continuing development of Office for at least 5 years.

This wasn't done out of the goodness of Gates' heart. Apple in effect used extortion on MS due to the latter's patent infringements. It was in Billy's best interest to play Apple's game or face worse penalties.

Having been there at Apple and NeXT the real situation was the $10 Billion law suit would serving neither company well.

Steve's first move as iCEO was to have a face-to-face not with Bill, but with a senior exec to broker a deal that included that $150 Million non-voting investment and 4 major releases of Office.

By the time Apple introduced the iPod Microsoft thought they would eventually no longer need to continue releasing for the Mac. After one year, it was clear that Microsoft's Mac department was making them a handsome profit and Apple was owning a new market.

Then the iPhone and iPod Touch arrived and the time for Microsoft to strategically cancel MS Office would have brought the FCC and the SEC into another investigation for being a publicly traded corporation you cannot justify canceling one of your biggest cash cows simply because you can't compete with your competition in other markets.

Such a great ad.

They should have done something like this and not the "well you don't have an iPhone" ad.

I like both as...I like the smart- ass angle of the iPhone ad, but I like the iPad ad a lot, too.:D

Yeah great, it's very wonderful.

Now try to take some video on your mac and get it onto your magical thousand dollar iPad2 for use in iMovie. Try to work on a song you created in Garageband on your mac in Garageband on the iPad2.

What's that? A BIG OL CLUSTERBANG OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE WAY!!!

Correct, I love my iPad one, but getting files on and off it is a pain. I was hoping the new iteration of iPad would solve this problem, still hoping it will with new software. Frankly, a USB slot would be great. I don't want rely on Dropbox or adapters to move files that can't be emailed.

And, yes the toaster analogy is perfect. The iPad is not a laptop, this is the best thing you can say about it, not a criticism. It extends my deskop (currently a laptop) so I don't have to carry it around. And, lordy, it does that well. As soon as it can run complex keynote files to my satisfaction, it will truly be a magical device and I will never buy another laptop.

This ad will never work. People want ads that make them feel like teenage boys. I know this from Android ads. Steel and lasers, Apple. Steel and lasers!

Why so many people were using "will never" against Apple. This company creates products on groundbreaking principles. And most products are successful so far...i wonder how many times in your life that "never" word proves you right.

Shhh, let them cling to their fantasy that Microsoft is the benevolent dictator that allowed Apple's survival.

i liked it up til the part where "magic" was mentioned.. it just sounded cheesy

at least it's not like those pretentious iphone ads

Nice, yet vain, attempt at backpedaling. Keep trying.
What am I backpedaling on? Have you run out of rebuttals?

You implied that everyone had scratches dents, panel bleed and other blemishes and I challenged you on it.

I also suggested that some people might be getting returns as "new" if they buy from less reputable third party dealers.

If these issues were widespread on direct from the factory iPad then we should have seen stories in the mainstream media.

There probably are some units out there with LCD light bleed but the scratching and denting are the result of either getting a return or inflicted by the owners themselves from over zealous use without a case.

So the iPad saved him? So much for giving the medical staff their due. LOL!

No the iPad did not save him. I AM part of his medical staff. It has given him a better quality of life and the difference in his personality and mood since getting his iPad is 'magical'.

So does your definition of doing something 'useful' only refer to things that saves lives?

I like the commercial. Simple, to the point, concise. It not only showed off the iPad, but also brought in a more human element to using it. Instead of being a cold piece of metal and glass, they found a way to make it seem like much more. THAT is what good marketing should do. I like this ad, works for me. And like most Apple ads, when one comes on that you haven't seen, everyone seems to quiet down and watch.

I found that his ad speaks directly to why I like using the iPhone/iPad interface is because my eyes aren't being assaulted with 40 different things screaming out for my attention. The interface is simple, organized and easy to use. But that's just me. I like things simple.
