Simply not true!
"Grainy like Hell" isn't how I'd describe the current 27" display.

It amazes me how people see what they want to see according to marketing speak.

"THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CURRENT 27" DISPLAY"

Someone tells you that retina is the only way - everything else is now obsolete?
Gotta buy retina....

BTW - what's the maximum 'DPI' or 'PPI' that a human eye can resolve? And at what distance between your retina and the display is this calculated?

Grainy my ass.

By that logic we should still be at SD TVs. 1080p is all marketing right?

Look, some people may have better eyesight, some people may sit closer and have smaller desks, etc. Not everyone's going to have the same experience as you. And besides, switching the resolution to more real estate is just as important as a clearer screen. Switch the resolution on a 21.5 inch iMac to 1440p real estate? Sounds great to me.

Looks like Apple is returning to it's old '90's loosing ways. Throw a $#!T-load of products at the consumers to confuse the heck out of them. No model will stand out as "the best", eliminating their Best Products Image. They're moving into the Samsung products class. Next think you know, Apple will be licensing their OS and iOS to outside manufacturers.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Must be nice living in some world that doesn't adhere to reality. What are you even talking about? They'll have a retina model until they can lower the price and get rid of the regular one. They did the same with the MBP and there was no crisis.

Unless you work for Apple Corporate and in an upper office, you have zero information about what they have or why they do or don't anything.

Or is this your practice at being an analyst

Wow. Check out the title of this website ;) there is a hint there in the name.

99% of people here are posting their opinions. And frankly your silly response applies to all of them. It's a rumor site!!!

Dunno if anyone said that in this discussion, but I'd rather prefer to see Fusion Drive in base configs than the price drop. And overall SSDs/RAM upgrades price decrease.

I also hope they won't forget to update the GPUs as well (it's more important for 21-inchers, since 850m Maxwell is pretty big deal compared to 750m Kepler part).

Hope the new retina iMacs later in the year get a whole new design with a dramatically reduced border/chin around the screen.

Retina iMac?? I'd buy immediately. Once I got a MacBook Pro with retina display, I realized how blurry my iMac appears. Or maybe I just need to get ma eyes checked

I, for one, hope this is true. I'll bite (retna or nay); I'm currently using a mid-2010 iMac, and it was my first venture outside of Windows, and has been flawless, and I have loved it. However, it's almost 4 years old, so I think it's probably time. The machine still functions wonderfully, but I'm starting to become a little wary, given my experience with Windows (read: Dell, HP) machines. I would love to think that it will chug on forever, but I know that spinning drives fail, so...

Apple loves to ruin our eyesight. With a retina iMac, people will be even more curious to stare at it closer cause it doesn't look pixelated lol

Anyone else think that maybe the Mac Mini might get the same cylindrical redesign as the Mac Pro? Maybe this is why it hasn't become updated. Just my guess.

There's a note at the end of the article that says that a reader who was supposed to receive his 27" iMac on June 12 received an email postponing delivery to June 18. That's one week from today, which to me suggests an announcement on Tuesday, June 17. That's in line with what Apple usually does.

In any case, I'm in the market for an iMac, so I've been waiting for this minor refresh. Even though performance will only be marginally improved, I'd like to see what Apple does with pricing and what GPUs they offer.

Well isn't this great. I waited for WWDC just incase they did announce the iMac (minor) update. I've been waiting to order one (first one) and retina is not important to me at this time.

So I waited past WWDC and ordered one. It arrived today :( Now its going to stay in the box till I see how this rumour turns out. I'm not bothered by a minor CPU bump but any additional price reduction would be welcome.

So in regards to "Roller's" quoted comment above I ordered it last week and unfortunately no such luck on the email notice mentioned above.

Thank goodness for the 15 day return policy.

Why would someone want to waste GPU power on pushing more pixels on an imac? The resolution is fantastic, as is.

If you think you need a retina imac, then you are easily fooled by marketing gimmicks.

This is just stupid. Unlike you, I've actually DONE the experiment --- for other reasons, over a few months I ran my retina MacBook Pro side by side with my Ivy Bridge 27" iMac. The difference is VERY obvious.

Yes, the 27" iMac screen is beautiful. But beautiful is not perfect. And to claim that you cannot tell the difference at normal viewing distances (and I wear glasses) is the same sort of moronic ignorance ("it's new, therefore I will look sophisticated if I oppose it") we saw when the retina iPhone was announced, then all over again when the retina iPad was announced, THEN all over again when the retina MacBook Pro was announced.

iMac retina

How long will we have to wait for a 4k iMac? Well, Apple has a choice. If it wants to stick with twisted nematic (TN) technology, maybe not too long. Some TN monitors are already on the market at prices many consumers can afford. And, although purists don't like TN because of color banding and other issues, some of these get pretty good reviews. The new28-in Samsung is particularly interesting because Samsung is likely to get tapped as Apple's supplier for screens. On the other hand, IPS is a better technology, and Apple decides to settle for nothing less than the best, it's going to be a good while longer before the price of IPS screens comes down to a practical point.

If this rumor is true, this is the most relevant post. What we need is not retina displays. We need ssd non BTO config or at the very least a fusion default model so that I can pick it up locally and the gpu updated. Nvidia 800 mobile GPU we're introduced and launched over 2 months ago. These are the most important attributes for the iMac. In order for the imac with 4k display be usable we need a better dedicated GPU and currently one doesn't exists for this segment way too many pixel to push.

Apple is planning to update its iMac line next week with faster processors and lower prices, according to a new report from MacGeneration (Google Translate). Citing the same sources that correctly predicted the MacBook Air refresh this past April, the website also notes that Apple may also include Thunderbolt 2 ports on the new iMacs and will launch them later in the week instead of the usual Tuesday release day as done for other Apple products.

Like the MacBook Air refresh, Apple may be planning to increase the processor speed of at least some configurations by 100 MHz by using a number of recently launched processors, including the 3.3 GHZ i5-4690, the 3.5 GHz i5-4690, and 3.6 GHz i7-4790 for the 27-inch model as well as the 3.0 GHz i5-4590S and 3.2 GHz i5-4790S for the 21.5-inch model. It is also possible that Apple will cut the price of the standard iMac configurations to go along with these minor spec bumps.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last year and earlier this year that Apple would be launching a lower-cost iMac in the near future to address growth in foreign markets.

Meanwhile, recent evidence in the OS X Yosemite developer preview has also indicated that Apple is gearing up to launch Retina Display-equipped iMacs in the near future. It is possible that Apple may then initially move to split the iMac lineup, selling the Retina models at higher price points alongside cheaper non-Retina models. A lower price point for the non-Retina models may also help address growth in critical foreign markets such as China.

With the MacBook Pro models being Apple's self-proclaimed most popular models, it made sense to stagger out the transition to retina display as well as the transition away from optical disc drives, built-in Ethernet ports, and FireWire 800, as well as standardized and replacable drives and an easily serviceable design. With iMacs, there's no real need to do this. There's no need to be delicate with it. Assuming displays are available, just switch them and there won't be many (if any) REQUIRING the older design/displays.

I always seem to be in the market for the wrong Mac. I was looking to buy an iMac a few years ago, and updates didn't come forever, but the MBPs were getting a lot of attention. Now that I want an rMBP, the iMacs are getting the love...

Oh well.

WTF!!! How is it I ordered a fully loaded 27" on May 24 and can't even get a shipping date????

I'd cancel if you can and re-order in a couple of weeks if you can hold on!

I guess it wasn't released at the WWDC as it's not much of an update but still important one for anyone buying a new iMac. I still wouldn't hold my breath for the retina iMac.

I'm waiting for the imac to update since February saving money for it for a long time now....finally heard some news about it...not so much into the retina display since its expensive and out of my budget (i'm a student)....so sad when it wasn't announce in wwdc...

I tend to believe this rumor because the changes are relatively minor and make sense, but it is a rumor after all, so it may not happen or may take another week, two weeks, or more. We'll just have to wait to see what next week brings. Unlike major releases where the buzz builds and publications like the WSJ weigh in, this won't receive much attention.

4K has had a meteoric rise compared to 30" 2560 x 1600 panels of the past decade. It has drummed up the most interest in monitors that I have seen in years. Even 1440p made it down to the cheap seats but 4K is not a side grade.

What's the big appeal of a Mac mini? I'm genuinely just curious. Is it because they're highly upgradeable and you get to choose your own display/s? If they redesign the physicality of the Mac mini I can see a lot of the internals becoming soldered just like in the rMBP. Surely that will just reduce upgradeability?

Those are good reasons. Decoupling the main module from the display means you can replace them independently or move them around, or use the mini is a server environment where it doesn't need an attached monitor. Even if the internals can't be user-upgraded, those are still real advantages.
