Why you poor chap? Do you have bad eyesight? Or Giant pockets?

Large phones are for girls with handbags or men with Size 'issues'

You need a small one to make yours look big? :)

And we know what you're doing with the other hand :p

Right now, no. I'm talking about a potential future still a little ways away. The way I see it, touch is going to become the de facto standard way we interact with our computers in about 10 years time.

OK... Maybe in 10 years! ;)

Actually, I do have poor eyesight and would enjoy a reasonably larger screen. There are lots of visually impaired people who would say the same. Size is an issue when one is struggling to see. But you'll know this one day when your older ... I wonder how humorous you'll find it.

That's why I suggest that the iPad mini should have a model with phone capability. And maybe a switch so you can choose between "giant iPhone" and "tiny iPad".

Would love to hear some reasons why they would make a larger screen iPad.

My guesses are to work towards integrating iOS and os x, to offer more variety, and to produce large screen devices that can be used by multiple users at a time. Maybe they even want to keep getting bigger and bigger and produce all sizes of touch screen devices?

Sorry, but that's never going to happen.

There's a nerdy kind of attraction to having one OS straddle the range of devices (like what Google and Microsoft are trying to do), but it's a trap! Different devices work best with different user interfaces.

Apple have done it pretty well - the XNU kernel is used both on OSX and iOS, which runs Darwin, containing common frameworks like Foundation, Core Animation, AV Foundation, Core Data, etc. The two OSes diverge from there, with iOS using the touch-optimised UIKit framework for UI controls (things like switches, etc) and OSX using the mouse-optimised (although slightly decrepit) AppKit framework for its UI controls.

The AppKit/UIKit difference is the thing that keeps 90% of Mac apps from being compatible with iOS and vice versa. It would be easy as pie for Apple to actually "unify" these systems by porting the missing frameworks to each platform (in fact, they already have a Mac version of UIKit - it's bundled with the iOS Simulator).

Apple don't want these systems to be unified. There's no time when it would be better to have a little touch app on your Mac desktop, or a mouse app on your iPhone or iPad, over an app natively designed for that platform.

Even if you're completely right when the diagonal size is the same, in this case the difference is really marginal:
513 cm² for 13.3" 8:5 vs 515 cm² for 12.9" 4:3 The perspective is not really good in this picture

Can't argue with math. :p

...though I did think that a squarer aspect ration on a same sized screen would give you a few more square inches of real estate. Should've done some looking-up before I posted that.

You're right about the perspective. A 13" iPad will be about as tall as the whole screen, bezel and all, of an MBA, but not quite as wide.

Anyway a 13" iPad is a bad idea :p

Eh, I could think of a few good places where a larger iPad would be useful. The biggest make-or-break issue wouldn't be size alone, but how comfortable it is to use. It doesn't necessarily matter how big it is, so long as it's light and easy to carry.

iphone is not going to be released in may 2014. it's a bs rumor.

iphone 5s is not even released for china mobile yet

If they don't release an iPhone with a larger screen this year I'll be jumping ship.

I never thought I'd say it, but I might be too. My girlfriend just got a Galaxy Note 3, and while that is way too big for my tastes, I'm definitely interested in at least a 5 inch screen now.

If i added up all the "bigger" rumors, i would have my apple TV.

Yep.

Any rumor more than six months out that lists some company Apple rarely or never works with on a large scale as the supplier should be taken with a salt lick. Double if it comes from Digitimes. It's generally an attempt to pump the other company by association

iPad Mini , iPad Air , iPad Pro = Fragmentation

Cannibalisation of Macbook Air?

As Apple says, better they do it than someone else

Exactly. Really is silly. They're claiming that Apple is going to move away from their yearly updates to the iPhone and go to 6 month cycle? Not buying it. They've updated yearly since 2007 when the first iPhone was released. Why would they suddenly change that now?

I don't think that they have that right either.

I can see release dates six months apart for the "Classic" iPhone vs the "large" iPhone for logistic reasons, and that makes a great deal of sense, but each would still only get yearly updates. That have the effect of smoothing out production and sales over the year.

Speculation, but it could be that the large iPhone will get the A8 first, and the classic six months later and that would be the yearly pattern from then on or until a third configuration per year is released.

I think too..that will be the macbook air with 1440p display

Well, the regular size iPad shrunk year over year, especially with the ultra slim bezel of the iPad Air. So the possibility for a larger screen is increasing.

I bet you 5 bucks we'll start seeing it in about 4. :p

I read the article more closely, and here is what it says about a larger iPad replacing the 11" MacBook Air:

As for whether the large-size tablet will also adopt the same processor, performance is expected to be a major factor as the tablet is being considered as a substitute of the 11-inch MacBook Air, the sources speculated.

So, there is no insider information here. Note that is says "sources speculated". I highly doubt Apple is sharing any information about future plans with DigiTimes' sources.

I am also thinking that Apple might keep the 11" MacBook Air and discontinue the 13" MacBook Air, since there is already a 13" MacBook Pro for people who need that size screen. But this has nothing to do with Apple possibly introducing a larger iPad.

I think you might have it a little mixed up. According to the poll earlier this year for new 5s features the bigger screen was far and away the most asked for feature.

I would almost bet if they do up the screen size they keep a smaller model as well so I don't think it will be a huge deal.

googling a few polls, seems to show (on apple forums anyway) those who voted, we are around 15% to 20% feel the current size is correct.

Myself, I have wanted larger iPhone and iPad since day 1.
I just get used to being told I';m wrong for wanting such

I don't know why they would increase the size of the iPad? They would almost have to pair it with a key board and/or unified OS ala MS Surface.

They aren't going to release a larger iPhone before telling developers it's coming. When they go with a larger screen, they will first tell developers at an event like WWDC. The original iPad was announced in January and released in April, giving developers time to make apps for the larger screen.

Internal product development cycles don't work the way you're describing either.

Can I just get a 15" Macbook Air?:D

It would crush sales of the 15" rMBP. The average consumer doesn't care about clock speed, they care about screen-size, shininess, and they liked their iPhone so will definitely like Macs – right?

They'll see a thinner (thus 'better' in their eyes) 15" laptop for $1200, or a chunky 15" laptop for $2000. They will buy the $1250 almost every time, and use the saved cash for...well, another one?

The professional user, of course, provides a very different scenario.

those "rumors" are hilarious. iphone in may? ROFL

im sorry, macrumors. this is hilarious.

Would a tablet done like a MS Surface running OSX and iOS be a bad thing?

plot twist: the bigger iphone and bigger ipad are one and the same, with a 4K 13" screen. beat that, samsung.
