Who said Apple is selling user data. Is user data being sold due to ads in the App Store?
Apple started selling user data when they made a deal with google a long time ago. The whole bs about Apple focused on privacy and security is a farce!

So before Apple “made the deal” no user data passed between Apple and google even when users typed in “google dot com”?
Going by your logic you probably believe Google doesn't sell user data either. They monetize it.

So if Apple Maps becomes as bloated as Google Maps, then what’s the point? To me, Apple Maps was suppose to be the slick, less cluttered and annoying alternative to Google Maps. (And less spyware)

Since the user is not known it is not user data. It is data.
💯% correct.

You sound like an Apple lawyer playing the semantics game.
Semantics refers to meaning. Far too many people glibly say, “That’s just semantics!” not realizing it means the underlying concepts, precepts, and principles involved, and is not mere word play.

Apple lawyers don’t play “semantics games” — they may play “word games” just as Epic and others do (e.g., certain politicians), but when they are arguing facts and legal precepts — and the meaning of terms in contracts, laws, and regulations — they are focusing on *semantics*, and engaged in a serious endeavor with enormous implications.

We all need to pay more attention to semantics, not disparage it.

This was obvious enough the moment they created CarPlay. It was only a matter of time. Imagine driving down the highway and getting adds for coffee, snacks, gasoline, etc. Makes sense - unfortunately.

We live in Arizona. We have access to a web program "az511.gov" that shows current accidents and road works with closed roads and suggested by passes. No advertising for locations. "Geico" shows at the top of the page and could be the only supporter of the service. The map allows the user to zoom in and there are cameras around the state that allows traffic to be seen.

No mapping service seems to be able to access the same state data and display it in their map product. But Apple Maps often says there is a need to alter course due to some recent circumstance as does Garmin.

Had few challenges with my TomTom GPS units in the UK. Garmin does okay but is a distant second.

In theory, in the USA, all vehicle built in GPS units are supposed to get seven years of updates as regulations require seven years of parts availability. Fat chance of that happening.

I bought a 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser built in December 2020. The production line for the 200 series stopped 1 March 2021. Despite being a $85,000 vehicle, no map updates have been offered for sale or free since I purchased the vehicle 10 January 2021.

We have Garmin RV model GPS/Map equipment that gets updates on a regular basis. No ads. So there are alternatives to both Apple and Google maps if one is willing to think outside the box.

And many of us are definitely in the Apple "box" hook, line and sinker.

Consumer backlash doesn't usually move the needle unless it is an egregious overstep.

Boiling frog analogy. Not everyone will find this change that much of an overstep. I certainly do not like ads, find them usually intrusive and some are clearly tasteless. I do my best to avoid them. Not sure if there is anything that can be done here aside from avoid using Apple Maps.

It's maddening to type the actual name of the App or company that you specifically want only to have to scroll down and hope the one you need is obvious. If Maps does this crap, I'll find an alternative.
Agreed. Apple shows me everything but the specific app I'm looking for. Deceptive.

Maybe they need the ads to support the lousy app. Curious how many of the critical comments here are from people who actually use Apple Maps. In terms of monthly active iOS/MacOS users, Googple Maps & Google Waze have a 70-80% market share and across all devices has a 92% market share. I use Google Maps on my iPhone and Mac (except Naver Maps in Korea).

On a global level, Google Maps is so much better in so many ways, like transit routing, offline map support, street view, multistop trip planning (terrific when vacationing, you can even shuffle up to 10 locations to optimize a walk to various places), terrian maps (better for hiking), etc.

Yeah, this is terrible. Things like this is why I stopped taking Apple's marketing claims (privacy one is relevant to this) at face value.

The Apple apologists in the Apple v. Epic threads should be in favor of this, right? They were saying because someone chose an Apple product, they should accept whatever Apple is doing or they should switch to something else.

Of course. Quality is a subjective term. But value can be objectively measured based off results. Either a company makes money or it doesn't. If a company is as valuable as Apple, we can extrapolate from that there is intrinsic value in the products and services that they offer.
Would you agree that it follows that a more valuable company must then offer more value than a less valuable company?
