The iPhone XR makes you look stupid on two fronts:

- It makes you look like you can't afford the "real" iPhone

- And yet, It is still a very expensive phone. It is okay for Apple to have a lower priced model (SE), but it can't be priced the same as the flagship models of the competition.

What? You really think people from a distance make judgements about you based on the phone you own and use?

Seriously?

What country do you live in?

I commend Apple for going full 100% recycled aluminum with the new MacBook Air and the new life saving health features they packed into the Series 4. Both of these are milestone achievements that are unmatched by any other electronic consumer goods company, especially considering the scale at which Apple operates and sells.

BUT I do they think they got too greedy with their prices. Some might argue that this is the cost of being more environmentally friendly, but you have to keep in mind that Apple already has the Apple Tax. Now it is charging a second Apple Tax on top of the original price.

While Steve Jobs placed less emphasis on social and environmental responsibility than Tim Cook, he made sure that Apple products weren't outrageously priced. The original iPad and iPad 2 and iPhones 4 were great examples.

For me the prime example of Apple's increasing greed isn't even the iPhone XR or Xs and Xs Max. But the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini. The Air was supposed to be the people's notebook. The workhorse. The default laptop purchase. Now it feels like they are charging more simple 'cuz they can. It is the free market and capitalism allows them to do whatever they want, but it does leave one feeling that Apple has given into simplistic short term greed rather than keeping their eyes stubbornly focused on the horizon. Like they have in the past. This sense of purity in purpose that attracted so many die hard fans (including me).

The Air just became the cheap model. When it was first released it was very expensive for what it was... it was never meant to be the Volkswagen of laptops. It just became that way due to age and lack of updates.

Apple’s current product lineup is VERY nice. The overwhelming common flaw across the board are prices.

I understand they have to make a profit, but come on... They’ll still be making a profit and sell even MORE if they make the prices more reasonable.

It doesn’t make sense.

Why do people whine about prices? Too expensive for you, don't buy it. Problem solved.

There are tons of Windows computers you can buy cheap, and crappy android phones that wont ever see one update to buy :D

Apple has far more insight into what consumers buy of their products and at what price points than a group of people chatting in a forum ever will. Apple, like all businesses, sets prices according to what they perceive the market will bear.

The iPhone you buy will last you a LONG time if you care, i've been keeping my iphones 3.5 years on average. Name me one android phone that gets support that long? Apple is likely charging more because they see consumers are using their phones years longer than they used to...

Posts like this always make me laugh. You're equating Samsung with "cheap Android handsets" and only Apple can provide "quality" when it comes to phones.

Firstly, have you looked at the price of Samsungs flagship phones? Are they "cheap Android handsets"?

Secondly, get out of your iToy bubble. Samsung make Computers, phones, TV, fridges, bulldozers even friggin' oil-rigs! They do this because they can and nobody-else is doing it, heck they make the parts for your precious iPhone.

Not bad for a "cheap Android" company....
There are other companies in the worth that make "other stuff like cars and ships" and then make phones. In the US, some companies made MRIs and owned TV stations. The conglomerates can do what they want.

Frankly the only thing worth buying from Samsung is their TVs, and that's exactly what I do. Yes, Samsung does have an chip manufacturing business as well.

I'm glad you brought up the point about the price of the Note 9. I hear almost nobody complaining about the price, because it seems there are 50% discounts out there, which makes the price almost reasonable (and the sales are still low). Apple has no such promotions and when they take a step, the sky is falling, Tim Cook is greedy, the board should get rid of him and then what actually happens, is way afield from the rumors.

But that takes courage to switch. Seems that's lacking. Forum whines are easy.

Samsung makes great stuff but the TVs aren't one of them.

Well, Samsung's are pretty good TV sets but far below the best the market has to offer.

I think apple is reaping what they have sown. I think they will be facing this issue worldwide to some degree. The prices are too high to justify the phones, financing (or leasing) masked the high cost to some degree but the Xs and Xs Max are so expensive, its a lot even if you finance them over two years.

I agree.

Especially in Europe, the prices for many Apple products have gone beyond reasonable: I'd buy many of their new products at their USD prices, but not for what they cost here in Euros.

I've usually upgraded my iPhone each year. I saw no incentive in upgrading my €1.349 iPhone X 256 GB to iPhone XS with exactly the same price. The yearly cost is just not justifiable anymore, at least not for me.

Another customer-friendly strategy would be to include 128GB in the base model for iPhone X and iPad Pros. 64 GB is too little, 256 GB is of course fine, but overkill for many – especially for the price premium it comes with.

Compromise on storage or be milked by Apple. Neither are customer-friendly options (the latter is a stockholder-friendly option). Apple should at least try to offer us better value for money; it's the decisions of us customers that make or break Apple.

We've already voted with out wallets for $200bn worth in Apple's declined market cap. Maybe Apple will learn from it.

When the Air was originally released, it was around $1700. Then with subsequent updates and redesigns, it got dropped down to $999 and thus became the default mainstream laptop

Selling more isn't the end game. Selling more means more support costs, more warranty costs, etc. Apple sells a service and it prices it's service appropriately for it's market. Underpricing is just as bad overpricing (of course people would like to see apple tank and the price of the products slashed in half and Tim Cook fired and another Steve Jobs type reinstated, but none of that will happen in the real world ...the company is very smart and can turn on a dime).

I guess. But with data so moveable nowadays its not hard. In old days your data was locked in proprietary single platform software, now most things we create are available on multiple platforms whose files work across the platforms (Android, iOS, MacOs, Windows, and even linux). It really is so much better than it was a decade ago!

Yeah that's traditionally been the case - you pay a premium in the first year or two and after that they start bringing the price back down. The issue is the 'bringing the price back down' part seems to have quietly gone away with recent model launches - the 12" MacBook is still at $1,299 despite repeated rumours it would start getting a price cut. The XS was rumoured to start at $899 and the Max at $999, but they were in reality $100 more than that, the MacBook Pros have started at the same significantly higher price since they were redesigned in 2016. iPad pro models have also seen a price escalation with each release.

Sales were considered abysmal too at the higher price point. Apple Also did the same with the original iPhone. it's price was seen as ridiculously high that sales were much lower than expected. Apple dropped the price and they started flying off the shelves.

Apple has always been a premium priced company. But there's an upper limit to that price point that can be set before users / consumers start to question the value for those prices. Once pricing becomes too high, it (like basic economics 101 teachs) will have affect on decreased demand.

You're absolutely right. I think many people, though, are not internally happy or at peace. And for some, lashing out at The Man (Apple, TC, etc) elevates ones sense of worth and self respect, providing a short-lived blip of power.

Apple's own guidance shows they expect to continue growing.

Apple's guidance for this coming holiday quarter is for revenue between $89 billion and $93 billion.

Last holiday quarter Apple posted quarterly revenue of $88.3 billion.

And approximately $2 billion of that growth will be services. iPhone revenue could drop by over $1B and Apple could still meet the $89B lower end of its guidance.

It more and more looks like Apple overplayed it's hand with this year's high-priced products.

The iPhone XS and XR are not worth the upgrade for many over an iPhone 7 or 8 as the only things that are improved are the camera and the screen (for an almost 50% premium!). Even on an iPhone 7 you won't max out the processor or the GPU and I still think Touch ID is worth way more than face ID.

Here in the Netherlands you'll be registered for having an outstanding loan if you buy a subsidized phone, making iPhones way less attractive for people who want to buy a house as the registration will cut thousands of euros from your maximum mortgage and will increase your rent. Just putting down € 1500 at once for a phone is not something a person does every day.

Still using my 6s plus. Working perfectly, no freaking chance I buy a new Apple device ever again.
When it's time to upgrade I'll buy an iphone at least 2 generations old.

I bought my 6s plus when the 8s were coming out at a big savings. best decision ever.

Tim Cook & Co are all out of ideas to keep selling the high demanded product. So they just decided to raise prices. No Jobs to tell them what to do next.

I am tired of having a "breakthrough" device on a yearly basis. Maybe we should go back to when new products were launched every 3-5 years and were stable, by the time you learn how to use a software a new GUI has been rolled out with cut out features and new features... it never ends.

And approximately $2 billion of that growth will be services. iPhone revenue could drop by over $1B and Apple could still meet the $89B lower end of its guidance.

This misses the point that everything else is generally tied to their iOS device sales. Most of their services rely on iOS users using those services (Due to a lack of cross platform support for most of their services).

if iPhone sales tank, it's very likely that other categories (with some lag) will also eventually decrease. Less iOS eusers means less service revenues, less accessories revenues (less watch sales, less homepod sales, less AirPod, Less, dongles, etc).

this is why investors are spooked about the increased prices and the lack of volume reporting. there's a holistic picture here, and impact against iphone sales has further reaching affects outside of just the iPhone category.

Face ID is a lot more practical in the winter. I can unlock my phone without having to take my gloves off.
