honestly id much rather have this than face ID.
But articles like this make me wonder why apple devices arent cheaper in China than other markets. I mean its not like they have to pay a tariff or any kind of import tax. On the surface it seems like this would be the case but i'm sure there's a reason i'm not seeing.

Having more choices is always a good thing. Wonder if it would ever make it to the US. I love Face ID and you couldn't pay me to go back to Touch ID.

Touch ID > Face ID

I really just hate Face ID. Requirements of the location of the phone and proximity to my face or direction is a pain. In car/holder, fail - on desk, fail- in bed, nightstand, fail- on table or any other flat surface, fail. Touch ID grab and go- it is unlocked before the screen is in front of you.

I have tried and tried to get used to it, never have. I must enter my passcode 5+ times a day.

Try redoing the Face ID setup. Do the first part with it close to your face but for the second part do it looking down while holding the phone more far away (like at your waist). I do almost all of the cases you mentioned frequently and almost never have to retry. If you swipe up about halfway from the bottom of the screen you can make Face ID retry instead of entering your passcode.

This is interesting. I wonder what size it would be? A version of the XR? It would likely be an LCD phone. It would position under screen TouchID as a low-end technology, even if the whole screen is used rather than a specific touch location. The improved iOS 13 Face ID and likely improved hardware will make Face ID even more desirable. Having a lower-end TouchID phone will likely work to increase sales of the higher-end Face ID in China. Strategically, this could be a very smart move.

I would like to have an iPhone X without the notch. With UD FP it is possible. And that would look good.

Why the dual standards for China and rest of the world. China gets 2 physical sim slots. We get eSim. They get price cuts, we don’t. Now this.

I would take Face ID over Touch ID. Face ID, especially running iOS 13 on my XR is blazing fast. I do like the idea of under display Touch ID and could see Apple integrate Touch ID with Face ID in future iPhones for apps or services on your phone that you would want additional security.

I am still perplexed by the backlash over the notch. I have always liked the notch, especially knowing what it houses.

I would go back to TouchID in a heartbeat, considering my ambient light sensor just failed on my 6mth old iPhone Xs it meant I could not use FaceID at all, it just kept saying wait for your phone to cool down! The thing was not hot but it couldn't use FaceID as it seems a a failure in the sensors muck up the whole thing. Moving forward one day and the battery drain was was crazy fast, everything turned off, no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no background app refresh, no locations settings etc etc even on low power mode with the screen turned right down and still it drained in about 4-5 hours doing nothing apart from now getting super hot.

If that's how sensitive these phones are when one part of FaceID fails, and I really baby my iPhones just give me touch ID back, and yep under the screen please. Its a phone not a bank vault and TouchID was just fine on my other iPhones up to the my 7 before the X/Xs came along. Also its a royal pain on a 12.9" iPad, always saying I'm blocking the sensor, TouchID worked very well for my use case anyway.

Touch ID > Face ID

I can't speak to FaceID, but I can say I am often frustrated because my iPhone 8 unlocks too fast when I want to quickly take a photo. My unlock procedure has been to hit the home button quickly (I have raise to wake off) and then from the lock screen swipe left to bring up the camera. Very often, that quick press on the home button unlocks the phone and I'm on the home screen immediately.

(And yeah, I know, the workaround is to either put raise to wake back on or to wake the phone another way -- but the point of this is that TouchID is insanely fast)

i prefer touch id, when it works well. of course i'm sure they will have sideways face id soon, so it won't be as annoying, but still, sometimes it's nice to unlock your phone while it's laying flat.

Apple intends to launch a new iPhone for the budget-conscious Chinese market that features an under-display fingerprint sensor instead of expensive Face ID technology, Chinese media sources have claimed.

How about “the budget-conscious” European market too? I am in! :)
SE2 with fingerprint/homebutton and current camera without compromise. Will sell extremely well in Europe. We love quality and security, but don't need huge displays for bragging.

Btw... I wonder why Apple doesn't put its Face ID in their fancy stand-alone monitors. They never lay flat. Oh, yeah, they still don't have such monitors. Not even their 6K Pro.

Touch ID is more convenient
Face ID is more secure

Decisions decisions
Face ID is not more secure, despite the claims otherwise.

When was the last time you heard about a twin getting into his/her sibling's iPhone via Touch ID? When was the last time you heard about a person getting into his/her non-twin sibling's or friend's iPhone via Touch ID?

Even Apple suggests using passcodes and not Face ID for twins. Also, Apple states Face ID doesn't work well for kids.

This doesn't seem to happen at all with Touch ID. Yes, it's possible to fake fingerprints, but it takes very specialized knowledge and equipment to do it.

There are definitely advantages to Face ID, but the claim it is more secure doesn't hold up in the real world.

The same Qualcomm technology used by many android devices⚠️ where is the innovation Apple ! I was hoping for full screen fingerprint unlock sensor. Apple is turned into a copy&paste company without to innovate

Apple patents acoustic fingerprint imaging for full-screen Touch ID

Describe a couple of Apple innovations where Apple themselves design the tech.

Sounds weird, I'm pretty sure it's the under screen FP tech that's pricier at the moment? Very unusual for Apple to release a whole region specific device too (unless it literally means taking an iPhone XS, removing FaceID and replacing with TID3?)

I'm not so sure, the market is pretty flooded with OLED androids now, and it's (rightly or wrongly) considered by many to be the better screen tech, so if Apple are trying to regain competitiveness in the Chinese market, they will probably have to go spec for spec with the competition on things like this. Quite possible they will use cheaper off the shelf OLED panels in such a phone though (the ones in the X/S/Max are highly customised and this is what makes them pricy).

I want this instead of FaceID

hmmm.... a cheaper phone with a better user experience --- I'm not surprised Apple is getting clobbered in China over this.

Face ID frankly often sucks in day to day user experiences in ways that Touch ID NEVER did. I miss it too every time I use Apple Pay at check out. Use to be just a single tap, now it's a comedy routine.

I am still perplexed by the backlash over the notch. I have always liked the notch, especially knowing what it houses.

I don't even notice the notch 99% of the time because I'm looking at the content on the screen.

The convenience depends on the situation. Touch-ID is worthless with wet fingers or if you phone is in a water-proof bag.

I couldn't believe that Face ID works in a ziploc bag. I never would have thought that!

They already have region specific dual sim phones. More likely a variant of the dual sim XR. The notch will remain to house the camera. Apple has been working on under screen TouchID for sometime as their patents indicate. They abandoned it because they found Face ID to be superior.
