Has anybody used Samsung's S10 one? It's easily tricked. Lets hope Apple can do a satisfactory job of it!

Touch ID > Face ID

I really just hate Face ID. Requirements of the location of the phone and proximity to my face or direction is a pain. In car/holder, fail - on desk, fail- in bed, nightstand, fail- on table or any other flat surface, fail. Touch ID grab and go- it is unlocked before the screen is in front of you.

I have tried and tried to get used to it, never have. I must enter my passcode 5+ times a day.

why only China? bring it on worldwide and ditch the annoying Face ID..

if the under display sensor is as reliable and fast as physical version,I see no reason why Apple should continue with Face ID.

I was impressed with Face ID initially but few years on..I can see it's limitation and ergonomic issues becoming more and more noticeable and never really resolved.

also by ditching Face ID they can minimise or even eliminate notch altogether.

Face ID was good in 2017 but now new technology of under display is available which is superior.just needs a little Apple touch.

I’m sure it would sell worldwide much better than China only

I think so too. I don't have a clue why they would not handle the iPhone line up like the iPad line up. There you have something for almost everybody - leaving absolutely no room for competitors.

Why does Apple have to innovate the FPS on a budget phone? Copy and paste here is fine.
Because there are many people in these forums who only deal with extremes! Where everything is an absolute! A superlative! All or nothing! Do or die!

Oy.
Thanks for calling them out and daring to apply logic.

Does China demand to fingerprint data in exchange for access to sales and networks in China?

It is doubtful that Apple would release a hardware, let alone an iPhone, just for the Chinese market. Making a product doesn't come cheap (R&D, production, testing, certifications, marketing, logistics, etc), so making it only available in one market is dubious.

The problem with in-display fingerprint sensor is the location. There's no marking or anything when the screen is blank, and you will only know the exact location of the sensor when it is scanning. Thus a slightly off finger can result in frustration. Then there are the optical vs supersonic sensor. Supersonic sensor has issues with screen protectors (for obvious reasons), while optical has issues with having to light up the screen where you put your finger on. Just like Airpower, Apple probably thinks that if they wanted to do this, it has to be able to scan the finger on any part of the screen, not just a specific tiny section. Since the tech was not there yet, it's not surprising Apple went ahead with FaceID.

My P30 comes with an optical under the display fingerprint sensor. It's okay. Again, the problem is not placing my finger on the sweet spot, resulting in failed scans on first or second try. However, speed wise, imo it's already fast enough compared to touch-ID. I'd rather have a better FaceID though, as then I don't even have to touch my phone.

Also can they bring the dual SIM solution they have rather than the silly eSIM version in UK that isn't fully supported everywhere yet.
Just get the Hong Kong version (which unfortunately carries an extra premium in the import market, by as much as an extra $50-100 for the same model...).

John Ivy, please chime in and take control.
Operations and Financial people are taking over :-(

Apple intends to launch a new iPhone for the budget-conscious Chinese market that features an under-display fingerprint sensor instead of expensive Face ID technology, Chinese media sources have claimed.

Please retake leadership by focussing on the use case of technology.
The main use case of TouchId/ FaceId technology is to Unlock or Authenticate.
I have two iPhone. One with TouchId, one with FaceId.

If I use my phone and have two hands at my disposal, I find TouchId easier.
If I use my phone for NFC purposes, I find TouchId easier
If I use my phone with one hand because the other is in use, then FaceId is easier.
If my phone is unlocked and I need to authenticate eg a purchase, I find the haptic feedback of TouchId are reassuring than FaceId.

How can something that's made in China be subject to tariffs in China?
Because it is being sold by a foreign (US) company, I guess?
iPhone prices in China are really expensive, which is why most Chinese bought theirs outside China (Japan, HK, Singapore, Taiwan, to name a few places where prices are cheaper than local Chinese prices).

I would love this. I hate Face ID, its worse than corn dogs. Never had so much problems since that came. Please bring fingerprints tech back.
No sense, FaceID works like a charm. Having both could be nice. If you have problem with FaceID try to rescan.

The same Qualcomm technology used by many android devices⚠️ where is the innovation Apple ! I was hoping for full screen fingerprint unlock sensor. Apple is turned into a copy&paste company without to innovate

Apple patents acoustic fingerprint imaging for full-screen Touch ID
Sure Apple is copy&paste this is why Android got home and car framework before, phones have secure FaceID, super fast Metal 3D API, incredible AR, super fast filesystem APFS... oh wait

Smart move to tailor a product for a market as big as China. That said, I have found FaceID on my XR to be so far superior to TouchID on my iPhone 7, that I would never want to go back.

Touch ID is more convenient
Face ID is more secure

Decisions decisions
I would love to see both options in the same phone then give the user the ability in the control center to select either or both. If you are working outside in the winter wearing gloves you simply switch to Face ID. If it is summer time and you are wearing mirrored sunglasses, switch to Touch ID. Going someplace where you want extra security on your phone, turn them both on.

I don't believe they will launch it in China only. This rumour is just like the one where they said China will get a Product Red iPhone Xs (which didn't happen).

Apple may introduce such phone though, to the whole market.
