iPad could be used as a skateboard at school

I heard that the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 will be out before March. Probably can't wait for the iPad Pro which will be few months late.

plot twist: the bigger iphone and bigger ipad are one and the same, with a 4K 13" screen. beat that, samsung.

They probably can, as Apple will have to wait for Samsung to make the screen for them before they can do anything in the 1st place.

Always a problem for a company that only really makes cases for fits other people's hardware inside, then writes software to lock it down and tie it together.

Would make a great productive tool for the areas in which something like that would be useful. Arts, design, medical sciences, for example; all those could really use a bigger iPad.

I agree!

Sorry, but that's never going to happen.

There's a nerdy kind of attraction to having one OS straddle the range of devices (like what Google and Microsoft are trying to do), but it's a trap! Different devices work best with different user interfaces.

Apple have done it pretty well - the XNU kernel is used both on OSX and iOS, which runs Darwin, containing common frameworks like Foundation, Core Animation, AV Foundation, Core Data, etc. The two OSes diverge from there, with iOS using the touch-optimised UIKit framework for UI controls (things like switches, etc) and OSX using the mouse-optimised (although slightly decrepit) AppKit framework for its UI controls.

The AppKit/UIKit difference is the thing that keeps 90% of Mac apps from being compatible with iOS and vice versa. It would be easy as pie for Apple to actually "unify" these systems by porting the missing frameworks to each platform (in fact, they already have a Mac version of UIKit - it's bundled with the iOS Simulator).

Apple don't want these systems to be unified. There's no time when it would be better to have a little touch app on your Mac desktop, or a mouse app on your iPhone or iPad, over an app natively designed for that platform.

Thanks for the informative and knowledgable reply! :)

New iPhone in May is ridiculous, at least let people have the 5S for a year before it becomes "out of date".

The world doesn't revolve around the people that just got the 5S. There are people like me for example, that still uses their iPhone 4. I'm upgrading to the next phone because my contract from 2011 expires in September.

Here's the deal - if you go by the people here, the iPad mini would never have been released. The people here clung to Job's remark about 7" tablets being a No Go. But the second the mini was released, the same folks gushed all over themselves to say how innovative and perfect the 7" mini was.

As log as apple offers the choice in size, like the iPad, then both can be happy. It's when apple dictates what people like(only 9.7" tablet), that you run into people being really negative and antsy.

Embrace choice. I know that as an apple fan, apple has done the best to beat that out of us. But trust me, it's not scary to choose 1 of 2 screen sizes.

Fair enough, but the iPad mini is a 8" tablet (7.9") and the iPad is a 10" tablet (9.7") so there is less than 2 inches separating them. Point being that Apple didn't give people a 7" tablet, they gave people what they thought people who were calling for a 7" ipad actually wanted. They did it their own way.

Apple tell you what you want, not the other way around - and for most people, they are absolutely right ;)

If Apple tells us that a 12.9" iPad Pro is what we want, then it will suddenly be true for millions of people overnight.

I personally hope that this screen is actually for a new Retina Macbook Air model to replace the current 11" & 13" models that will retain the same form factor footprint as the current 11" Macbook Air. That would be my ultimate on the go work laptop machine.

But I will probably be shown that my wish is silly by Apple once they release whatever it is they release and I am blown away by how awesome this new device is.

Don't know about Jobs, but I wouldn't allow this.

I don't think that's a good plan either. Say what you want about how great the iPad is, but it still isn't a substitute for a fully functioning laptop that is also super light and portable.

I read the article more closely, and here is what it says about a larger iPad replacing the 11" MacBook Air:

So, there is no insider information here. Note that is says "sources speculated". I highly doubt Apple is sharing any information about future plans with DigiTimes' sources.

Yeah, this is all speculation. From the rumors of the larger iPad, which we're as likely to get as not, to me thinking where the future lies. For all I know, I could be 100% wrong. Laptops could continue selling steadily a decade from now, with only a few tweaks here and there to the basic form factor, and tablets remain supplementary devices that go alongside them.

I'm going off what I think is gonna happen based on what I'm seeing now, but I'm not gonna claim it's anything but semi-educated guesswork on my part.

I am also thinking that Apple might keep the 11" MacBook Air and discontinue the 13" MacBook Air, since there is already a 13" MacBook Pro for people who need that size screen. But this has nothing to do with Apple possibly introducing a larger iPad.

Really, the Airs are the one line that are most in danger of being absorbed by the others. Even if tablets aren't The Future, the 11" Air could easily be replaced with a regular sized iPad in a couple of years. A couple more spec bumps, and some higher end apps, and it's basically just as good.

The 13" Air? With the 13" Pro being only slightly larger, but a helluva lot better overall, it's a wonder it's selling as well as it is. Right now, I think of it as the option for people who really really really want to save a couple hundred bucks. If Apple were to make a very slightly thinner, very slightly cheaper Pro, the 13" Air would be...just...there.

larger iPhone is only logical. Aging baby boomers and even older Gen x-ers like me often have farsightedness creeping in. I have to hold my iphone farther way than I like to see it and it makes it harder to read because it's so small by the time it's in focus.
Not too sure there really is an untapped market there.
I think it will work great for the various POS kiosks that have popped up in the last few years. The check out girl wont have to hunch over to read it.
But I have a hard time imagining folks picking one of these over an 11" or 13" MacBook Air.

And what would they call it? Air Pro?

Apple:

Please bring back the ORIGINAL iPad design (no one likes the Air).

Please bring back the iPhone 4/4s DESIGN, but with a larger screen, preferably 4.5". (If you were stupid and dropped your phone and shattered it, that was your fault.)

Please bring back the look of iOS 6 for iOS 8.

Signed,

Anxious Apple customer.

Apple is also said to be examining the possibility of replacing the 11-inch MacBook Air with the larger iPad.

I have been waiting for the 11" model to get a better display, but if this turns out to be true, I'll definitely be picking one up before they disappear.

An open letter to Apple...

Dear Apple,

Thanks for a great 2013. It's been a long time since I stood up and actually cheered during a keynote, but that's exactly what I did during the Mac Pro unveiling at WWDC13. It's been a long 6 months since the unveiling until last week's release. It will probably feel just as long a wait until the new machine I ordered arrives in February. In the meantime, I'll cozy up to my iPhone 5S and all the other iGadgets and Macs in my life.

I can't wait till I see what 2014 holds (although after the Mac Pro purchase, my bank account can certainly wait a few months :D ) both in terms of software and hardware. In the meantime, have a joyous, safe and happy holidays!

See ya in 2014!

Or the screen resolutions of any larger iphone or ipad could simply remain a multiple of existing resolutions.

Yeah, with the A7 handily pushing around 2048x1536 pixels on the new iPads, even a down clocked “A8” could handle another doubling for a larger iPhone ... i..e, 1280x2272 (2x current 5/s/c), which up to 5” would be an outstanding ~521PPI :D

I don't want a bigger iPad, I want the 17" MacBook Pro (with matte screen option) to return to the fold.

I know, I know, dream on.... I am not the core user Apple wants anymore.

The 11" MBA couldn't easily be replaced by an iPad, because iPads don't run OS X and have a keyboard. After looking at the difference in price between the 11" MBA and the 13" MBA, I do think that it could just be eliminated, though. There is only a $100 difference in price. If Apple gets the 13" MBA under $1,000, I am not sure there is a need for the smaller laptop... unless people really demand the smaller size. Of course, Apple could also get the 13" rMBP under $1,000, and eliminate the MBA line altogether. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2014.

Tim cook era

I believe this. This is how Tim Cook runs a company. A bunch of form factors, trying to please everyone. Someone has to say no more sometimes.

Yep.

Any rumor more than six months out that lists some company Apple rarely or never works with on a large scale as the supplier should be taken with a salt lick. Double if it comes from Digitimes. It's generally an attempt to pump the other company by association

----------

As Apple says, better they do it than someone else

Agree with you for the most part but Quantum Computer is not a fringe supplier for Apple. They do a huge percentage of Apple's Macbook line, and I believe 100% of the Macbook Airs. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Digitimes as the source combined with the lead time of the rumour makes it suspect enough though. On the other hand this screen has been a persistent rumour from numerous sources, so the screen itself is most likely coming. Sources don't agree in their speculation on what it is actually for though.

Just like all the rumours talked about a budget phone coming from Apple, I hope the media doesn't successfully imprint a misinterpretation into the minds of the consumer and themselves. The 5c was never meant to be a budget phone - it was a repackaged and upgraded 5, a more quality offering than simply keeping the 5 on sale another year.

I'd love a 5.5 inch iPhone. The iPhone screen size is the only reason I'm not using an iPhone at the moment.

The iPad, I think the size is good where it is. I probably wouldn't buy one larger. But I know a lot of people would, so I say bring it on.

It is absolutely amazing that anyone would want a limited iOS toy instead of a full Mac computer.

Picture shows an 11" Macbook Air

Doesn't it? The 12.9" Screen is depicted as larger than the Macbook Air, but the same overall height as the laptop.

The aspect ratio of the laptop appears to be that of the 11" as well.

Must be a misquote in the accompanying text to the picture.
