I have a friend who owns an iPhone SE and refuses to update to anything over iOS 10. I'm not sure what version they're exactly on, but I believe it's the last version of iOS 10. (so 10.3.3?). Will this affect them? Or can they continue using their phone without any issues?
It won't affect the SE, the Apple website says "This issue does not affect iPod touch or any iPad models that have Wi-Fi only. It also doesn't affect iOS devices newer than those listed above." (aka iPhone 4s and 5)

[stares at ancient iPod sitting in a speakerdock upstairs with audiobooks loaded on it]

Haven't turned the WiFi on on that device for about six years...

Think it's running iOS 3.1. Zillion audiobooks on it. I keep falling asleep and having to rewind the one that's currently up to bat. Think I've rewound Chapter 3 on that one about 20 times this month.

Not gonna do nada with that iPod's software except wipe the device when I replace the speakerdock with something that likes iPhone XR a whole lot better.

Macrumors had an article about this on July 22, 2019.

Thanks for that, but notification isn’t my point. iOS 13.1.4 isn’t out yet, at least not for me, and we have only a week to install it before there are adverse consequences. Time to deploy, Apple.

Edit: Holy crap, I’ve been thinking of 13.1.4, while this is all about 10.1.4. I’ll just face palm myself and move on. And I’m leaving my posts up to show that I’ll own a dumb error.

I have an old 5S which is unable to upgrade to ios13, because it isn’t supported is that correct?

just trying to reconcile that with this post.
Yes this update is for 4s and 5. Your 5s has newer hardware and doesn’t require updating.

12.4.2 is the most recent version of iOS for 5s, but over the next few years a 12.4.3 could very well be released to address security or other issues.

Apple has started advising iPhone 5 owners to update to iOS 10.3.4 before November 3, otherwise several key functions like iCloud and the App Store will no longer work on their device because of a time rollover issue.

Apple-iPhone-5-white.jpg

Back in July, Apple released updated versions of iOS for older iPhones and iPads models, including the iPhone 5, to address an issue that could impact GPS location performance and lead to the system date and time being incorrect. The GPS time rollover issue began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019, but Apple's affected devices aren't impacted by the problem until just before midnight UTC on November 3, 2019.

For iPhone 5 and the fourth-generation iPad with Wi-Fi and Cellular, the 10.3.4 update is required to maintain accurate GPS location and to continue to use functions that rely on correct date and time including App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing. An iOS 9.3.6 update is available for the also-affected iPhone 4s and cellular models of the original iPad mini, the iPad 2, and the iPad 3.

From Apple's support document:
If iPhone 5 models in particular are not updated by November 3, 2019, Apple says users will have to back up and restore using a Mac or PC in order to update, because over-the-air software updates and iCloud Backup will not work.

If you have an iPhone 5, check to make sure your device has updated successfully by following these steps.
  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone 5.
  2. Tap General -> About.
  3. Look for the number next to Software Version.
The updated software version should be 10.3.4.

Ah, thanks for the info!
Cool, my old iPad Mini is wifi only- thanks

Wow!! So this is a hard slap in the face to those on here constantly proclaiming Apple ‘never forces you to update’... well here’s the factual evidence they do..

And to those on here proclaiming how good it is off Apple to support its old products... well NO, if you read the story the forces update is to FIX a fault THEY made with its so software! That’s a lot different to offering support for older devices..

I have a brand new iPhone 6s plus 128 GB on ios 9.3.3. I presume that will be ok. I intend to keep it as a collectible as I believe the iPhone 6 with ios 9 was the best of apple's renditions. It was the final iPhone that was snappy along with the headphone jack.

Not when the issue is pure lazy programming on Apple's part. GPS rollover is caused by an ambiguity in date with period 19.7 years.

A very simple way to avoid this problem is simply to set the earliest date possible to the compile date of the firmware. The iPhone 5 came out in late 2012, so with a very simple check, it shouldn't have this issue until 2031 at minimum. All somebody needed to do is hard code in that the date is never earlier than 1/1/2012, and to add 1024 weeks if you hit that check.

And that's the stupid simple way. The right way is to keep a running counter of the last received date stored. If you do that, you only have the issue if the device is left powered off for more than 19.7 years.

That's fine when implementing GPS is the primary function of your device, but it's really just one issue among thousands to consider when building iOS.

Who cares! Let me guess, you still have a VHS, and you have been forced to upgrade to DVD’s. It’s 2019 welcome. Those phones are like 7 years old

So are you one of those on here they proclaims Apple ‘never forced you to update’ then?
And if it makes your smooth iPhone suddenly run like a Sinclair Spectrum then I’d imagine iPhone 5 owners would care.....!!!

I know you are hoping to receive passionate response to your post and I will leave that for someone else.

The GPS Week Number Rollover was far more widespread than a few Apple models.

Yes. That's literally one of the things updates do.

(How do you expect to fix a fault without an update? Magic?)

I just reset my old iPhone 5 (running iOS 8.something from memory) the other day for the purpose of completely some old Xbox live enabled iOS games.

I can’t update or the titles will stop working.

Will I still be able use the phone and these apps after Nov 3?
It needs internet access to pop the in game achievements.

I think it's WRONG of Apple to set such a tight deadling for upgrading. WHY? Because it's clear that many people still relying on an outdated iPhone 5 as a primary phone are not tech-savvy at all. Sure there are exceptions, but in general we're probably talking about people who likely have never heard of MacRumors, the old aunties and grandmas that still think their ancient iPhone is "fine just the way it is".

Apple needs to be more lenient and more generous with giving these people a longer deadline. Perhaps one of their nerdy grandsons or nephews will catch news of the Apple upgrade deadline, and then do it for them before it's too late. But again, Apple should extend the deadline. Would it hurt Apple to extend the deadline? No.

GPS is the primary method of synchronizing date and time on iOS. Due to TLS/SSL all secure communications rely on proper date. Therefore, proper GPS date operation is not primary, but a critical function. They must spend extra care on it.

Of course, you can see they don't. It's not user-facing or something they can sell, so it gets ignored in today's Apple.

To support hardware like this that is so old is very generous when you think about it.
Planned obsolescence. The iPhone 5 shipped with iOS 6. No one in their right mind would ever move off of that. They’re breaking functionality for your phone on purpose so they slow down the phone by forcing users on to iOS 10. Despicable!

#1- the GPS problem is it entirely Apple’s fault

#2- this update came out months ago!
