Apple's pride

And rather than paying cash to Samsung, they can just avoid the penalty by making their tablets and computers use OLED
Or maybe they simply decided to get their OLED displays from the current market leader?

So we end up with inferior OLED (compared to Micro LED) because Tim over did the orders?
Apple is better off going to microLED.
µLEDs are far from being marketable. You won't be seeing any commercially viable displays with that technology before next year and even then the prices will be absolutely prohibitive for computers, possibly even phones.

Also this is the first I heard that OLED are more energy efficient than LEDs. Thought it was the other way around...
It depends a bit on the display content, but in general OLEDs are more energy efficient. The backlight in conventional LCDs is constantly lit and draws power, even if the display shows a completely black picture.

OLEDs only draw power when they are actually emitting light. An OLED display showing a black picture draws virtually no power at all.

First MacBook Pro with a 5-digit price?
OLED prices have dropped significantly in the last years. Quite a number of laptop manufacturers (Asus, Lenovo, Dell, Razer) are already offering laptops with OLED displays, or will be offering them later this year. These machines don't cost that much more than the models with LCDs.

Because they are a business who wants to increase revenues by selling more of their products?
Yes!! Because Apple sells how many millions of iPads. The display is one of the most expensive components... that’s Billion$$ of dollars in manufacturing sales. Samsung probably makes more profits selling parts to Apple than their own division does selling Smartphones.

That’s why the whole “copying” thing was so insulting to Steve... Apple was dropping $6 Billion in parts sales to Samsung at the time. Head of Samsung just needs to cash the checks and smirk because HIS products are INSIDE all those iDevices.

I’m not buying any expensive apple stuff until I get my Apple credit card. I want that 3% cash back - it’ll pay for about a third of the sales tax here in ny

I thought Apple stuck with LCDs because OLED was a flawed technology... what happened? Planned obsolescence ?

No! I don't want OLED for a MacBook Pro or MacBook! Those devices are way more prone to burn in due to the menu bar, and static windows. Apple is better off going to microLED.

I understand that MicroLED is several years away from being commercially viable.

Do explain. Apple will have to buy all their OLED screens from Samsung regardless of whether Samsung charges them for below the contract volumes or not. It's not like Apple has a choice. "Selling more of their products" is not in question here.

You should read the article. They might be buying additional screens for iPads or Macs. That's an increase in orders from only buying screens for iPhones.

OLED technology has advanced considerably from the first screens we saw in smartphones and all the issues they had.

Apparently memes about Apple saying or doing this or that haven't changed.

I have been waiting for 12 inch OLED MacBook way too long and will have one on preorder on day one, I even started researching competition because Apple taking too long! Unfortunately, microLED still has major technological hurdles that will take several years at best.

I read the article. You are not answering my question. Whether Apple is going to use OLED screens in iPads and Macs has nothing to do with existing contract. It has to do with Apple trying to be competitive (because there are already many tablets and laptops with OLED screens on the market but not from Apple). And if they want to be competitive they will have to buy these screens and they will have to buy them from Samsung. Apple knows it and, more importantly, Samsung knows it. Samsung may throw Apple a bone here but they are not at risk of losing Apple contracts if they don't.

Everyone keeps saying there are MicroLED issues keeping them from being viable in mass market devices for many years. What are the issues?

really the only discussion they should be having with Sammy is why the F are the OLED screens your making for us giving more people headaches & eyestrain than the screens you use on your Galaxy's
Talk to Apple about it. Now is it Samsung fault?

So they buy their screens but then the two fight like cats and dogs about everything else.
What a weird relationship this is.

You don't nee an OLED iPad to reduce eye strain or blue light. Apple's had two features for a few years now which reduce blue light & eye strain without needing an OLED. They're called "True Tone" and "Night Shift".

The problem with those options is that they still emit the high levels of blue light from behind the screen. They help but are only a bandaid approach to the overall problem. The solution would be to use LEDs that are physically masked as more yellow, ones that have the harmful, invisible blue light part of the spectrum removed or covered, but that is not lightly to happen. OLED still has elevated levels of invisible blue light over say, the sun or incandescent light bulbs, but it’s roughly 1/3rd that of regular LED light.

So while True Tone and Nightshift due help immensely against eye strain, I worry they don’t do enough to block the harmful range of blue light from hitting the back of our retinas.

I hope future MacBook displays can be 120fps.
~Y~E~S~

And ffs also support external displays at 120 HRz as well. I love Apple but I feel like I shouldn't still have that on my wishlist for a "Pro" notebook | or at least that's what they call it anyway...| much less one that can easily climb into the several thousands of dollars

OLED displays could have several benefits for future iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models, including lower power consumption, increased brightness, sharper colors, and faster response times compared to LCDs. OLED panels are often thinner, too, which could lead to slimmer and lighter product designs.

Why not add the cons, like OLED burn-in.

I have my doubts about this rumour for the sole reason that it's not a good idea to use OLED for a computer display which has a lot of static content, like the Menu Bar.

I could definitely see this working with the iPad Pro - the reduction of depth that OLED panels will bring will make them a must buy for many. iPad Pro X?

Intriguing as to what laptop this would go on. My money is on one of the first ARM A class processor laptops.

So hang on a minute. Are we going to have OLED screens on MacBook Pros for around a year (2020), and then Mini-LEDs from 2021 onwards? What's the point? Why not just transition straight to Mini-LED?

Nobody:

Apple: Uhh... I know we just sued yall... But, umm... Do yall think we could get them screens up off you?

Apple is really something else! Lol

Given Samsung themselves don't ship their TVs with OLED, and I heard LGs OLED tvs do suffer, I just figured its just as bad.

as OLED is supposed to be significantly better for the health of our eyes.
What? What about PWM and headache? What about smearing effect when scrolling?
The future is AMAZING.

Why are people on here so negative? This is incredible.
PWM and headache. Smearing effect. Burn-in. And next to no energy saving depending on how Apple implement dark mode on each device.
These are enough to give people a pause when buying OLED screen devices.

You're completely right. Instead of Apple owing Samsung hundreds of millions of dollars, Samsung should if anything owe Apple a rebate because they sold so many more phones than they agreed upon /s
A forum tip: you can manually type “[ SPOILER][/ SPOILER]” (without space) to fold other people’s long reply.
