And you don’t have to travel that far to be inconvenienced: Mexico’s largest carrier, Telcel, still doesn’t support eSIM for the iphone (they only support it for the MotoRazr), it being the only one of Mexico’s big 3 carriers (Telcel, AT&T and Movistar) not to support it.
Precisely why this:
This does two things:

1. Pushes non-US carriers to adopt eSim ASAP, as they know it's becoming mandatory to use for iPhones going forward, and they don't want iPhone users to not be able to use their networks, given the importance of the iPhone use on their networks.

2. More apps to easily/quickly set-up eSims globally. I've travelled and downloaded local carrier apps in order to buy & set-up an eSim without even having to go to a store, so they exist already – e.g. the US carrier T-Mobile I did back in 2019 in NYC (I'm in UK).

So really, looking at the bigger picture – in the short-term, a year of pain for US users who cannot use the physical options abroad, but in the longterm, eSim adoption becomes the global norm. And you'll either download an app to sign-up for a local esim service or pay for a non-plastic plain piece of card with a code on it to get a local esim service.

Apple will take a percentage of all eSIM activations? What are you talking about. A carrier doesn’t even need to be an Apple partner to support eSIM. They can just follow the GSMA standard and issue QR codes.

Also my carrier, an Apple partner, doesn’t charge anything for eSIM no matter how many times I change devices.
Awesome! May I ask: what's your carrier that does not charge for switching eSIM to different devices?

When Sprint and VZW were full-on CDMA, there was no SIM cards. IMEI transfers were a simple scan and execute. We kind of went backwards with SIM in the US when that was depreciated for LTE.

Also iPhone 14 supports dual-SIM. The way TM works is say you came from another country, you just download a prepaid Tmobile eSIM app in the store and sign up right in the app. No need to find some 7-11.

Not quite. Afaik when carriers in the US didn’t use SIMs they also were the only ones selling handsets either directly to the public or through authorized dealers. That meant a carrier would usually refuse to activate service on any handset not purchased from that carrier. Also, unlocked phones did not exist at the time, all phones were carrier locked.

do you need at least mobile service to use the app?

Just back from Morocco, T-mobile data is very slow, almost unless.
Yes, you are right. Perhaps the satellite connectivity could be used to activate the eSIM for phones not on wifi.

The only good thing I can think of out of this is that other countries have to adapt eSIM tech as fast as they can.

I know of one that won’t: China. The Chinese government forbids the use of eSIMs, which is why apple had to sell a dual-physical-sim iphone there, and will likely continue to do so for years.

Many MVNOs still don't support eSIM - and additionally, eSIM is limited to one line in concurrent use. Does the 14 allow 2 eSIM lines to be used concurrently?

iPhone 13 allows two eSIMs to run at one time if you disable the physical SIM so yes, iPhone 14 definitely does.

Someone please help clarifying this to me, my sister lives in US and she plans on bringing me iphone 14 pro, we have esim available here that gets activated by QR(and is mentioned on the apple us esim page)in my country, but will I be able to activate the phone here and use it as a normal sim?

I got confused with apple’s page saying “before travelling, activate an esim for the destination country“ or something on the product page, and people here talking about temporary sims, I want to use the esim I activate here permanently like a normal phone, is it alright?

Ooredoo Qatar. That’s where I live right now. All I have to do is delete my current eSIM and scan the QR code again. The QR code I get is unique to my line and just my line so nothing needs to be done on their end.

In the US I use Visible. Transferring eSIM is definitely not as convenient on it but I don’t need to visit any stores either. Just contact their chat and have them issue a new eSIM. Free of charge.

Not going to happen. Satellite comms won’t carry data. That alone has a very expensive charge and will require a really good signal. Apple already says without foliage a text could take up to 15 minutes to send for SOS.

Lol, probably not US-based. Major US carriers tend to nickel and dime you for everything.

The 3 major ones won’t charge you to transfer to a newer iPhone even if not bought from them. They have integrated the auto eSIM transfer option available in iOS 16.

But you are correct, it is not in the US. In the US I use Visible and they too don’t charge for it. Not for first time or for transfers.

If your carrier offers eSIM and you can get one then there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from using the phone. The US model supports more bands than every other iPhone.

I think we should file a lawsuit, this is complete garbage. Some palms got greased and now we have to pay for service swaps that used to be free. If there is a CA suit, I'm so in.

That will mean more stock available to Americans in the next few months at US retailers. I think eventually iPhones sold in Europe will lose the SIM card tray as well.
Outside of maybe the first couple weeks there are never shortages of iPhones. More stock available to Americans?! TF

Doesn’t this make selling/buying a phone second-hand problematic? You need to swap your old SIM into the new phone so you keep your phone number.
Not at all. In fact, Apple has eSIM transfer available (in iOS 15) where you can easily transfer your existing line from your old phone to your new one. They just have to be on the same AppleID, and your carrier has to support it... AT&T does for one.

Note this means that you don't even have to call the carrier or go into a store. Try that with a physical SIM.

I just went out and bought the iphone 13 Pro Max. It was $100 off starting today. Saved a few bucks over the 14 but I needed the unlocked phone with a sim card tray. Apple will lose lots of people who wanted the 14.

Have Apple ever landed a class action before a product has been released? We're in uncharted territory here

File a lawsuit? Lol. That’s funny. No one is forcing you to go the phone. Not this one or even any of the future ones.

it's not funny, we now are being forced to pay a carrier for something we could do ourselves. Not everyone is willing to be forced to pay 40-50 bucks for literally nothing. get over yourself.

Very strange. The very fact that they are keeping a SIM tray in some countries means they have the space for it.
