Waze it is then. At least they only have ads when you are stopped…………… although I think Google Maps does not have any? Ironically. Could be wrong though so may be worth using them.

It will be a big mistake when Apple Maps (or any other Apple app) pushes ads (pop-ups, banners or complete advertorials) when just browsing the map. The only "ad" that would be OK, is an ad that appears when you deliberately have put in a search for a product or location. Or just small icon dot with a name on the map, nothing else. It has to be visible, but subtle. Something like Furkot does.

Google Maps or Waze then
Waze? Nope... it often got me illogical routes (sometimes even roads that have been closed more than a year ago) and outdated location information. Google is more up to date when it comes to location info. But Apple Maps, Google and Waze are horrible in avoiding traffic jams. Only TomTom (devices) is king in avoiding heavy traffic. Tried it many times, side-by-side and with two vehicles.

My best combination for travel (including road trips) is Google Maps for finding out information on locations, Furkot for long distance planning and my TomTom device while on the road.

Google pushes those who pay the most in location searches and sometimes vaguely related stuff too. During navigation there's no ad. But it wouldn't be surprising if the calculated routes sometime deliberately pass some companies that pay a bit more. In some regions we saw the commercial parking garages much easier on the map than the free ones.

Of course they are.
Next is to charge for it.
Eventually every app will have a monthly fee...but hey worry not, it's only .99 cents a month.

It is “journalist” Mark Gurman who is reporting this, the same guy who claimed the iPad Pro M5 would get 2 front facing camera’s and also has been claiming for years that a touchscreen MacBook is coming soon…

He's right much more often than wrong. Besides this is a report, not a speculation.

Apple Maps already selectively shows me data that I don't need or want. Not sure that the algorithm is, but it is terrible. We don't eat at fast food restaurants, but that is all we get on Apple Maps. Ever try to find a good, non-chain restaurant on Maps. Not possible without a ton of work. The place I'm searching for is always that little dot that, no matter how much I zoom in, never gets expanded so I can see the name.

I don't think having "pay for placement' is going to be much worse than it is now.

What we really need is a way to set search preferences. For example, "Never show McDonalds", "Never show Arbys", etc.

This would work exactly like ATT does with spam calls. ATT charges the spammer, then gives me an app that eliminates spam. The perfect solution for Apple.

....

These days I find 99% of all the ads irrelevant, and for the leftover 1% - there is 0.001 probability I will think about buying a product they promote, and not necessarily from them, i.e. it would work as “reminder”, like “oh, herbal tea, right! I need this, not this one though.”.
....
You're just not giving up enough personal data. If you did, the Ads would be nearly perfect. This is your fault, not the Ads fault. 😂

Apple Maps could feature integrated ads as soon as next year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

iOS-26-Maps-Glass.jpg

In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple's plan to bring more ads to iOS is moving "gaining traction," with the Maps app being next in line. The project will apparently give restaurants and other businesses the option to pay to have their details featured more prominently in search.

The system is said to be similar to Search Ads in the App Store, which allows developers to pay to have their software appear in a promoted slot above other results for relevant queries. Apple's approach reportedly leverages AI to deliver relevant and useful results, in a better interface than similar offerings from Google and other companies. Gurman warned that the move risks some amount of consumer backlash.

Will be deleting the maps app, thanks Apple!

Im in the UK and Apple Maps is borderline useless for finding businesses. Smaller local ones usually do not exist on Apple Maps in my experience, when they do then they are frequently in the wrong place. Every single time I have reported the issue with a business and inputted the correct address, nothing happens.

It is better than Google Maps at finding residential addresses in my experience, though. I end up having both installed and use Google to find businesses and Apple for peoples homes.
Last time I tried to find a business using Google Maps, there were lots of them. But all too many were out of date, out of position.

Just checked my immediate area and found a mix of some businesses being on both, some Google only, some Apple only. The largest company site in the area changed name a few months ago - and that is shown on Apple while the old name is shown on Google. The Royal Mail depot is on Google but not Apple. The car place I go to is on Apple but not Google. For big organisations, it is surprising that they don't always make sure they are on all mapping services.

Probably find that for small businesses it largely depends on whether the owner, etc., have IOS or Android phones.

Last year, I found a cafe had changed name. I reported the issue to Apple and they fixed it quite quickly. While no report I've ever made to Google has resulted in a change, so far as I know.

However, I'll do whatever is needed to find the place - address, postcode, search. Not usually more than a minor annoyance.

Because Apple spent the last 15 years marketing itself as “above” selling user data, relying on advertising for revenue, and acting like Google. Apple built a customer base around this. This is a small move but it shows cracks in the armor of the reputation they’re built as being above needing to put ads in Apple Maps, for example.
Who said Apple is selling user data. Is user data being sold due to ads in the App Store?

Dear Tim Cook or whoever reads this at Apple:

The whole reason i buy Apple products is to get away from all this advertising that is EVERYWHERE already.

Unless the advertiser receives user data what incentive will they have to continue their ads? Even if it's anonymous they must be offered data.
