This whole iPhone 14 plus reminds me something during commodore era.
remember the plus/4? The machine which is not much better than Commodore 64, better in some ways but worse in other ways, and they could not sell the product at the same price as Commodore 64 at the time? Apple is essentially making the same mistake regarding this iPhone 14 plus lineup.
Stock you say? All Colors, all storage options, all available today. TODAY. We are three days away from 2023 and none of them are out of stock in the past 3 weeks or so. I think this is enough to tell apple “iPhone 14 plus” is a market failure. Wonder where those stocks gonna end up going After sep 2023.

Perhaps they just fulfilled the pent up demand with the previous model, so not a lot of people looking to upgrade to the 14

Any reason in particular why?
It’s the battery life, and my finger usually ends up blocking the bottom edge of the photos I take. There’s countless ruined photos because the camera somehow picked up my finger as a blurry blob, even when I was trying to be particularly careful.

These both are becoming an increasing annoyance and I’m kind of over this size and form factor.

Too many options (same goes with the iPad).

The first thing Jobs did when he came back in 1997 was simplify the lineup as there were so many different products and models; they need to do that again.
And what would you get rid of? The Pro Max? What a bad idea that would be. This isn't a simple as you think it is, it isn't the 90s.

As for the MacBook and iPad lines, however...

The form factor I only continue loving more each day (although, admittedly, perhaps the size of the screen isn’t optimal for my aging eyes). The battery life, however, I will agree with you on, at least with 16.3 and many other versions of iOS 16. We’ll see how things continue to shape up throughout the beta release cycle; for a first beta things are really running quite smoothly but battery life could certainly be better.

iPhone 14/plus is just a bad, outdated, overpriced product. They tried to sell one year old tech at the price of last model iPhone. They failed. They had it coming, their customers are not as stupid as they thing, hopefully they’ll learn and next year offer a better iPhone 15 range. As for the pro, it should just be abolished altogether and things should be like when Steve jobs was around: one model of phone and that’s it. No pro, no plus and definitely no ultra.

Especially the pricing is ridiculous here in Europe. The base model 14 plus costs 10€ more than my base 13 Pro cost when I bought it at launch.

Not surprise, the regular 14 and Plus are pointless items. If you are on an older phone there is no reason to upgrade. If you are in the market for a new phone, you'd be better off with the Pro range.

The Pro should be the standard offering. Then the Max, then they can go nuts with their rumoured Ultra.

After I got my iPhone 1, I would upgrade to the next version when it came out. Eventually, I would upgrade at the introduction of every other model. Now, I'm still on my iPhone 12 Pro. With every iPhone roll out, we get diminishing returns. The new features don't justify getting a new phone. At this point, I feel like I'm waiting for my 12's battery or external speakers to die.
This is actually the core of Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus dilemma -Upgrades from year to year where much larger in the early days of iPhone and so many consumer felt justifiable behind with a 1-2 year old smartphone.

But the market has matured significantly since then, and now, most users see next to no difference in day to day usage when upgrading to a new iPhone every 1-3 years. Maybe in battery life and cameras, but not in processing power, opening apps, display quality.

Downgrading the SE and mid tier iPhones and “forcing” iPhone buyers looking for new feature to get a Pro is one way to combat overall lower sales.

But it appears that, despite lowering production of mid tier and SEs, Apple saw sales numbers for those that were lower than their already low expectations and possibly overall lower than expected revenue after production costs are subtracted.

I’m expecting Apple to do 3 models for the 2023 lineup - standard, Pro, and Ultra.

Standard and Pro will be like every other year but in the 15 design. Ultra will have Pro Max size but feature even better specs than Pro and mirror the aesthetics and some of the outdoors/sports features that we saw from Watch Ultra.

Great idea! Further separating the standard from the Pro means omitting more features from the standard, as they certainly can’t add more features to the Pro. I doubt that that’s going to make it more attractive.
Their solution is probably going to be increasing the price of the Pros even further.

Is the demand slipping away because consumers can’t have a good smaller iPhone? The iPhone 14 plus was a interesting marketing attempt, but people liked the iPhone 12/13 choices better with the Mini.

I guess it is more to do with the price rather than size, as mini did not do so well either, apparently. However, with 12-13 lines, mini still cost less than a “regular” 6.1” iPhone 12-13, whereas now that 14 plus costs more, so most people probably just do not see much point in paying more for a bigger phone with exactly the same set of features as its smaller 6.1” counterpart.

They can try increasing the price but I highly doubt they can get away with it at least in Europe. In Europe a 128GB iPhone 14 Pro is now priced at 1329 euros. I don't know they can get away with 1399 or 1499 euros.

It's also possible that this is another iPhone XR all over again. The demand will be there, just that the target market isn't the sort who will run out and purchase one on release day (that's typically reserved for the pro models).

It's a shame. I have handled it for a while at the Apple Store, and do like the lighter weight (compared to my 13 pro max) and the varied colours (red has always been a personal favourite), but I always went with more features at the end of the day.

I guess the irony is that iPhone customers want the best, and more crucially, are willing to pay for the best, which in turn means that the cheaper iPhone models selling less because they are cheaper? o_O

They could probably get away with just 15 / 15 Pro / 15 Ultra. I wonder if the 14 Plus sales are worse than the 13 mini.
When I've tried to buy a 14 Pro I couldn't find anywhere that had them, months after launch ... and I've held off because the 14 doesn't seem to be much of an improvement over the 13 ... still no TouchID, still no USB-C .. there's little to attract me to the 14 when my 11 Pro Max does pretty much everything anyway.

If they bring back TouchID (the number of times I have to enter my PIN each day because FaceID just doesn't cut it) then I'd be more inclined to buy a new iPhone. tbh I'm actually now seriously considering a Pixel 7 or maybe an S23 ... Apple need to swallow their pride and appreciate that FaceID isn't for everyone. And they really need to look at the prices of storage on the iPhone too. 1TB version comes in at close to £1,800 ... I could buy a laptop for that money
