One, we have no idea if a 5.5" phone is in the cards and two, even if it is this story seems highly questionable. Apple has enough experience with batteries to know what the limitations are in terms of device thickness. And why does this story only reference the 5.5" model? One would assume if there are two devices in the pipeline the physical design would be the same (aside from screen size) like the iPads.

I never claimed the 5.5" iPhone was a reality or even in the pipeline. I merely stated my opinion on the conjecture of one.

Sigh, I've had enough of "it's thin enough already" comments.

If the industry had listened to you guys we'd all still have 25mm thick phones instead of the < 8mm we have today.

As soon as you pick up an iPhone Air when it's released you'll change your minds, just like you have done every other year since 2007.

This.

If it's true, that's too bad as I'd like to try both before using my upgrade later this year.

This story doesn't sit well with me. Why would they need a 2mm battery? For instance, inside the iPad it's just a big battery with the parts that actually run the thing shoved in a corner. I would think if the new iPhone is 6mm thick they could do something similar. Unless they're going ridiculously thin. In which case I'll have to constantly wear leather gloves so I don't cut myself.

So far the leaks aren't impressing me, much like the iPhone 5S which is the first iPhone I've skipped. Sure I'll upgrade to the 6 because I'm due for an upgrade so it won't cost very much. But really, what else can you do with the smart phone form factor at this point? Either the pace of technology is finally stalling out, or we're about to make a huge jump to something else.

I guess we have to ask ourselves is what is the endgame here? I guess if we want phones that fold up like sheets of paper then we have to continue this march to thinness. Or is something like that even usable? In the future will GUI even exist? I'm not so sure. Will future generations wonder why we even had to use external devices at all? The trend is simplification. Remove the need for a layer between information and the brain. Will we just be able to search for something by thinking it, and have that information instantly available in our brain without having to read it? The human brain is an untapped resource with massive storage and processing capability. Will the internet of the future be localized to each person—their interests, skills needed for their job, etc—making each person essentially a server that holds a fraction, and yet significant portion of all human knowledge? If others need to access new information, would they just tap into the human cloud network and have anything instantly available? That's the kind of fringe future thinking that is all at once terrifying and exciting. I enjoy entertaining the benefits, but am horrified by the potential consequences. The progressive side of me that wants access to near infinite knowledge loves it, but the conservative side of me that is afraid of hacking, government intrusions, and corporations being able to further invade my privacy hates it. And will we end up with two classes of human in the far future—one who is augmented, the other who is all natural?

Well that got out of hand quickly. iPhone 6: Thin and fancy. Neat. :D

it's been delayed due to manufacturing/battery/screen issues....

The rumour mill spouted the exact same thing about the Retina iPad Mini last year too ....

That turned out to be inaccurate and the retina iPad mini was released, therefore I see no reason to give this rumour much more credence.

iPhone Air, now with Wireless Charging? Not that fake "your charging pad still has a wire" wireless, but true, set it down within 30ft of the charging station and it charges.

Well, then I hope they will skip the 6s and release an even more upgraded 5.5" for 2015. . . If they release the 4.7" and then 6 months later an inbetween product before the iphone 6s Im gonna be very annoyed....since Apple don´t inform anyone what is going on.

Also, yet again, production issues and delays. Great Job Tim, you really stand by those "we have a ton of new and great products for this year" statements... :( Unless Apple does another Christmas barf!
Where are we, may is in a week, not a single product as of yet and nothing to show for and all we read about is delays. If all we will see ad WWDC is some speedbumped laptops and then the 4.7" iphone later this year, though impossible to get by because of low yields (at least in my country), I´m wondering what´s going on in Cupertino ....too focused on holidays maybe...spending those cash?

And if they made it thicker and heavier it would still sell by the tens of millions. No matter what they do it will sell in record numbers. More expensive, bigger, heavier, less battery, etc, it will sell.

So Apple designed a phone w/o considering the reality of battery technology? This story doesn't seem credible.
Apple is infamous for pushing the boundaries on tech. Could be that estimations about availability have been too optimistic (e.g. on supplier side).

I wonder about something else: Why would the bigger iPhone have a protruding camera unit where the smaller iPhone wouldn't? Will the bigger phone actually be _slimmer_ than its smaller sibling or will it sport different tech (e.g. better sensor, lens mount etc.)?

Apple could make an iPhone Air and a thicker iPhone Earth, with three times the battery life. Then, let the consumer decide.

This will be Apple's biggest & fastest selling iPhone yet!
And why do I say that?
Because at 5 1/2 inches, that's a phablet, my fine feathered freinds!
A true Apple mini, pocket computer that isn't too small.
Big enough to be free & open & comfortable with
yet still small enough to be generously spaciously pocketable.

And because of that, it makes even me wanna buy one
and I've never thought about buying a smartphone before!
I'll wager there's a ton of other people out there who think the same way.
That's why this will be Apple's most successful phone ever!

And regarding the thickness/battery life thing, I mean, do people know how small a bloody millimeter is?!?
It's a ONE THOSANDTH of a meter, that's how small it is.
Imagine something around 3 feet long.
Now cut it into A THOUSAND pieces.
That's a millimeter.

Now imagine just adding TWO of those pieces in "thickness" to the casing of an Apple iPhone smartphone.
Practically negligible, right?
You don't even, practically speaking, physically percieve it in terms of weight & "thickness".
Yet it would increase battery life usage by 2 or maybe even 3 times!

Now, wouldn't you like to have that done in exchange for 2 or even 3 times, maybe, the battery life usage?
Of course you would.

Delayed right up there with the 13" iPad Pro with detachable keyboard and HDTV set.

I knew this was coming. First, an unreliable source claims that Product X is coming. Then, after a suitable interval, claim that Product X is delayed for some reason or another. Continue claiming further delays until eventually people stop hitting your website.

Why anyone around here falls for it is a wonder to me.

By "June" you mean WWDC and "something" you mean more than just software, right?

I'm just excited to see next gen iOS and OSX but new hardware would be great too :)

I want to see software that matters. Not another 3 icons or another 3 stock apps that I can't get rid of or even hide, leaving my home screen further and further cluttered with each release. Fix your bloody API's and create new ones that give users choices.

- Allow apps to talk to each other
- Allow us to save shortcuts to files we are working on, on our home screen
- Allow us to create folders and put said files we are working on together so that we can keep all of our files for a particular project organized together
- Allow us to set default apps for browsers or mail or maps or you name it, so it doesn't default to the Apple stock app if that's not our app of choice for that task
- Allow us to have some sort of glanceable information. Maybe not full blown widgets on your home screen if that's not your thing Apple or if you think it will look like you're taking more from Android than you already are with things like notification center. But seriously 'widgets' were your thing first Apple. Dashboard... remember that? Give us a dashboard for us to put important pieces of information on.
- Allow us choices with the keyboard. iOS keyboard while it was good for what it was back in the first few years, it really hasn't grown much and the correction just plain sucks. Also many people have found swiping faster and more efficient... Give us options please.

So you'd rather have a few MMs thinner vs the possibility of having a few hours more of battery life.

Ok.

Personally, I'd rather have the battery life.

I want a device that get's me through the day from early morning till late on the evening, that's it. When I go to bed, my phone goes on charging station. I have external battery charger pack for when I am camping or away on mountains that can charge the phone up to 4 times. What am saying is that I never have battery issues so I would welcome eve thinner phone.

Trust me if they go under 7mm thin, they must go ipod touch style, because otherwise will be almost impossible to grab from the table

Am I the only person who doesn't want a thinner phone, even if it doesn't reduce the battery life?

I was happy with my iPhone 4, the weight, aesthetics etc. Now I couldn't tell you how many times I've skipped a heartbeat thinking my iPhone 5 wasn't in my pocket.

I hope they increase the weight and make it more comfortable to hold (curved edges).

^^^^. Stop making the darned phones so thin and beef up the battery life. An iPhone that you could use moderately for 2-3 days with having to use a charging case would be amazing.
I really don't understand the complaints about the iPhone's battery.

If you have all your push notifications on, push e-mail, bluetooth and wifi always on, and mid-high to high screen brightness, then yeah, you're going to have battery issues. If you want to make the battery last longer, switch to fetch e-mail, turn off most app notifications, turn off bluetooth, wifi and location services when you aren't using them, and turn down the brightness. All of a sudden, your battery WILL last you 2-3 days of moderate use.

At the same time, how often are people going 2-3 days without being near a power source? I basically use one charger for my phone and two iPads at home, and yet all my devices stay charged -- I can usually start the day with 90+% battery on all three devices.

I'm sure there are some situations where people may go long periods of time without having a power source available, but 2-3+ days on a regular basis? Those situations have to be few and far between.

I think the 5.5 timing is better for early next year.
Lets put it this way. Apple is always struggling to meet demand for their flagship phone, which will be the 4.7 this year. It makes sense to stagger the release for early next year as any potential supply issues for the 4.7 have been ironed out.

A release for the 5.5 makes more sense then, and can also take the air out Samsung’s yearly jumbo Galaxy phone which is usually also released at this time.

No way this is true. If they can find a battery that is the same thickness for the 4.7" then its not going to be an issue for the larger model. Clearly they will make them both the same thickness, and since all the components would be expected to be the same other than the display, and the display is expected to have the same PPI, there would be no reason to expect that a battery would be OK for the 4.7" model and not the 5.5" model

Battery life is a very valid complaint.

Its more convenient not to have to charge your phone's battery every day. I shouldn't have to turn off every setting to get more than one day battery life, when a larger battery would suffice, at the "expense" of a slightly thicker phone.

I really don't understand the complaints about the iPhone's battery.

Just turn off the stuff you don't use. Only takes 2 minutes and there's no reason not to really. Here's a few things you can try:

1. Disable location and background app refresh for Facebook (FB in particular is a massive drain when that's turned on)

2. Disable background app refresh for apps you don't care about

3. Turn off parallax (Settings/General/Accessibility/Turn Reduce Motion ON)

4. Turn off everything you don't use Spotlight to search for (Settings/General/Spotlight Search/Untick everything you don't use it for)

5. Turn off Documents & Data under iCloud settings for unimportant apps (Settings/iCloud/Documents & Data/Untick all unimportant apps. If there are no important apps here at all turn off the master switch)

6. Delete all apps/games you don't use

7. Delete all music/podcasts you're not going to listen to

8. Keep your screen brightness as low as you can

And then do a hard reset (Hold down power button, switch off iPhone and turn back on again). That will boost your battery life and your phone's performance.

You're welcome ;)

This sounds so ridiculous. It's like that time when Phil Schiller said: "Oh yeah, the iPod touch is so thin, we couldn't fit an ambient light sensor into it."

What about... make the device 0.5 mm thicker - and give it some great battery life.

Exactly. This obsession with thinning everything is making them lose sight of practicality.
