China already has a dual sim option specific to the region, but yeah, middle fingers an' that.
I mean that's pretty different. Every iPhone XR/XS/XS Max is dual-sim, China just doesn't have eSIM so they need a hardware slot.

The X models should have both Touch ID and Face ID with the cameras integrated under the screen and no notch. The normal iPhones either have a Notch or Touch ID. Covers all 3 segments, Premium (Both with no notch), Normal (Face ID with notch) and Classic (Fingerprint in screen or with home button).

The amount of time spent waiting for FaceID to not work, and then put in the passcode is frustrating enough that any time saved when it works is totally forgot about. I understand that it's early tech, but if these issues were presented by any other manufacturer, we would be talking about how flawed it is. Yes, it is more secure, but the previous option was already secure enough, and wasn't half as much hassle to use in all but ideal scenarios.
Its just a flaw that can't really be overcome unless they have a camera that shoot out at a super wide angle for when its on a table. Underscreen fingerprint sounds much better overall for quickness and not missing the right angle sometimes.

Whoa. I did not see this coming. Would they actually do this? This is technology that people have been asking for since iPhone X launched Lol.

Going to be interesting to see....
Bring back the fingerprint sensors and phone jacks, and include a nice DAC. Make it a little thicker, if need be. I'd trade in my 6S+ tomorrow instead of getting a new battery.

You know what’s funny? By bringing back certain features/ports they would gain back a LOT of people lmao.

I truly don’t think they’ll bring back the headphone jack though. Making the products a tad thicker? I could see that.

Could also see fingerprint under the display globally and not just China.

I would love to see both options in the same phone then give the user the ability in the control center to select either or both. If you are working outside in the winter wearing gloves you simply switch to Face ID. If it is summer time and you are wearing mirrored sunglasses, switch to Touch ID. Going someplace where you want extra security on your phone, turn them both on.
Exactly.

Strongly encourage apple to listen to the people on this one and offer both ID systems on their devices in all markets. Lack of a finger print ID is what will push me out of the ecosphere on my next phone.

Having just come back to iPhone after using galaxy s10, I can say I missed Face ID. The in screen FPS just plain sucked. It worked about 60% of the time for me. If apple could figure out a way to make the FPS better, maybe it’d be worth it, but Samsung’s version of it was just horrible for me.

I've actually had the opposite experience. FaceID was annoying for me personally, plus having to pick up your phone if you want to unlock it, or trying to get it to unlock at night just didn't work out. I moved to a Galaxy S10+ and find the FPS to be about on-par with TouchID as far as convenience.

2 factor authentication biometrics wouldn't be a bad thing would it? You could use either one as a quick login, using whichever is quicker, but when it really needs to confirm who you are, like when my iPhone insists that it requires my 4 digit pin, kick in with 2FA rather than the pin. Options within settings could allow you to always require 2FA for the security conscious or mostly have it turned off except when the OS deems it necessary
Yes, good idea, but isn't the plan to make it cheaper?

Has anybody used Samsung's S10 one? It's easily tricked. Lets hope Apple can do a satisfactory job of it!

I found this article on the verge... not sure if I'd call this easy...

" he took a picture of his fingerprint on a wineglass, processed it in Photoshop, and made a model using 3ds Max that allowed him to extrude the lines in the picture into a 3D version. After a 13-minute print (and three attempts with some tweaks), he was able to print out a version of his fingerprint that fooled the phone’s sensor."

Yeah I call BS on this one.

Why do you say that? I've been saying this for years - that they would go back to TouchID where necessary. It makes sense for them to hedge bets, and we do know they were always exploring in screen fingerprint sensors even a couple years prior to FaceID launching.

How racist of Apple. Btw, many Asians feel westerners all look alike too.

Same here. Love it!

And if glasses are an issue, then add additional faceid’s wearing them.
It's not about race, it's about money, exacerbated by trade tariffs. One could argue Trump is engaging in cultural wars with Asia to appease his "base", but money motivation is generally blind to racial differences. Glad you, as others, prefer face id; many others prefer the good old home button and fingerprint sensor. Under Cook, if you put aside his interests in promoting gay rights and privacy, money reigns supreme behind Apple directions. Add the Ive push for thinness into the pot, and you get removal of phone jacks and push toward Apple produced bluetooth devices; remove ports on laptops and you sell more dongles. Of the iPhones I've owned, my preferences were the iPhone 5/5s line for function and form factor, and my current 6s+ for fingerprint sensor/home button, 3D touch, and phone jack. Leave all that stuff intact, update CPU and storage, and improve the camera - market it as an iPhone-Retro and I'll bet Apple would get a very substantial surge in their customer base.

If this is true, Tim Cook made Apple a joke. Apple will never make a product for a sale in a very specific market. Apple was making for product better consumer experience.

I've just upgraded to an iPhone 8 so that I can keep TouchId. It is perfect for anyone wearing protective headgear such as a crash helmet.
I hope that if this report is true then we get the device or a device with this tech in outside of China ASAP.

I'm still rocking my 8+. I won't upgrade until they bring back touch ID and remove the notch.

Touch ID is more convenient
Face ID is more secure

Decisions decisions

China only market, under display TouchID. Other markets incorporate both, Apple can eat the minor cost associated with including both that they created with the price bump starting with the X.
