i am waiting patiently for a 4K iMac - looks like this will be 2015, before they hit the UK supply lines :{

Another interesting prospect would be a mac-mini pro: i.e. a halfway house between the mac pro and the mac mini. quad-core CPU, discreet (?dual) GPU, TB2, USB3, broad well, support for 2-3x 4K monitors - all for $1999

a boy can certainly dream!

----------

Or maybe I just need to get ma retinas checked

:p

Yawn to both 100Hz bump and retina iMacs. 4K monitors are already on the market. Asus has one for $650. It's TN, but apparently, it doesn't suck.

This is just stupid. Unlike you, I've actually DONE the experiment --- for other reasons, over a few months I ran my retina MacBook Pro side by side with my Ivy Bridge 27" iMac. The difference is VERY obvious.

Yes, the 27" iMac screen is beautiful. But beautiful is not perfect. And to claim that you cannot tell the difference at normal viewing distances (and I wear glasses) is the same sort of moronic ignorance ("it's new, therefore I will look sophisticated if I oppose it") we saw when the retina iPhone was announced, then all over again when the retina iPad was announced, THEN all over again when the retina MacBook Pro was announced.

Small screens with high resolution always look sharper than larger screens with the same resolution. If the 27" retina iMac resolution is only 2880×1800, it will only look marginally better than the 27" non-retina iMac at 2560x1440.

My '09 model iMac is getting up there in years and I would love to replace it with a new one but I am still waiting on that Retina version to come. I love the quality of the Retina screens on all of Apple's products and won't settle for a device without one if I'm gonna be spending that kind of money.

but it would be a noticeable bump in screen real estate

Meh... I feel like if all is updated is a 100Mhz processor speed bump and thunderbolt 2, then I'm totally content with my 3 month old 2013 nearly maxed out 27" iMac. I was going to sell it at a loss and upgrade to a new 2014-2015 iMac, but only if it was Retina.

The only big difference for me (and perhaps everyone) is if they update to the new 8xx series GPU or not. Since I have the 780M, going to the 880M won't make much of a difference, even a lot worse since a lot of games of current run better on the 780M than on the 880M.

I mean, check out the Diablo III benchmarks. 84 fps on 880M vs 186.1 fps on 780M. That's a 100fps reduction with 880M LOL!

Also, I guess if Apple updates the iMac now, there won't be another iMac until at least 2015. I don't think Apple has ever updated a Mac twice a year?

my thinking exactly. I have until monday to return mine (fully maxed out minus the RAM) and the only thing that I would kick myself for is some awesome new form factor, which I think that apple is working more on some new mystery products (and iwatch) more then their mac line right now. So I would guess we see the big update for iMacs next year.

The other thing was if they up'd to the 880m next week but I keep hearing that the 880m isn't utilized correctly to make that big of a difference.

The price drop isn't even worth me taking it back to the mall if it is only 100$ (which I have no idea how much it will be)

Actually, I heard there are going to be massive product updates in the fall. This is a minor tweak coming next week. New CPU and minor upgrade.

I am happy to buy one of these imac's for my kids. but with the new OS release. There is going to be massive Mac updates i am being told this fall and winter.

And we are not just talking a new mac version of the same body, like the imac's or laptops. This fall/winter will have lots of new cool hardware, not just the iphone, iwatch or new apple tv.

Massive updates in the fall/winter, but not anything noteworthy for iMac until at least 2015. If there was supposed to be a noteworthy and massive update to the iMac, it would be a retina display anyway. The technology to drive such a display with Apple quality standards of performance definitely will not be here until 2015 at the very least.

Again, I don't think Apple is going to update the iMac twice this year.

Why so many people believe that 27 or 28" iMac cannot be 4K?

There seem to be more choices for 4K monitors coming out this year:
http://www.cnet.com/products/monoprice-28-inch-4k-gaming-monitor/

I pointed out before that they could go with 4K. It just wouldn't be doubled from what they use now, meaning elements would be scaled differently if they went with a "retina" mode for clearer rendering of text. That would instead have to be developed around a 1920x1080 scale. They do change things like that sometimes, so it could happen.

What Apple needs now is what they had some fifteen years ago: a US$1,000 iMac that could compete with the common PC offerings of the time. And they could do it, too. They could also get rid of their aluminum fetish for once and make a good polycarbonate housing. I've had three plastic iMacs, all still working, and not one has shown a crack.

Oh, and drop Ives' obsession with thinness. It isn't helping anyone.

If it happens there might be some screen resolution upgrade but there won't be a true "retina" display.

Likely there will be the inclusion of TB2 and the Fusion drive will be standard on the 27" and maybe also on the 21.5".

There will be some price adjustments for additional memory and storage options.

A new Mac Mini should be announced sometime after this iMac bump. If not then the Mac Mini's future looks somewhat dubious.

I have a 2008 iMac and am (still) looking for a new model, but the cost and performance hold me back right now. I had hopes for more, better, and sooner. Sadly Apple has fallen way behind in my opinion. They seem to care less and less about the whole product, or as I like to think, the Hardee's of computers. 'Let do the one thing we do and do it great --to-- lets make tacos, burgers, salads, chili, and everything else.'

My next issue is that while they say this could happen and I am sure it will it will be dang close to the end of the year before they have something on the shelves. That really sucks. Give me the update and give me the computer I need/want. Or better yet build something I can make changes on myself as I need to upgrade so I don't have to buy something new every few years.

Sry, Just had to rant.

Oh and why are we talking mac mini and all this other crap on a thread about iMacs? No answer needed, really.

I work at a University Computer Store (which is also an Apple Campus Store), and all everyone seems to be interested in are updated Mac Mini's, while updated iMacs are good, how about giving the Mini some love!

By that logic we should still be at SD TVs. 1080p is all marketing right?

Look, some people may have better eyesight, some people may sit closer and have smaller desks, etc. Not everyone's going to have the same experience as you. And besides, switching the resolution to more real estate is just as important as a clearer screen. Switch the resolution on a 21.5 inch iMac to 1440p real estate? Sounds great to me.

Must be nice living in some world that doesn't adhere to reality. What are you even talking about? They'll have a retina model until they can lower the price and get rid of the regular one. They did the same with the MBP and there was no crisis.

Computer monitor resolution has got nothing in common with tvs.
Also, it's not real estate. It's space that your OS interface on your computer screen is capable of displaying.

How does it not? The higher the resolution the sharper the picture, it's the same thing.

You sure got me there. It's a common term for the size of UI elements on screens. Get over it.

considering a "good" 27" monitor still goes for $600-$800, the iMac is extremely competitively priced.

People who are clamoring for 4K don't know what they want. Not only are they going non-retina on the 27" model, they most likely are going TN to keep a lower price, which is a much more inferior panel. Part of the "OOO I WANT THAT" culture, customers who don't think. An IPS panel will probably ring up an extra $1k premium.

What I'm really hoping for:

- Increased processor speed, even if only a little, it's exactly what I need
- Thunderbolt 2 (was going to buy a new iMac and was disappointed when I realised it doesn't have TB2)
- 100€ price drop

I also hope it will hold its value until the end of the year and that I will be able to resell it easily later this year, in case another iMac with Broadwell gets released. For me it's really about speed.
I like how FrozenDarkness referred to a "OOO I WANT THAT" culture, some people just buy stuff for the sake of it, not because they need it.

I guess it is safe to assume at some point, either this refresh, or the forthcoming major refresh with Retina displays, that the iMac will become even thinner. Yes, it really doesn't matter how thick it is, but I am sure once they move to 'all-flash' and ditch the magnetic drive, they'll be able to shave off that bubble at the centre/rear of the machine. No?

Perhaps but that's still a long way to go I think. Also, I don't know if some people don't prefer a normal hard drive over a flash drive, even if it was the same price.

And then it could eventually look like this one day:

Apple will continue to thin out the iMac, but don't expect the HDD to go anywhere yet.

It is still shocking that the Fusion Drive isn't standard, even in a smaller capacity (64SSD).

And Apple likes bezels...they may reduce it a tad, but the chin and bezel aren't going anywhere either.

Actually there is a rumour that will arrive later this year a 5K iMac pro, in black unibody and 27-28" in size with only SSD and maybe dual discret GPU and no IGP. curret models updatd with slight lower prices will be the poors iMac, and the Pro in Black as the High End model. Same Would occur to Macbook, Air model in silver w/o Air moniker, and Pro models in Black, some specifications upgraded too.

Haha maybe. Source? :p
